125 kit and an SPL comparison

1030

A Hibs fan suggested to me on Twitter that as his team are wearing their home kit for next week’s Scottish Cup Final Celtic should take the opportunity to wear their 125th anniversary top. Despite there being 100 years precedent of Celtic and Hibs both wearing their home kits, recent rules (or perhaps customs) dictate that clubs are not permitted colour clashes.

That being the case, let’s take the opportunity to reach back to our founders and wear the anniversary kit.

Before that we have the small matter of Dundee United to play on Sunday. Celtic won the league by 20 points last season, 10 of which were gained after a competitor failed to come up with enough money to meet their commitments. Defeat at Tannadice could reduce this season’s winning margin to 10 points, in a season where everyone, even Hearts could afford to meet their commitments.

Who would’ve thought this SPL would be so competitive? Not me. More please.

Thanks for the excellent support for Willie Wallace’ autobiography. Orders in today from East Brisbane to West Didsbury and many places in between.

I haven’t been to any of this season’s domestic games but the view from the lap top is –

It would be great if the SPL was truly competitive but the sad reality is that it isn’t. Some of this season’s performances have been absolutely dire . At times players have looked under motivated and complacent .. Crap pitches and mince officials haven’t helped.. Celtic humped St Johnstone last weekend —– St Johnstone were dire. . I watched that game with my in his 80s Inter supporting neighbor . At one point he asked me if St Johnstone were amateurs . I wasn’t sure he was kidding so gave him the truthful response —- No — Premier League players . A top 6 team — to which he replied —— You’re joking

I think we’re losing each other here :-)

Has the SPL been more competitive this season?

Yes, but it’s my belief that this has only come about because of some of our abject performances particularly away from home.

I mean we’ve one something like one out of our last 8 away games if you exclude our semi final win at Hampden. I’ve got a mate who regularly texts me after draws or defeats with just one word, “Unacceptable!!!”

It does my head in how negative he can be. However, the sad fact is that this season there have indeed been a number of performances that have been ‘unacceptable’.

I genuinely want games to be more exciting and I wish for title run ins where the Champions aren’t known before a ball is even kicked in earnest.

Sadly though, the competitive nature of the SPL this season hasn’t been because of the skill, adventure and imagination of the opposition, it’s been because in several games we’ve been absolutely rotten.

Are we any closer an understanding? :-)

The main problem with poor performances home and away, has been the managers tinkering with selection,it’s alright to make a few changes spread out the team, but to play a match with no recognised strikers(kilmarnock at home) was ridiculous, also technically lennon is wanting, the last time we were at perth we dominated the first half ,but when st johnstone made changes in second half lennon could not react and were garbage in the second half and but for some dodgy offside decisions would have lost.I admit i was totally against a novice manager getting the managers job and nothing over the last 3 years has changed my mind,I hope lennon moves on in summer and we bring in a more tactical aware manager.

  17. The SPL this season has been very competitive from positions 2 to 11. Positions 1 & 12 have been a foregone conclusion since before a ball was kicked.

The fact we are only 10 points ahead of Motherwell, and won the league with only 4 games to go, is down to the fact that overall we have been poor in the league this season (many reasons for this, Europe, complacency, not as good as we think we are, continual chopping and changing of the team etc). Its nothing to do with a competitive championship race, there isn’t even a race let alone a competitive one (as would also have been the case had the authorities got their wish and sevco were parachuted straight into SPL).

We are simply too big for the environment we play in.

  20. HT, we have had too many poor away results, no doubt about it.

What I was looking for in my last post was a reason why?

Didn’t find it though did I, rambled on a bit, I was looking ahead instead of at this season.

It wasn’t that I didn’t understand you’re point, just made mine poorly.

    Must try harder;-) here goes…..

Competition is lacking at present, but it wasn’t totally missing as all the pundits predicted.

Why? We have better players and resources, simple.

We know it, they know it, everyone knows it. Therefore it has a psychological effect on the players, we can play poorly, loose a few games where the intensity is lacking, so what, we’ll win the league. Acceptable, perhaps not, but true non the less.

For those reasons we haven’t run away with the league by 20+ points, therefore the league has been more competitive than predicted.

Poorer from our point of view(Celtic) but more competitive non the less.

Next point, going forward. Will the league be more competitive next season.

    No.

    The year after, doubt it.

But then, perhaps, and going forward more chance of it being so.

Why? Other teams will grow stronger, they don’t have to go spending money they haven’t got to keep up with the Jones, so to speak, no club will be going out spending more than they can afford any more.

Finance is being redistributed down, that will help, but it will take a few years.

Sevco will have little part to play in this, not just because I want it that way, but because they are financially hamstrung, and it will take many years, if ever, for them to get reasonably competitive at the higher end of Scottish football.

Ps, it hasn’t all been dross domestically, a fair few games that I thoroughly enjoyed, not all involving Celtic.

Need a drink after that. Back to work.

Hope that made more sense than the drivel earlier;-)

  21. Anti-Celtic bias still rife in Scotland

There still seems to be a very strong anti-Celtic feeling throughout football and Government in Scotland, if recent incidents are a pointer, then it is more than an isolated case.

While we celebrated the retention of the SPL title at Celtic Park on Saturday, it seemed to annoy certain people, and in particular some of the players of St Johnstone FC.

At least three players stood with their hands behind their backs as the Champions were afforded a guard of honour when entering the field of play; it will be no surprise to you either to know the three players were Tam Scobbie, Frazer Wright, and Murray Davidson. I sincerely hope the three stoogies get the chance to play for their beloved Sevco FC in the 2nd Division next season.

We also seen from the elbow incident involving Wright, and some of the tackles flying in from the St Johnstone players, Celtic were lucky not to receive any injuries for the upcoming Scottish Cup Final next week; I don’t think Hibs will need to wrap Leigh Griffiths in cotton wool against Kilmarnock tonight.

The bias was obviously very evident when the personal football awards were being handed out as well. The Clydesdale Bank Manager of the Year is Stuart Mc Call; Lenny’s team won more matches, drew fewer matches, lost fewer matches, scored more goals, and conceded fewer goals than Motherwell, so obviously Mc Call was a shoe-in for the award.

Let’s take the bias a little further; everyone remembers the so-called shame game which enabled Alex Salmond to bring in his completely unnecessary Offensive Behaviour at Football Scotland Bill, a bill which has filed the courts of Scotland with young football fans guilty of nothing other than supporting their team.

There has been much said and written about the need for reconstruction in Scottish Football, and for the introduction and expansion of the play-off system to decide promotion and relegation, everyone thought it was really exciting this season.

Well at the two matches at the weekend there eight red cards. At Dunfermline versus Forfar, Forfar had three players red carded and their manager sent to the stand, along with some non-entity coach of Dunfermline.

At the Alloa versus Brechin match, Alloa manager Paul Hartley has been accused of punching Brechin boss Ray Mc Kinnon, they were joined in the stand by another Brechin official. I imaging when Paul Hartley was punching Mc Kinnon he wasn’t using bad language, in fact none of them could have been using inappropriate language, as they’ve not been cited for it, I guess it was case of calling each other big buggers.

I might have missed it because of my weekend of celebrations, but I don’t think King Alex has summoned the great and the good to the Toy Parliament to discuss the weekend’s shenanigans during the play-offs. I can’t remember Roseanna Cunningham shouting that something needs to be done about this behaviour, but then again, maybe she hasn’t sobered up yet since her verbal attack on a couple of Tory MSP’s in the bar at Holyrood, Hypocrisy is a word that just doesn’t cover it.

I think Stewart Regan and Neil Doncaster have failed in their attempt to change Scottish Football, they have come up against barriers which they would not have expected to be there, but they have not come against as many barriers as we have in 125 years of unbroken history.

The main difference with us is, we are run by people who are really Celtic people, and who truly care about our club, we are not run by guys out looking to make a quick buck, who don’t care how they make it. Here’s to the next 125 years of unbroken history.

Always have been, always will be Celtic.

I find myself in agreement with you there. It’s my belief that no “rookie” manager should get the job at Parkhead. I’ve never been convinced of his tactical nous, nor his ability to adopt a “plan B” if and when required. I expected his motivational skills to be a lot better than they appear to be, especially after his “bring back the thunder” speech! In saying all that, however, I have to accept that our CL run had me contradicting all my earlier thoughts. If he decides to leave, I think he will fall on his bahookie, and his next job may well be his last!

Maybe take time but SPL teams WILL get closer to Celtic due to having an equal chance of getting European money, maybe from from us, but at least against other teams in the TOP Scottish Division
