2:35 am. That’s what time it will be in Astana, and in Astana FC’s players’ body clocks, at full time tomorrow night. Whereas Celtic will play the away tie during our afternoon, Astana will fight their natural instinct to be asleep, which will be a clear advantage for Celtic.

They conceded two goals at Celtic Park last year, in added at the end of each half. We should expect them to tire during similar periods this time, particularly so as full time approaches. If the tie remains tight late on, we should re-energise for a final push against what should be increasingly disorientated opponents.

Marin Tomasov joined Astana last month. He earned two assists in his last game, takes set-pieces and can shoot from distance.

Their other attacking dangers are Twumasi and Kabananga. Both are fast wing-players, who will attempt to press Celtic as high up the field as possible, and will break forward at every opportunity

Astana’s key concern is in goal. They have two keepers vying for the no. 1 spot, neither good enough to make it his own. Nenad Eric is likely to get the nod against Celtic. He is weak in the air and noted to spill shots. There should be scraps for Leigh to feed from.

Defensively, they rely more on numbers than aptitude. While Twumasi gets forward quickly, he isn’t known for getting back to do the hard work. Kieran Tierney and Scott Sinclair should be able to exploit this down Celtic’s left.

Make no mistake, this is a tie Celtic should win, but Astana will be more difficult opponents than anyone we will meet domestically this season. We have a big night ahead tomorrow – the most important game Celtic Park will host this season.

Interesting article, Paul. Would the double travel not be more of an issue than the time difference?

Good to hear Griffiths is fit. Forrest tries hard but it makes such a difference with a “real” striker – movement, runs, etc. Midfielders will be delighted!

Hope the Roberts news is true. Still keeping my hopes low!

    Celtic Football Club statement

By: Newsroom Staff on 15 Aug, 2017 20:13

The Club can confirm that the remaining season ticket holders suspended from the Green Brigade Section at Celtic Park have been readmitted to the section, with effect from the Champions League match against FC Astana on Wednesday 16 August.

Following the serious safety concerns regarding events at the matches against Hearts in May and Linfield on 19 July, the Club has adopted a Safety Code of Conduct for the Rail Seating Section, which is based on the Club’s risk assessment for the safe operation of that section of the stadium.

All season ticket holders entering the Rail Seating Section, including those in the Green Brigade Section, must abide by the Rail Seating Section Code of Conduct. In light of the agreement of all season ticket holders entering the rail seating section to abide by the Code, Glasgow City Council Safety Advisory Group has today confirmed that the remaining season ticket holders who had been suspended can return to Celtic Park.

The safe operation of the rail seating section at Celtic Park requires effective communication and engagement with the supporters in that area. In the last few weeks the Club has engaged with supporters in the Green Brigade section to re-establish the necessary communication and engagement to permit supporters to be readmitted to that section and for it to be operated safely, in consultation with the Safety Advisory Group.

Safety of all supporters at Celtic Park will always be of paramount importance to the Club. The situation will be monitored by the Club and the Safety Advisory Group on an ongoing basis.

  11. I hope the Safety Advisor Group of Glasgow City Council are aware of the crowd disturbances taking place in a Stadium in Ibrox, the regular throwing of objects which continues despite a UEFA fine , the apparent lack of effective stewarding which has seen people enter the field of play and the track area, and on at least one occasion confront a player, but you would hardly know as the media have blanked all of this. Please dont drop litter tomorrow it will be headlines for a week and reported as a fire risk.
