A kind of transubstantiation

840

Bobby Clark was the first Aberdeen goalkeeper I knew.  He was thought of highly, until Jim Leighton and colleagues stepped the performance levels up a pace at Aberdeen.  He has two places in the history books, one for the longest period not to concede a goal in Scottish league football, which when established in 1971 was also the European record.  He was also the first goalkeeper in European competition to face a penalty in a penalty kick competition.

Back in the dark days of the late 90s I had a Celtic mug with the message ‘Records can be broken but history can never be changed: Celtic, first British team to win the European Cup, 1967’.  Bobby Clark lost his European record within months and at Tynecastle next week Fraser Forster can break his Scottish record.  Bobby’s place as first to face a penalty competition is his in perpetuity.

Records are harder to break than they should be.  People get nervous when they approach, but it will be enormously satisfying if Celtic can sail through 31 minutes at Tynecastle without conceding.

Back in 2011 and early 2012 practically the entire CQN community was discussing Rangers impending insolvency event as an absolute certainty, but we’ve never been the most impartial community.  It was not until Daily Record journos stopped applying to Our Hero for a job and suggested ‘this excrement is about to get real’ that the penny dropped in many places.

This included portions of the Celtic support, who responded to the ‘news’ with a Congo line at Inverness, at the same time forever changing the substance of jelly and ice cream; a kind of transubstantiation, if you like.  This was no longer a sweet, it is nourishment for the ages.

Now the same newspaper has been authorised to run a story that there is doubt over this month’s payroll – would they dare suggest as much without authorisation?  When your friends are telling you they can hear the bell toll, you know where this is heading.

Although this season’s Ramsdens Cup is held in similar esteem to the ole Champions League among Scotland’s alleged journalists, I guess the financial reward for participation is not quite the same.

HamiltonTim, CQN often gives a certain narrow perspective on various subjects. The sufferings which Catholics faced in the North of Ireland have often been mentioned here. I don’t think that sphere of thought is missing from CQN do you?

    —————————

A narrow perspective? Are you sure?

Why do you think there is such a diversity of opinions? Why are there so many disagreements?

I didn’t mention the Catholic population. I mentioned Ray McCreesh only and that was in reply to your original post.

If you seek balanced posting then I have no problems with that. However, in that same spirit I think it’s fair to ask you do the same.

If you’re prepared to post something which would denigrate the memory of the man then surely, following your logic, you should also highlight why he is mentioned in the song which you referenced?

I can`t really help you with evidence but was at one game pre-Jock Stein and someone standing near me said that we had an all catholic team on the field that day. It was in the time of Paddy Crerand.

PS Just to make it clear, I am only offering this info to help a fellow Tim. On a personal level, I couldn`t tell you the religion of any of the current Celtic squad . It is of as much interest to me as whether or not some take sugar in their tea.

  6. Masty, that is your opinion. I actually haven’t commented on the specifics of the incident. Quite why you feel I am playing devil’s advocate is beyond me. The incident was repulsive. To understand it better is interesting for some people.

No police objection to Charlotte material being used as evidence court hears

Lawyer for CB says Craig Whyte has emailed court and has “no objection” to @Charlottefakes material being used in evidence.

claiments say some “Charlotte” material privlaged, counsel for CB say is in public domain so should be allowed to hear all of it

  10. Geordie, you can think of Celtic how you want to. I will do likewise.

HamiltonTim, do you not read material which perhaps challenges your own beliefs?

  11. @Brattbakkk: admissible in a London court as the liquidators try to sue all of the above to get money back for the creditors. Media can no longer hide

  12. I had a quick read of the DR about an hour ago (it`s OK chaps, I am in complete control of my emotions). I couldn`t help but smile at one of the comments by whoever is the Author of the Hotline ( readers` letters). He said something along the lines of: Well, Ally McCoist (Sleekit) gets enough stick on here but for a change, this reader is praising Ally.

For a change!!! Brilliant. Pure, dead brilliant.

  14. FFin’ Jeanette Findlay tweeting encouragement to get Roll of Honour up the charts:

“Jeanette Findlay a lecturer at Glasgow Uni who openly supports terrorist groups is at it again, there seems to be no action or condemnation from her employees or from any of our cowardly mhedia towards her. Why not make a stand and simply refuse to have any association with this woman. Refuse to attend any classes she lectures in. Highlight the reason for doing so to her peers, soon they will have to take action.

You can be sure of one thing, if the ball were on the other foot and a lecturer openly supported and promoted the Loyalist cause, the shameful ones would have ensured he or she was out the door long ago.

Make a stand please Bears and highlight the fact that this horrible woman is not fit to be guiding our future generation”

    ——

“I have emailed them asking for her dissmissal and of these where sent in working hours.

I have also reminded them that my local mp, newspapers and police will be made aware.”

    ——

“Is anyone involved in the Glasgow and Strathclyde university officers training corps?

I would email them and try and get them to make a statement regarding this lecturers support for terrorists.”

    ——

“Perhaps their parents behind the lucrative intake of foreign students should be made aware of the kind of criminal minds that will be instructing their children”

    ——

“My understanding is that Strathclyde Uni also has no Rangers supporters club. Why is it that the two main Universities in Glasgow have no Rangers supporters club but both these Unis have Celtic supporters clubs?”

    ——

“Universities are all about THE STUDENT EXPERIENCE these days.

If enough GU students got together and stated that her vocal support for proscribed terrorists and her innuendos – was having a negative impact on their student experience – then the University court would have to react.

IN fact – PARENTS of students (existing and potential) should be taking this very thing up.”

    ——

“I’m surprised that a Rangers-supporting student hasn’t encountered her on the premises and subsequently made a public complaint about her sectarian language to them.

All backed up by at least two other (Rangers-supporting) students who were passing by at the time and heard every bigoted word.

You’d think that might do it.

Who knows — maybe those very students may be on this Forum reading this thread ?”

    ——

“As a Glasgow Uni student you and your fellow GURSC shold be reporting what she does as intential incitement of hatred”

the evidence linking ray to kingsmill was only down to the armilite ray was caught with the year after, and was proven used in other attacks on the army and security forces at the time.the fact that the arms dumps were used by dozens of other republicans is/was beside the point to them ,ray mcreesh nor any of the south Armagh brigade have ever claimed responsibity to mt knowing.

  16. The veracity of the information was never the problem for anyone who was interested running the story.

The fact that the police have now said they have no objections has now shifted the legal balance in favour of those journalists but how that manifests itself remains to be seen.

Still, it’s the plug well and truly out of the genie’s bottle

Not sure if Jock Stein played a full team of Catholics but UCD are a team who play in the League of Ireland which gives players the chance to combine senior football with the opportunity to earn a college degree. If the players would stop letting off pyro during the match they might get somewhere.
