Abada, ability, discretion, memories

183

In leaving the club yesterday to continue his career in the MLS, Liel Adaba closed the door on so much for us.

There are memories to cherish.  That 10-man 89th minute winner against Dundee United, which made it positive for us to go top of the league next time out, for the first time under Ange Postecoglou.

His opener at Jablonec, an early indication we were into something with him. He is a big game player and that was most noticeable in Scotland’s big games.  There will be a Croatian household in the Glasgow area celebrating his departure.

His life in Scotland as an Israeli athlete since October was largely undocumented and I’ve no intention of changing that now. But he suffered an onerous burden. His discretion on this matter is impressive for one so young.

Celtic have had an Israeli player on the books for 11 years. You may be as old as Methuselah before we are fortunate enough to see another. There is plenty for us to ponder.

Thanks for some great times, Liel.

Pick up on Alexandra Bernabei next week.

BSR – from a former Holy Cross bhoy myself that was a lovely tribute to your life long friend.🙏

    RIP Eurochamps 67 ☘️🙏💚

  2. I’ve just learned of the passing of Eurochamps67. One of the original CQN brigade and one of our finest. Alex had a quiet nobility about him. An understated style and a sharp intelligence. He was a caring, thoughtful friend, Alex’s natural kindness and humanity comforted and helped many unfortunate souls in our community.

And he was great fun! His golfing skills were not wholly without merit though his handicap was decidedly dodgy. We’ve lost one of our own. One of the best.

Robert -my point was one dimensional. It was that that banner that day those words that sentiment was so appalling that there was no way back for Liel. And so it came to pass. And there are a good few Jewish supporters who went the same way.

And whoever instigated that display that day knew full well.

As for your other comments-they are all legitimate whether I agree or not. But they are distinct from my point . My point was simple and not complex. Anti Semitic banner celebrating a terrorist attack while it was happening?? Are you surprised at the outcome vis a vis Liel ?

For every person here who reminds me about the complexities in the Middle East in response to my one dimensional point I say this…. you are all entitled to think what you want. You may be right. But none it mitigates or excuses the reason for Liel going. It had nothing to do with opinions in Israel. It had everything to do with that banner .

Nor by the way should you in response remind me about all you dislike about Israel and it’s goverment…it has nothing to do with me nor to do with me being Jewish.

Had the Green Brigade only expressed pro Palestinian sentiment and had they waited for the Israeli military response they may even have had the moral high ground. but their hatred of Israel is far greater than their support for a just cause.

I have not strayed into a debate about the bigger geo political picture…my point remains simple. Some Celtic fans saw to it that Liel could not play for us again. They did not know his politics , his views , his relationship with his god ..whatever. They did it because they thought it great to glorify a horrendous act of murder.

I am always willing to discuss the Middle east-I have enough knowledge /skin in the game to do so happily and civilly but i was careful not to do that in making my point. Your moral compass is clear ( and I do not for a moment wish to sound condescending) and I do not think we would be too far apart. Except my moral compass is not in a vacuum- and it is fair to say it is a bit out of shape right now. Hamas are not engaging in a turf war. Their struggle is ideological and I think best summed up by a translation of one of their slogans. First we deal with Saturday , then Sunday. In short Jews then Christians , together infidels. Israel personifies the current state of affairs as an existential war because Hamas has branded it such ; and of course when such absolute concepts are on the table the rule book is easily discarded by government and military alike.

In a world first I almost agreed with George Galloway recently when he said he had no truck with Hamas and that he preferred Fatah and Arafat. Me too ! They were broadly secular and all about self determination.

Their ambition was finite. A Palestinian State. Which incidentally I supported and still do. Hamas saw in the last 12 months huge strides in Arab/Israeli dialogue which were actually moving at pace and these talks encompassing business and economic benefit had the Palestinian question firmly on the agenda ; and everyone knew Netanyahu was on the way out which would have helped those talks. Hamas could not bear to see that hence the timing of their recent actions. And they knew full well the horrendous , inevitable outcome. And I am not excusing the re-action from Jerusalem just saying it was predictable. I believe Hamas hold the Palestinian people in total contempt. I hope from this a political secular movement arises which can actually promote a sustainable conversation. But sometimes I think there is little chance of that.

It is worth noting that the two million plus Israeli Arabs and the West Bank Palestinian population are not that vocal in support of Hamas . This because Hamas do not have an end game..as fanatics they do not need one.

(The blog I linked from the Spurs fan…I have no idea who he is and if he has a Scottish team it is likely Rangers. I probably would not like him much .I definitely would have different political views from him.

But as I said his blog is how others see us. And right now while his words are in part naïve they are also in part legitimate.)

I have made my point. I will move on from the debate about Liel.

STFTBs-thanks for your comment. It is not by accident that I support Celtic or align with all the good the wider ethos stands for.

    Shalom

    Bravo,Sir.

Are we really a ‘club open to all’ when a young Israeli man is no longer comfortable playing for us?

We should be very careful here.

First they came for the Communists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Communist

Then they came for the Socialists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Socialist

Then they came for the trade unionists

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a trade unionist

Then they came for the Jews

And I did not speak out

Because I was not a Jew

    Then they came for me

And there was no one left

    To speak out for me.

  7. Brendan says: “Firstly it is desperately sad the whole situation. Fantastic young player. Came in here as a 19-year-old young man into another country and lit up the field with so many fantastic goals and had a really successful period. He signed a new deal but now through no fault of his own or the clubs he’s had to leave to take his career elsewhere.

So who’s fault then? Look no further than the erudite post of TEVYE on 8TH MARCH 2024 7:32 PM.

So many snide actions and remarks on this subject by GB HAMAS and their apologists. GB HAMAS are not Celtic supporters. They use the club and its profile as a platform for their self-publicising. They are self-centered, self-obsessed, entitled and selfish.

There are upwards of 600 football grounds in the British Isles where people pay to watch the game – there are no other examples of the attritional behavior carried out by GB HAMAS. The club has appeased them for too long. I hope and believe that the rabble will be excluded and the safe-standing area closed at the start of next season. When a small politically-motivated faction is able to determine who plays for Celtic, the nuclear option must be used – Get Them Out (GTO)

John Beaton is NOT Celtic bogeyman declares Brendan Rodgers as he names what ref spat is really about.

“But Rodgers insists he doesn’t view Beaton as Celtic’s bogeyman. He said: “That shouldn’t be the case and I’m not saying that – I’m talking about one game here. I’m talking about the game at the weekend. I’m not talking about legacy issues or any other games.”

Do you think that Liel Abada would have left if Israel had not embarked on months of genocide and starvation.

If the GBs actions that day had been followed by lets say a week of bombing Gaza, maybe killing only about 1000 and then a ceasefire, do you think he would still have gone ?
