The instant football changed

326

Had your fill of international football for the year? Good. Let’s get on with business. Delighted Mark McGhee’s back in football, and at Motherwell. I had a soft spot for Mark back in the days, ‘Hammer of the Hearts’, as he was.

By watching Mark McGhee you saw a profound change take place in the game. Until the mid-80s it was possible to get by in the game aligning brute strength with decent levels of skill, as Mark had, or even sublime skill with compulsive inertia, which was enough for Charlie Nicholas to carve out a career for a while.

Almost in an instant the game changed. Mark was praised (and valued) with the most unflattering chant, Nicholas was finished after the debacle of Raith Rovers. Not that he’s bitter.

Best of luck to big Mixu too. I’m long on record saying we don’t need a ‘strong Rangers’ (sic.), but the flip side of this is that we do need teams like Aberdeen and United meeting the grade.

Murray Capital Group posted a £13.6m pre-tax profit. I’ve been writing about this wolf in wolf’s clothing for long enough to know the script with this matter.

I know many CQN’ers have helped Glasgow the Caring City over the years. You should take a look at the work they carried out with Syrian and Afghan refugees in Serbia this month. If you are on Facebook, give them a like here.  It helps the volunteers to know their efforts are appreciated.

Then maybe ask older Celtic fans what they know about Novi Sad, it’s a story worth telling, even 48 years on.

I think it referred to a thoroughly scurrilous suggestion that, despite Murray’s companies being in hock to HBOS (and thus Lloyds)for around a BILLION QUID with assets of around a third of that,he was allowed to manage the rundown, selling the plums for peanuts.

Green left in a hurry. A big hurry. A manufactured racist slur against his buddy – yeah right. And I can also tell you that he never even packed his bags such was his haste. He was staying in a rented flat in the West End and arranged for his landlord to forward his belongings.

Always wondered why the rush. We may soon know…

    James Wilson.

Utterly pointless. He could be the next Puskas. It won’t matter as he won’t stay for long.

How bad is our striking policy?

Should be amusing to see some positive spin from this prospective deal.

Jimthetim53, I can understand where you are coming regarding your feelings towards Dodgy Dave the first.

This will never happen but my preference is for him to lose his knighthood and do time inside. That to me would be a major double whammy for him.

It riles me greatly people like Murray go on about being patriotic but go out of their way to avoid contributing to the finances and well being of the country they say they are so patriotic about.

The wee jobby Lasley going on today about how good it is to have Mark ‘dingus’ McGhee back in charge. Last week the same wee jobby was going about how good it was to have Craigen as boss.

We owe Lasley some of his own treatment.

  10. Delighted Celtic have gotten their man again, in James Wilson, having been thwarted in the summer.

Winning the league is all that matters, and Wilson’s goals will add to the entertainment value, and hopefully help secure another consecutive title.

    You know what?

I’d actually prefer the Elvisphobic (allegedly) Stokesy to be rehabilitated.

    Yet again.

  12. Joe Filippis Haircut on

I believe we do need another striker or even two if Sparkey gets a bad injury who do we have at the moment to replace his goals ? We are still in four competitions so we will have a heavy schedule of games so even a 6 month loan would be welcome as long as the incoming player can hit the ground running by scoring goals in Ronny I trust. H.H.

  13. James Wilson. Being reported as a good young striker.

I think there is a lot of truth in the saying that a good striker can score goals,at any level. Ian Wright and Gary Hooper for example. And the Griff.

So, don’t we have a young striker, Aiden Nesbitt, in our youth / development squad scoring goals for fun. Why bring in James Wilson and push him further down the pecking order?

Maybe I’m overrating young Nesbitt and under rating young Wilson.

  14. I think most Celtic fans will understand that RD has had is present budget for players, and before, any transfer fees go out in January, Ronny’s own position will be subject to scrutiny.

Then after the EL and SPL campaigns are over his new budget will only be discussed at this point.

It was the same with Neil Lennon, and most managers of most football clubs.

  15. Many thanks for the best wishes bhoys.

    Off to the hospital.

    Back soon hopefully.

I don’t think Stokes is Elvisphobic. On the contrary, i think young Anthony is a big fan of the King. He simply can’t stand the poor imitators.

I fear for Cliff Richards’ safety if he ever plays the Player’s Lounge.

  17. Supersutton

Young Nesbitt got on against Raith, the gulf in making it, is closed only when you compare a Man Utd prospect, to an SPL player IMHO

Just like both leagues Nesbitt is not ready to step up to SPL just like Wilson in the EPL.

    James Wilson

If he turned out OK, was entertaining, hit the ground running, and scored a few crackers, could he add a grand or two onto second half of the season attendances? Or izzat too cynical?

  20. Here is an excellent insight into the SDM profit story by Barcabhoy on Twitterlonger.

The profit posted by Murray provides the opportunity to tell the story of how and why this came about. The pre tax profit was £13.6 million of which £11.8 million came from the sale of an investment in Alexander Dennis

In the financial year 2009 Murray International Holdings made a loss of £224 Million ( Yes Nearly a quarter of a £ Billion). In addition to that Lloyds wrote off £150 million of debt in return for Equity. The value of that Equity to Lloyds ultimately turned out to be £ Zero as MIH is now in liquidation.

During this financial year MIH sold Murray Capital Ventures ( which owned the investment in Alexander Dennis as well as other investments ) for a total of £3 Million. The purchaser was David Murray’s family investment business, the one noted above that made a profit of £11.6 million on the sale of the Alexander Dennis sale.

The profit was on an 11% holding in Alexander Dennis. Not in a business that was run by Murray, and was turned around. He was a small minority shareholder , who sat on the investment for 5 years and got a return of 400% .

When Lloyds sold this business to Murray did it offer the opportunity to the market to bid ?

What was the process of deciding that this business was only worth £3 Million ?

How was the £3 Million funded and paid by Murray ?

All of this at exactly the same time as MIH lost £224 Million and Lloyds wrote off £150 Million of MIH debt.

All of this on the way to much bigger losses and ultimate liquidation of MIH and further huge losses to Lloyds as further MIH debt was written off. The last accounts of MIH ( in liquidation ) still shows debt due of £364 million.

So as Lloyds in 2009 started the process of losing over £500 million , could well end up over £600 million , on loans to David Murray, they were busy selling him assets which would return him a 400% return in 5 years, for doing precisely nothing.

Maybe they were encouraged by these quotes by Murray in the 2009 accounts .

” I am confident we are back on track ”

“the worst is behind us ”

” I am confident the measures taken over the last 18 months leave the divisions well placed to weather further storms and capitalise on improvements in market conditions”

As with most of Murray’s statements it all turned out to be complete and utter hogwash. Lloyds ( significantly owned and funded by the UK taxpayer) were well on their way to losing over a half £Billion to David Murray.

Was the investment in Alexander Dennis the only one that Lloyds sold to Murray ?

    Of course not.

Were any of these sales publicly marketed and alternative bids sought ?

Not as far as has been disclosed.

All as Murray left his pensioners £22 Million out of pocket and himself nicely topped up with a £6 million EBT.

These are the facts . All UK taxpayers and all Lloyds shareholders have taken a hit because of David Murray. Thats the story the Herald and others should be writing about.

*fully concur here, it’s painfully obvious that our youth policy wisnae delivering, hence RD being brought in. The innovations will take time which is mibbees why we are loaning our young players out, just like manure and city.

  22. Aidan Nesbitt is certainly an excellent prospect but plays in the James Forrest, GMS role and in development terms is along way behind, he’s a “young” 18.

Having said that he had all the attributes to be a superb No 10, good control, pacy, can pass or cross a ball.

And as we know can take a goal.

Think we should let the lead develop, it seems to me RD and JC take a great deal of interest in these bhoys development.

    And Little Jack Horner.

Rough guess? He paid his bills on time till it got over his head. Lloyds got about £150m back for the largesse of HBOS.

They bankrupted lesser HBOS clients for less than that-many in the same property industry as Murray was then in.

    It stinks,mate.

  25. All is not well at Aberdeen. Although the club have confirmed that the MSM’s bestest ever manager since cardigans went out of fashion, is staying for now – you can’t get a bet on him being the next departure and no wonder given the nature of the rumours on social media.

If rumours are true he stands little chance of winning manager of the year but is a shoe in for Scottish football’s leading scorer. The best since Frankie Bhoy at his page 3 best…
