Abada, ability, discretion, memories

183

In leaving the club yesterday to continue his career in the MLS, Liel Adaba closed the door on so much for us.

There are memories to cherish.  That 10-man 89th minute winner against Dundee United, which made it positive for us to go top of the league next time out, for the first time under Ange Postecoglou.

His opener at Jablonec, an early indication we were into something with him. He is a big game player and that was most noticeable in Scotland’s big games.  There will be a Croatian household in the Glasgow area celebrating his departure.

His life in Scotland as an Israeli athlete since October was largely undocumented and I’ve no intention of changing that now. But he suffered an onerous burden. His discretion on this matter is impressive for one so young.

Celtic have had an Israeli player on the books for 11 years. You may be as old as Methuselah before we are fortunate enough to see another. There is plenty for us to ponder.

Thanks for some great times, Liel.

Pick up on Alexandra Bernabei next week.

  1. !!BADA BING!! on 8TH MARCH 2024 12:08 PM

Thought the same when listening. No way anyone from Celtic would have done similar. They’d have been too busy eating their prawn sandwiches and quaffing their vino.

Found it strange, though predictable, that White and Jordan didn’t have same focus when Celtic fans faced this numerous times at Ibrox!

  2. Alex EuroChamps, one year gave me his Ticket for the European Group Stages, 3 European Games in the best seat I ever had or ever will have in the Celtic Paradise.

I never forgot that or ever will.

I will pray for you Alex & sincerely hope that your Soul is Resting at God’s right hand in the Eternal Paradise.

  4. Oh Herr Fearon I will leave others to judge you for this anti semitic gem.

But is that the best you can do ?

I fear chicken soup will not be enough to cure you. Shall I send some chopped liver too ?

Still no comment from Celtic on the departure of Abada or Bernabei for that matter. Not a good look.

Liel Abada has joined MLS side, Charlotte FC. The 22-year-old spent just over two-and-a-half years with Celtic, having joined from Maccabi Petah Tikva in July 2021, and making a total of 112 appearances.

He made his debut in a UEFA Champions League qualifier against FC Midtjylland at Celtic Park that same month, and scored the first of 29 goals for the Hoops in a 1-1 draw.

In total, he scored 15 goals in that 2021/22 season as Celtic won the League Cup and the Premiership title.

The following season, the Hoops went one better, securing a domestic treble, with Liel Abada scoring 13 goals, including a hat-trick in a 9-0 win over Dundee United and a double in a 4-0 derby win over Rangers.

His 29th and final goal for the club came this season when he scored in a 3-1 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Everyone at Celtic thanks Liel for his great contribution to the club and we sincerely wish him the very best for the future.

  6. Liel Abada – best wishes for your future.

TEVYE on 8TH MARCH 2024 1:21 PM – well said, I’ve seen some ill informed and ignorant comments on this site for months; from a minority of posters that need to spend more time learning the facts.

That said the suffering in Gaza is abhorrent and I hope a solution can be found in the short term to end it – don’t conflate the people of any country with the power hungry and flawed politician that leads it.

  7. Corkcelt- I traveled over to Scotland for a cup final against Rangers with no ticket. Alex emailed me and offered me his. He drove to a pick up location and gave it to me. Wouldn’t take anything for it, just suggested a charitable donation if I felt compelled to do something. Met him playing golf with a few of the original CQN gang – what a gentleman. He will be sadly missed by many.

  8. Just heard the news about Alex. Very sad!

A fine man, below average golfer & great Celtic fan!

Love to Shauna and the rest of Alex’s family.

I haven’t the time to respond to some of the holes in your narrative and all of the holes in Ben Green’s juvenile over-heated take.

But just one quick comment. I support you completely in citing G.Fearon’s comment as genuinely anti-semitic and it deserves no house room on this site. He’s in the Irish Blue Shirt tradition

With regards to politics over here Merica, it doesn’t matter if Joe “Celtic” Biden did very well in the state of the union address, there are no younger candidates out there willing to take a stand. With regards to wee Liel leaving, best of luck to him. He came, He Saw, he conquered the Huns, and now has moved on. Thought his message to Celtic was very good. My only real bugaboo with Liel when he played was when he would cut inside and the fullback would overlap him,he would always give AJ or Tony R a hospital ball by playing it to close to the other team’s defender, but hey, he did score some vital goals. I hope his career goes from strength to strength. That’s a few ex-tims to watch over here in the ahem, worse league than the SPHell.

  16. Sorry to hear of the sad passing of the much-respected poster EuroChamps67. Only met him once, I think, in Babbity Bowzers.

Yes, the SotU was covered in UK.

With cable and streaming, most folk will also have access to the US news media.

Sky and BBC tend to be fairly neutral on Biden. If you’re unfortunate enough to wander into GB News, he is roundly derided.

  18. the long wait is over on

    Plus ca change

Reading about the anniversary of Fergus’s take over lead me to various sites / YouTube etc about our defeating st Johnstone on the last day of that season – one of our truly great days ( and which as a wee aside led to my moniker).

    Anyhoo…

The celticwiki page on the press coverage is here :-

    https://www.thecelticwiki.com/1998-05-09-celtic-2-0-st-johnstone-premier-division/

If you’re interested scroll down to the Mirror’s coverage of the Rangers game on the same day against Dundee United and a penalty awarded by a certain Mr Dallas:-

The ball strikes a Motherwell player and Rangers player Stuart “McCall immediately appealed for handball against the United man. Referee Hugh Dallas appeared to be unsighted but pointed to the spot. The ball did not appear to have struck Sinclair’s arm but it looked as though the referee had made up his mind on the strength of McCalls appeal.

United veteran Maurice Malpas was so disgusted by the decision that he kicked the ball off the penalty spot before Albertz could take his kick”

You’d think such blatant bias would be resolved by VAR but , as so many have pointed out here , VAR per se is not the problem – it’s the R in the VAR that’s the problem…

  19. GlenOwen – thanks for the feedback.

I had never heard of GB News but on a cursory review, it looks like a Fox News copy, targeting the tin hat brigade.

Gullible fools – I’m surrounded by them daily – politics are seldom discussed out loud here but when they are, it’s time to leave the room.

  20. Any onerous burden placed on Liel was by the actions of other Israelis. A key principle of the boycott movement is that it is institutions, companies and organisations that are boycotted, not individuals. I saw little if any vitriol directed at Liel by ourcsupport. I did see pressure applied by representatives of football from Israel.

You know the UN are talking about famine in Gaza? When will it ever be a moral quandary for us, with our history, to speak out very loudly against genocide, apartheid and FAMINE?

Having pondered, I am damned sure that the Celtic support, with a few exceptions, are on the right side of history here.

I think that comment has finished me on here. If you don’t like the pro Palestinian stuff Paul, if you think we should be quiet lest we offend the Israeli football community, then say it. If you meansonething else then be up front. Your articles are increasingly divisive and it is a complete break from your long and excellent track record if blogging. It’s a shame and it’s very out of touch with the majority of the support.

‘You did this’ should be more than about charity.

Each to their own in the game of politics

Much loved by many on here (including me)

But it’s a sad day IMHO. We have lost a decent footballer today

Based, as far as I can tell, on the those that voice support for Palestine, of which I am one, but not when watching Celtic

Those with a passion for political platforming at Celtic Park have a long list

I hope they are not planning a wee display on how the Japanese treated POWs in the second world war

Or perhaps a bash at the English for pre Easter uprising murders

You could even have a go at the Americans for slavery

I’m sure you can find some stuff on Canada or Denmark

There must be a load of stuff on Honduras

There is a consequence to sharing your political view within our football club

Today it just cost us a decent footballer

Oh the irony – the GB are improving the Balance sheet !!!

I wonder if Sunday will see support for the Nigerian School kids or the victims in Haiti, Ukraine perhaps !!!

My point is there are a thousand causes to be supported and I admire and support every man for doing it

But what’s it got to do with Celtic ?

Going to Celtic Park is about watching Celtic play football, it’s not Speakers Corner

Lots of talk (including from me) about how PL and Son have weakened our football team in January

Well, we can’t blame the Lawwell’s for weakening us a little bit more today

Good luck Liel and thank you for playing for Celtic

This Palestinian sympathiser (yep same as the boys in the GB) is not proud that we have driven a decent footballer and by the sounds of it a decent human being out of our Football Club

Politics and football it will never catch on

  25. I wish Abada well. He behaved professionally since the events of October 7 onwards when he was obviously under huge pressure. A decent player although a crap winger.

I’ve seen comments about the GB banner on October 7. One thing I will say – that was produced very quickly after the initial breakout from Gaza. It was unwise to have the banner without knowing much detail. However, in their defence two well-known Jewish critics of the Israeli Occupation did similar things. Norman Finkelstein was delighted when he heard the initial news and made comments he kinda regrets. Amira Hass, the great Israeli journalist did the same. She said she smiled when she heard. The details of the atrocities came later.

Under international law the Palestinian people have the right to resist the Israeli Occupation in any way possible. Killing innocent civilians isn’t allowed though. In the absence of any meaningful diplomacy to get the Israelis out of Palestine and in the face of decades of ethnic cleansing and a current genocidal campaign the Palestinians deserve all our support.

What are your politics and do they fit with what our ultras or perma moaning so called ‘faithful’ think is right.

Without doubt the zionists are guilty of horrendous crimes in my humble opinion. Of course Hamas were guilty of horrendous crimes in October in my opinion.

He was a caring, thoughtful friend, Alex’s natural kindness and humanity comforted and helped many unfortunate souls in our community.

And he was great fun! His golfing skills were not wholly without merit though his handicap was decidedly dodgy. We’ve lost one of our own. One of the best.
