A healthier league

482

I have watched a bit of the Championship on BBC Scotland recently.  It’s seldom brilliant football but almost always entertaining.  For most of the season I despaired at the prospect of Arbroath picking up the automatic promotion spot.  The last thing we need is another tiny club with tiny resources lining their entire team along the 18-yard line.

This is unfair, of course.  What this tiny team have achieved to get within a whisker of the topflight is remarkable.  With Premiership TV money, they could emulate Ross County and previously Hamilton.  They would bring little interest to the league, but seven figure payments go a long way when you carry low overheads.

The alternative is Kilmarnock, a side with vastly greater resources and a truly terrible artificial surface.  Inverness and Partick will likely compete with the Premiership’s 11th club for the remaining topflight spot.  Raith seem to have lost their way since the Goodwillie fiasco.

Clubs only survive in the lower leagues so long before whatever local appeal they had fades to an insignificant level.  Dunfermline have a history, a decent sized local population, with an affluent business community, but the Leishman days are gone for good, never mind the Stein era.  Ironically, it could be Raith, newly relevant in Kirkcaldy, who are more likely to bounce.

Former Celtic central defender, John Hughes, is currently managing Dunfermline.  He led Falkirk to the topflight 19 years ago, then onto the top half of the table and a Scottish Cup Final.  When he left for an ill-advised spell at Hibs, Falkirk never recovered.  They have lost more than they’ve won in League One this season.

I’ll regret whoever goes down of Dundee or St Johnstone.  Both are sold clubs with enough fans to do better.  Despite the pitch, a Kilmarnock would be welcome.  It makes for a healthier league.

Playing the post and not the poster, as requested…

    Your opinion…

“Thereafter there will be pressure to equalise the wages budget and sponsorship/merchandising income in all clubs who have a womens team.”

…can only come about if womens’ football generates the same income as the mens’ game. This will only happen if they attract equivalent crowds, which could then lead to increased sponsorship etc. If this does not happen, I can’t imagine that there would be an appetite from fans seeing (in Scotland) scarce resources diverted to subsidising a poorly supported subsidiary product.

If there was legislation designed to force equivalence, as you seem to hint at, I think it would be likely to result in most teams disbanding their womens’ teams.

  3. Kilmarnock, with 2 goals from Laugherty, one a direct free kick, condemn the Maryhill Magyars to a third straight defeat. Jags in danger of falling out of playoff position. McInnes team consolidate first place, so we will probably have 2 hideous carpets to play on next season.

  4. With 4 games to go, Fraserburgh and Buckie Thistle only 1 point apart at the top of the Highland League. The ‘Broch’ have a goal difference of 101 goals, while Buckie are at 97. Both averaging about 4 goals a game.

My Mum who is only remotely interested in football used to sing this song to me and my sister back in the 60s regarding the 7-1 final. The rangers are up a greasy pole, parlez vous, cannae get doon tae score a goal, parlez vous, the rangers are up a greasy pole ,cannae get down to score a goal inky pinky parlez vous. Born in Govan 1935 and still going strong. That song still me laugh like feck.

  6. Wrexham, 4-5 down to Dover Athletic after 90 minutes, score 2 goals in added on time to win 6-5, in a game with defences on top.

    —–

Cheers for this reply – I also appreciate your opening comments, not just for me but for everyone who posts.

My understanding of the womens’ fight for equality, is that there is no need for parity in crowds for women’s and men’s games to ultimately trigger an even split in the playing budget – the argument being, if you employ both male and female football squads, then club revenue & sponsorship must be distributed equally between the two – not to so do would be discriminatory.

There will undoubtedly be legislation in my opinion – women will demand it, as in other walks of life. I know the whole argument seems lop-sided at the moment with the womens’ game just developing, however there are many moves afoot in the USA, Europe & South America, at this moment in time. The US was first to agree to equal salaries for their national squads.

Whether clubs, after seeing what is happening, would be allowed to dismiss and/or dump their womens’ teams is a moot point, as it would be seen as discrimatory and would probably be on the wrong side of public opinion.

On the transgender point – there is so much going on within the IOC and other sporting bodies to find some sort of solution. Seb Coe and many other well-known athletes & ex-athletes, are voicing the opinion that if things carry on the way they are, womens’ sport will be destroyed by a huge influx of biological men ‘identifying’ as women in order to participate successfully in womens’ sport.

Closer to home – there is legislation being formed in Holyrood that will allow a young teenager to adopt a different gender without recourse to their parents. If it becomes law, then it is not too difficult to imagine ‘biological boys’ re-gendering to play for womens’ teams.

I take no sides with regard to these developments; but I can see ‘the way the wind is blowing’. It will have to resolved going forward. If others can’t appreciate what lies ahead, I’m afraid they’re not thinking things through..

Bosman was an enormous ‘fork in the road’ for World football and changed so much – the rise of the womens’ game will dwarf it.

  18. Leftclicktic – Thank you.

The wee man is a wonder to behold with his love and passion for footy, going to watch Celtic at home and when he can get tickets away as well.

I go and watch him every Sunday he is like a galloping gazelle when he gets the ball from the back.

  19. Equality is key.

We all have our own views on Transgender issues in sport. Self identity should not be discriminated against. However hard fought woman’s rights should not be eroded.

It’s absolutely ridiculous that certain political figures cannot answer a simple question. :- What is a woman.?

    Cowardice of the first degree.

Football must prepare for this eventuality. There is no doubt the Transgender complexity will affect our game.

    What to do ?????

    HH to all.

Your example of parity – the USA national teams – is not really a valid comparison to club football. National associations don’t employ players, they award an appearance fee and equalising that can be done at relatively low cost. Clubs are commercial businesses and will not not provide equal resources to their womens’ teams unless they can generate equal revenue.

Regarding clubs disbanding womens’ teams being against public opinion, clubs will make decisions based on financial viability. Government, no matter which shade, cannot order clubs to provide loss-making womens’ teams.

    Good evening patrons of CQN.

Had a great day today. Placed my usual Saturday £5 bet, a 6-results accumulator with a £377.17 potential payout.

Took my wife to lunch and a shared bottle of Rose in the Sheep Heid.

Got home about 4:30 to discover 5 of my teams were winning. 4 by a single goal. I was waiting for Shrewsbury to beat Lincoln. It was 0-0 with 10 minutes to go and I was being offered cash-in of £40+ which was tempting. With 6 minutes to play and still 5 winners, I was seriously considering the cash-in, now £35 and reducing as 90 minutes got nearer.

Then boom. Shrewsbury scored. Cash-in was now £220+ and increasing. I held my nerve for the next 10 or so minutes and my wife and I watched each game end with no more goals. I won the £377.17 prize. As the cash-in reached £250+ she was urging me to take it.

    Women eh?

    Hail Hail
