Adversarial statements, what to do with Anthony?

695

Yesterday’s Scottish Cup final was head and shoulders above the insipid FA Cup final at Wembley. Newco scored two excellent goals, including one from our ex-play, Kenny Miller. But it was our current, on-loan, player, Anthony Stokes who decided the encounter.

What should we do with Anthony? His attitude yesterday was magnificent. He decided he was leaving Hampden with a winners medal, and he had the skill, strength and capacity to ensure no one could stop him.

For the first goal he collected on the wing, made a beeline for goal before slotting the ball into the far corner, although he was assisted by the most generous defending since Jersey in June 1940. [Can you believe two defenders stood off him?] Scoring with a header from a corner when your team is a goal down with 10 minutes remaining takes character and determination.

Brendan Rodgers would have been impressed, but it remains to be seen if that attitude can be tapped into day-in, day-out at Lennoxtown.

I watched Motherwell fans invade the Fir Park pitch the Premiership Play-off final last year. On that occasion their actions went beyond mere celebrations, fans were deep into opposition territory, taunting Newco fans behind the goal. To their credit, Newco fans took it on the chin and left the stadium without retaliating.

I can’t imagine what possesses fans of a losing team to invade a field already populated by thousands of celebrating fans. Whatever it is, it’s primitive and unlikely to be a considered reaction. As a result, Newco will be dragged into a disciplinary situation which would otherwise only have effected Hibernian.

What’s worse, the one perennial get out of jail card football clubs often use when fans let them down: “We always criticise and warn fans about this sort of thing”, was fatally undermined by a hasty press release in the minutes after the final whistle.

While every Hibernian person interviewed acknowledged the role of their fans and need for improvement, Newco issued an adversarial statement.  Compliant friends in the media were urged to drop the role of their fans on the field.  Adversarial statements create adversaries, football administrators know this.  Getting strategy wrong isn’t worth a few hours PR.

I heard Tom English on both programmes. His performance tonight was directed to Jabba as a ” clarification” of his earlier statement. He backed away from his criticism of the Zombies.

When you consider the veiled threat implicit in the Zombie press release it’s perhaps not a surprise that Tom English has back peddalled before the bullets in the post arrive.

Going to bed last night after Friday’s appointment and Saturday’s outcome I was elated.

This evening reading the Sevco (Level 5?) statement I’m euphoric.

A wise boss once told me after I had written an angry email to our support unit, that I should write it, then save it and return to it after at least an hour.

    Jabba should have done likewise.

Emergency facilities will be at full stretch tomorrow as countless victims of split sides seek treatment and Doctor surgeries are overrun with requests to have their wide grins surgically removed.

This must be a diversion from their war chest woes.

And of course the compliant MSM are in full lockstep.

Show me the pictures of Sevco players being assaulted and running off the pitch in fear.

  7. If Jabba wrote that statement one can only conclude that he had some fine wine after realizing his balloon had popped.

Thoughtless reactions like that suggest they are in panic mode.

  17. We are now seeing the fallout of the SFA approving the Shameless liar as fit and proper. They need to be stopped before their hatred actually kills someone, seriously. We had a chance over the last 4 years to clean up the game. Instead Mcoist, Walter smith, King, brown etc have been allowed a free role increating a poisonous dangerous animal!

Stebhoy – Don`t forget Challs Green. Mind he talked about getting back at those who “stabbed us in the back”. Totally aimed at the the worst low-lifes we have in society. As if they need any encouragement to go out and hurt innocent people. Still,it made him a few quid. And the SMSM helped in any way they could. Oh, how I despise those f**kers.

  20. If, and it is a very big IF, Hibs’ place in Europe was removed it would have to go to Hearts not the huns as the huns have not won anything to merit a European place. This is just a zombie smokescreen. The SFA could not possibly sanction such a thing without MAJOR recriminations from member clubs. The proper punishment is a fine for both Hibs and the huns and the huns being charged with bringing the game into disrepute with theirs and their chairman’s crass statements. There should also be a charge levelled at the huns for their fans singing sectarian songs and pyro displays – end of!

I suspect Level 5 will have briefed subservient “journalists” to seek to disrupt Brendan’s press conference this afternoon by asking “leading” or inane questions. This in order to further deflect and reinforce Jabba’s demagoguery.

Hope our effete PR people are prepared to slap down any questions from the press pack unrelated to the appointment of our new manager, eg “Brendan, have you asked Mark Warburton for any advice before taking this job?

On another point , cretinous cowardice by people like Tom English et al to change his viewpoint within the space of 12 hours. HH

  26. antipodean red on

    An Teach Solais,

Tom English was subjected to some severe hatred on twitter yesterday as far as I am aware, he was specifically named together with Stuart Cosgrove in that inane ‘statement’ last night. These guys are in the main, ordinary guys trying to make a living, the peepul have a long history of threats and intimidation. They will stop at nothing including putting folks addresses and phone numbers, etc online. Their club has made Tom English a target, quite deliberately, this should be a matter for the Police and other governing authorities.

I don’t think we should be too hard on the likes of TE until we know what he has endured in the past 24 hours.
