Adversarial statements, what to do with Anthony?

695

Yesterday’s Scottish Cup final was head and shoulders above the insipid FA Cup final at Wembley. Newco scored two excellent goals, including one from our ex-play, Kenny Miller. But it was our current, on-loan, player, Anthony Stokes who decided the encounter.

What should we do with Anthony? His attitude yesterday was magnificent. He decided he was leaving Hampden with a winners medal, and he had the skill, strength and capacity to ensure no one could stop him.

For the first goal he collected on the wing, made a beeline for goal before slotting the ball into the far corner, although he was assisted by the most generous defending since Jersey in June 1940. [Can you believe two defenders stood off him?] Scoring with a header from a corner when your team is a goal down with 10 minutes remaining takes character and determination.

Brendan Rodgers would have been impressed, but it remains to be seen if that attitude can be tapped into day-in, day-out at Lennoxtown.

I watched Motherwell fans invade the Fir Park pitch the Premiership Play-off final last year. On that occasion their actions went beyond mere celebrations, fans were deep into opposition territory, taunting Newco fans behind the goal. To their credit, Newco fans took it on the chin and left the stadium without retaliating.

I can’t imagine what possesses fans of a losing team to invade a field already populated by thousands of celebrating fans. Whatever it is, it’s primitive and unlikely to be a considered reaction. As a result, Newco will be dragged into a disciplinary situation which would otherwise only have effected Hibernian.

What’s worse, the one perennial get out of jail card football clubs often use when fans let them down: “We always criticise and warn fans about this sort of thing”, was fatally undermined by a hasty press release in the minutes after the final whistle.

While every Hibernian person interviewed acknowledged the role of their fans and need for improvement, Newco issued an adversarial statement.  Compliant friends in the media were urged to drop the role of their fans on the field.  Adversarial statements create adversaries, football administrators know this.  Getting strategy wrong isn’t worth a few hours PR.

  1. In analysing the latest (genuinely jaw-dropping) statement from Ibrox, you need to ask the question: what is it intended to achieve?

Is it intended to make Nicola Sturgeon think “Gosh, y’know, maybe I shouldn’t have congratulated Hibs and I should phone Dave King to see what he would like me to do”?

Is it intended to make Rod Petrie think: “Help, I totally forgot to go crawling to Dave. I’d better start self-flagellating now”?

Is it intended to make the rest of Scottish football think: “Ach, poor Rangers again. Such a peaceful club and fans. Always getting the rough end of the stick and never complaining. How can we help them out here.”?

    No, no, and thrice No.

This statement is designed to achieve 2 things IMHO. One: to deflect any attention from the violence their fans indulged in – which, as can be seen all over social media, was not insignificant.

Two: This statement appeals to their lunatic fans – not all their fans, just the lunatic fringe. It is a signal that, once more, “Rangers” s being discriminated against, and that it’s time to rally round the Board.

The question is: why the need, now? Are the expecting bad news? Were they banking on Europa money? Is Warburton – as his has hinted – miffed at the pennies he’s been offered for next season?

Whatever the truth, t’s like watching a horrible slow motion car crash. Hideous, yet fascinating.

ff probably at it’s worth at the moment, it will get worse. When they lose points away at ict, draw against ross county and don’t get anywhere in the cup they will turn rabid. I can understand how they will have eulogised the spfl as the new club moved through the divisions but it won’t provide them with anywhere near what they need – that only ever came from loans there’ll be hell on next year and you never know, aberdeen might have enough to beat them

I agree regardless of the result of the Semi-Final Ronny still wouldn’t have been our Manager next Season. Whether Brendan would have been had we won that game is another debate.

    Keep the Faith!

    Hail Hail!

If we had won the sf Ronny would still be our coach today, he may well have left in the week, but as of now, he would still be our coach, assuming we had beaten Hibs that is :-)

  8. That statement, coming from a professional club, written by an alleged professional journo – either they’ve completely lost the plot (this is possible given the standard of character involved) or the analysis of people on here like mike in Toronto is correct – it’s fear, it’s pandering, it’s cover up.

It’s also dangerous. They don’t need much excuse to violently attack their perceived ‘enemies’. We all know the history. I fear for the lives of opposing supporters when sevco make their debut in the top flight.

  11. Anyone else think that village idiot Kilmarnock supporter who specialises in YouTube rants and being thrown out of football grounds could be the brains behind the sevco statements?

The similarities are just too much of a coincidence.

  12. Phyllis Dietrichson on

SFTB – allow me to disagree for once (or maybe it’s twice now).

If we had won the Scottish Cup, Ronny would still be our manager.

That statement appears to have been written by Albert Gumby, resplendent in wellies, shorts,Fair Isle tank top and a knotted hanky on his heid.

To be fair to Newco they didn’t invade the pitch when they won the Pertofartcup after 4 long years. Dignity indeed.

    Yeah yeah yeah

  16. Incredulous statement from The RFC. We have seen their supporters resort to posting bombs and bullets due to their hatred. By naming individuals with such provacative language they are reckless in the extreme.

I would be amazed if this statement was sanctioned by a Rangers Board member —if it has then they have bigger problems than anybody can imagine. That statement is what you would expect from the lunatic fringe. Whoever issued needs to be sacked and an apology made to all.

    They really are the people.

  17. Nothing much to add to what has already been said in this weekend of sheer unadulterated glee other than the Sevco statement is really quite sinister.

Given their support if I were Stuart Cosgrove or Tom English I would be asking the NUJ to provide 24 hour protection.

The Sevco statement just gives the Neanderthals the green !!! Light.

Never mind charging the high jinx Hibs supporters the Police should be looking at that statement as incitement .

But after all it’s worth it, aren’t we told that Scottish fitba needs a strong Sevco?

For me, the most disturbing aspect of the Sevco statement is their use of the word “parish”.

Now I know that olde Englishe language will tell you that it can refer to a village, a community etc. But in 21st century Scotland it has a religious connotation, and whoever penned that statement was a religious bigot.

Yes it sounds like something the Orange
