A healthier league

482

I have watched a bit of the Championship on BBC Scotland recently.  It’s seldom brilliant football but almost always entertaining.  For most of the season I despaired at the prospect of Arbroath picking up the automatic promotion spot.  The last thing we need is another tiny club with tiny resources lining their entire team along the 18-yard line.

This is unfair, of course.  What this tiny team have achieved to get within a whisker of the topflight is remarkable.  With Premiership TV money, they could emulate Ross County and previously Hamilton.  They would bring little interest to the league, but seven figure payments go a long way when you carry low overheads.

The alternative is Kilmarnock, a side with vastly greater resources and a truly terrible artificial surface.  Inverness and Partick will likely compete with the Premiership’s 11th club for the remaining topflight spot.  Raith seem to have lost their way since the Goodwillie fiasco.

Clubs only survive in the lower leagues so long before whatever local appeal they had fades to an insignificant level.  Dunfermline have a history, a decent sized local population, with an affluent business community, but the Leishman days are gone for good, never mind the Stein era.  Ironically, it could be Raith, newly relevant in Kirkcaldy, who are more likely to bounce.

Former Celtic central defender, John Hughes, is currently managing Dunfermline.  He led Falkirk to the topflight 19 years ago, then onto the top half of the table and a Scottish Cup Final.  When he left for an ill-advised spell at Hibs, Falkirk never recovered.  They have lost more than they’ve won in League One this season.

I’ll regret whoever goes down of Dundee or St Johnstone.  Both are sold clubs with enough fans to do better.  Despite the pitch, a Kilmarnock would be welcome.  It makes for a healthier league.

Has anyone seen iniquitousiv? Last seen on a satellite with Big Jimmy trying to watch a match in the Matto Grosso. 😂

  2. Not everyone’s cup of tea but excellent documentary on Pick TV just now 9pm-10pm about Frank Bruno & Mike Tyson … after a couple of minutes some great unseen footage

(apologies for non fitba post :-)

Pick TV is channel 36 on BT vision

The U18 table I talked about was put up on the KDS thread about the CFC B team in the Lowland League.

The comments suggested that the original poster could find no other place to put the information.

To repeat it is about the performance level of our U18 team.

Plus the B Team is the current pinnacle of our Youth / Academy structure.

The main issue is that the league performance of our U18 team is shocking.

Currently in last place in a table of 9 teams — 4 wins out of 22 games.

That is beyond bad — it is a disgrace to the team / its history / the support.

That we should put in so little effort that this is now our level.

As your efforts confirm — and is the way of the Scottish cringe — we spend far too much time and effort trying to find excuses for poor performance rather than try and find solutions.

TFOD2.1 have a B team in the Lowland League — so that excuse is not credible.

We have an U18 Academy set up with attached school — so why do we need to play under age players?

Winning 4 games out of 22 is us heading towards FW @ Highland League performance.

They have to contend with shinty — what would be our excuse?

I fear that we now need the Orange Juice solution — Rip it up and start again.

type of energy could be with us for a considerable time.

I hope not but its not up to me, its up to those folk who own these banks. 👇

Some say that these times were written??

    Written by whom??

What about the removed documents which were presumably, also written??

    Written by whom??

    Documents removed by whom??

What was on these removed documents, who did the documents offend??

Are we back to the days of “The one’s that you can’t criticise are the rulers.”

If documents were removed from all of the other stuff that is written, in various, religious books, who removed these written documents??

    Why were the documents removed??

What if someone breaks ranks and says, “Your all liars, the books are full of lies, written by liars, prove me wrong!!”

    What then??

I’m a Catholic, but when Pope Francis says “I’d Christen an alien.”

What, say nothing and fall into line??

No probs … as I posted later it’s a bit too simplistic

In the last two decades the “main” team have collected copious amount of trophies so if the u-18s have contributed over the years … we all win

We can agree to disagree but I have a feeling there is more chance of your good self “cringing” over the last couple of decades than many fellow Celtic fans have

But fair play if you think out u-18s bring shame you (your earlier post today) … I see things a bit differently

    Cheers

I should have also added cheers fir bringing up the subject, got me thinking about things

If you haven’t already watched the Ange interview with Mark Scharwzer (sic) give it a go ,.. of Ange identifies the same problems you think we have at that level am sure he will try and sort it out

    Cheers

You are very polite in engaging with a poster who simply wants to be rude to people who don’t agree with him.

Credit to you for that. Many would have less patience with someone so abusive.

Been on the blog now for over the 7yrs with the odd red card or ten… hopefully I am no longer going to type an argument :-)

Going to try and believe every poster is either a disgruntled Celtic fan, a happy Celtic fan or even just a delusional Celtic fan … surely any poster that posts on. Celtic fans website must support/follow/like our team

    We live in hope :-)

  9. Back-reading thru the comments kinda proves the statement that where there’s muck there’s bound to be brass. Not all of the scroll-by’s are maniacs or closets but, betrayed by their written disdain and turns of phrase, you know quite a few are really bitter, damaged, horrible, narcissistic individuals.

Re Womens fitba; I love watching – and get quite fervent over – Australia’s Matildas, who have some real class players in their ranks and fighting intent when they play. Yet at club level I can’t sustain interest in anything but our first team and the emerging prospects from the B squad. I don’t think I’m the ‘target demographic’.

However, I’d like to see a sorta ‘exhibition game’ – if it was possible – where our ladies side played our B team at the season start and season’s end.

Having seen neither on the full 90, I’m guessing it might be a close run match.

  10. Just watched Slippy Gerrard win a pen in Liverpool legends v Barca legends.jeezo ye can see where Kent, Morelos etc get it from.

  11. GFTB @ 10.04

    I don’t identify problems — U18 / Youth Academy poor performance.

    I just report them — 9th in a 9 team league / 4 wins from 22 games.

    Simply not good enough.

If that is where we are at / the best that we can do — then why bother?

Again if you are happy with that level of performance then what happens next?

The rot spreads higher and eventually the failures will be too big to excuse away.

We can win all the cups we want locally — and some might be happy to be one step ahead of the bucket of assets that plays out of Govan — but if we are given a footballing lesson in the third level of European competition by a team with a plastic pitch and a guy on Polar Bear watch then we are not a front rank football team.

We are then just a troupe of Bronskis / primeval street theatre artistes putting on a show for SKY.

Failure at U18 level vs failure in Europe — they are linked.

At the moment we have AP busting a gut to put things right — but it might not be enough.

To repeat / We need the Orange Juice option with the youths — Rip it up and start again.

  12. MM 11.35pm

Virtually hitting my kip … I posted this a few posts back

“If you haven’t already watched the Ange interview with Mark Scharwzer (sic) give it a go ,.. of Ange identifies the same problems you think we have at that level am sure he will try and sort it out”

Hopefully Ange is in the case but again I just want young players to progress into the first team whatever league position they currently are in is of no significance to me …. youth team to first team starters should be the priority

Cheers again and I will bid you good night

Hopefully this time next week we will be 6pts clear (goal difference obviously enhanced) and the u-18 players will be trying their hearts out to impress Ange and maybe get a wee sniff of the first team “if” we can get this title wrapped up before the end of the season

    Hail Hail

  13. Tom McLaughlin on

Just been reading that after playing 90 minutes for Croatia v Slovenia on Saturday, Josip Juranovic will be rested for Tuesday’s friendly v Bulgaria, allowing him a break of over a week before Ibrox on Sunday.

After playing 30 minutes v Germany, Nir Bitton is being allowed to return to Scotland early due to an agreement between Celtic and Israel that means he can leave the camp and return to Glasgow to prepare for the Glasgow derby.

I’m sure the permanently offended huns will be apoplectic at this obvious pro-Celtic bias across south-east Europe.

    Aw diddums.

    Good morning from the Village.

Early awake am I. Early to bed last night when the missus started watching Dancing on Ice. Not for me.

I was sitting up reading when my eyes started getting heavy and my brain wasn’t processing the words I read, so I was asleep by about 9pm. Wide awake by 4am.

6 sleeps before derby day. I should say 5 sleeps because I know I won’t get much sleep next Saturday dark.

I have booked a room in Kitty O’Shea’s (Edinburgh) from 11:30 Sunday for the big game. There will be between 10 and 15 bhoys n ghirls depending on who turns up. Last time we had the room we won 2-0 at Ibrox – Edouard & Hayes. The whole pub was a massive party that day, with a mass huddle on Frederick Street.

    Same again please.

You might give Hart Cleaning, Mossend Works, off Main St, Bellshill a call. Their number used to be 0169 884 4222. I know they do janitorial and industrial cleaning materials, but I’m not sure if they do the machinery.

    Good luck.

Let’s get all our bhoys home safe and injury free this week and give Ange a good chance at the bigot dome.

  16. Tom

Let`s hope Kitty O’Shea’s is a good luck charm . I know we don`t need luck to beat the Huns but maybe need a bit to compensate for the MiB in the middle……whosoever he may be.

Golf is back on the full course today so

    Cheerio for now.

  17. BTW…

    Some boy; that Will Smith.

If that’s not a deepfake video, his attack on Chris Rock was some sad kind of testosterone-fuelled codependency.

First he laughs, then see the missus looking miffed – so makes like a foulmouthed ned and slaps the talent, live.

As somebody said; wonder if he’da done the same if The Rock or Jason Moama had made the joke.

    Nah. Erse.
