Adversarial statements, what to do with Anthony?

695

Yesterday’s Scottish Cup final was head and shoulders above the insipid FA Cup final at Wembley. Newco scored two excellent goals, including one from our ex-play, Kenny Miller. But it was our current, on-loan, player, Anthony Stokes who decided the encounter.

What should we do with Anthony? His attitude yesterday was magnificent. He decided he was leaving Hampden with a winners medal, and he had the skill, strength and capacity to ensure no one could stop him.

For the first goal he collected on the wing, made a beeline for goal before slotting the ball into the far corner, although he was assisted by the most generous defending since Jersey in June 1940. [Can you believe two defenders stood off him?] Scoring with a header from a corner when your team is a goal down with 10 minutes remaining takes character and determination.

Brendan Rodgers would have been impressed, but it remains to be seen if that attitude can be tapped into day-in, day-out at Lennoxtown.

I watched Motherwell fans invade the Fir Park pitch the Premiership Play-off final last year. On that occasion their actions went beyond mere celebrations, fans were deep into opposition territory, taunting Newco fans behind the goal. To their credit, Newco fans took it on the chin and left the stadium without retaliating.

I can’t imagine what possesses fans of a losing team to invade a field already populated by thousands of celebrating fans. Whatever it is, it’s primitive and unlikely to be a considered reaction. As a result, Newco will be dragged into a disciplinary situation which would otherwise only have effected Hibernian.

What’s worse, the one perennial get out of jail card football clubs often use when fans let them down: “We always criticise and warn fans about this sort of thing”, was fatally undermined by a hasty press release in the minutes after the final whistle.

While every Hibernian person interviewed acknowledged the role of their fans and need for improvement, Newco issued an adversarial statement.  Compliant friends in the media were urged to drop the role of their fans on the field.  Adversarial statements create adversaries, football administrators know this.  Getting strategy wrong isn’t worth a few hours PR.

Egg chasing in the 80’s and 90’s — the on field violence years.

From what I was told things had calmed down a bit from the 60’s and 70’s.

Better TV pictures and the fall out from the AB(79?) JPR stamping incident calmed things down.

However in the thud and blunder lower leagues it was still game on.

Every team seemed to have their middle class psychopath out to cripple someone.

No issues off the field — no battering pensioners in a pub — but seriously dangerous on it.

Soon learned that the fitness freaks in their 30’s were the worst — just playing for another scalp.

And then there was the Borders and Lothians with their obligatory “public guardian” mentalist.

Every team had one — the skill level could be different but the violent intent was always the same.

Not sure if Lothian and Borders ever had a series team themselves — it would have been carnage.

The leagues helped but you still had the mentalists in the 3rds and 4ths.

Then you had to watch out for your own cheap shot merchants at training.

We lost our new U18 second row when someone decided to remove his two front teeth because he didn’t like his architect father. Guy had come down to get involved and lost to rugby through the actions of an utter reprobate. At the time I thought it was an accident but sooner learned the reality.

Great game though — the good vastly outweighed the bad.

But yes you are right — different strokes for different folks.

Different now as the game is a career in itself.

  7. Apart from being sick of hearing about the cup final ‘riots’, it’s a shame the likes of sky sports news have not showed the goals since! Total deflection from the fact newco got pumped by hibs in what was a cracking game. Hibs fans must also regret the pitch invasion as it stopped the players properly celebrating.

The only thing missing from the Sevco statement last night was the words ‘No Surrender’ at the end.

I shouldn’t be surprised by the statement I suppose given that David Cunningham King, who pleaded guilty to 41 crimes in South Africa is considered to be a Fit and Proper person by the SFA. That looks to be coming back to haunt them and Scottish society

Judge Brian Southwood said the court had seen King testify for four days and “are unanimous in finding that he is a mendacious witness whose evidence should not be accepted on any issue unless it is support by documents and other objective evidence”.

Enjoy the family atmosphere at Celtic Park today and lets hope that the authorities are allowed to deal with those responsible for Saturday’s events in an appropriate and proportionate manner without further attempts to manipulate the process.

As I understand it the Labour and SNP cooncillors agreed to waive fees for any organisation wanting to hold a march (I’m not sure how many organisation march around Falkirk, so I’m not sure who would benefit from this largess, other than the OO) and Labour went further by awarding the OO a grant for reasons I cannot fathom. Maybe it was so they could buy some new suites, or learn some different tunes though I suspect it was just parish pump, pork barrel politics of the worst kind.

The likes of Stokes needs a period of 6 months with a minder. He needs his every move monitored and his behaviours on and off the pitch questioned. The biggest question for him is: why don’t you work harder?

Work harder in training. Work harder in games. Work harder off the pitch.

He is a talent who if he works harder 24/7 we would struggle to attract to Celtic park.

I remember in the stokes/ hooper era thinking that Stokes was more valuable long term than hooper and advocated building the team round him. In subsequent years his life choices have made me question if he is worth the effort. On Saturday he made me decide that he is well worth the effort. Rodgers could be a great fit for him.
