Adversarial statements, what to do with Anthony?

695

Yesterday’s Scottish Cup final was head and shoulders above the insipid FA Cup final at Wembley. Newco scored two excellent goals, including one from our ex-play, Kenny Miller. But it was our current, on-loan, player, Anthony Stokes who decided the encounter.

What should we do with Anthony? His attitude yesterday was magnificent. He decided he was leaving Hampden with a winners medal, and he had the skill, strength and capacity to ensure no one could stop him.

For the first goal he collected on the wing, made a beeline for goal before slotting the ball into the far corner, although he was assisted by the most generous defending since Jersey in June 1940. [Can you believe two defenders stood off him?] Scoring with a header from a corner when your team is a goal down with 10 minutes remaining takes character and determination.

Brendan Rodgers would have been impressed, but it remains to be seen if that attitude can be tapped into day-in, day-out at Lennoxtown.

I watched Motherwell fans invade the Fir Park pitch the Premiership Play-off final last year. On that occasion their actions went beyond mere celebrations, fans were deep into opposition territory, taunting Newco fans behind the goal. To their credit, Newco fans took it on the chin and left the stadium without retaliating.

I can’t imagine what possesses fans of a losing team to invade a field already populated by thousands of celebrating fans. Whatever it is, it’s primitive and unlikely to be a considered reaction. As a result, Newco will be dragged into a disciplinary situation which would otherwise only have effected Hibernian.

What’s worse, the one perennial get out of jail card football clubs often use when fans let them down: “We always criticise and warn fans about this sort of thing”, was fatally undermined by a hasty press release in the minutes after the final whistle.

While every Hibernian person interviewed acknowledged the role of their fans and need for improvement, Newco issued an adversarial statement.  Compliant friends in the media were urged to drop the role of their fans on the field.  Adversarial statements create adversaries, football administrators know this.  Getting strategy wrong isn’t worth a few hours PR.

I’m sure Brendan knows exactly what to expect, with everybody in Scottish football running scared of the huns and their bitches in the press today is a fine day to stamp our authority on the new era at Celtic Park and at our press conferences.

    Set the standard Celtic.

Without a doubt. I watched the narrative being amended as each piece of footage unfolded.

They claimed initially the Hibs fans were trying to come into their area and they were preventing them from doing so.

When that was blown out of the water they claimed they thought they were trying to come into their area.

After a few of their own said they didn’t that was the case either, it moved to the current story being touted by TRFC officials that ” they were protecting their players”

Pitiful. The truth is simple yet will remain untold. The taunting Hibs fans got them into permarage and they went on to the field to meet them head on.

Understandable actually! Likely the same thing would have happened if Jambos had done the same at the Celtic end. ( in my opinion)

So why the nonsense from their officials?

They were provoked. They reacted .

It has been a side splitting weekend and a joy to see so many old posters come out of lurking to contribute support for BroMhan and to laugh at deidco. All good keep the faith and get behind 6ix. You know it’s the green and white thing to do. Looking forward to a green and white CQN season and close season. Hail hail

A fair punishment would be Hibs thrown out of the Europa Cup and the runners up being allowed to take their place….

What we need is an independent enquiry headed up by the Orange Lodge….

This could all have been easily avoided if one of the Hibs goal had been disallowed (for whatever – e.g.pushing) and rangers had been given their customary penalty ….

There will be no winners in this fight only losers…

I still believe any fines should be distributed to all other clubs who have there reputations tarnished by their association with Scottish Football

Through no fault of their own.

My guess is that nothing will happen.

They really are an embarrassment , the thing that really got to me was the fact that the last thing we need is someone fanning the flames . Some poor innocent supporter , probably wearing Green and White will end up paying for it big time .

They could have sat back and took stock and released a measured statement today but with our good news weekend and the fact that the Lying King is now potless they rushed out these knee jerk statements to keep the hordes buying there S/Ts for the crumble dome to keep the lights on .

On a lighter note hows the nags ? think that Dettori horse Memsah (spelling ) that won last Saturday is a bit special .

  8. Media will try and drag Brendan Rodgers into the hampden aftermath. Celtic need to be streetwise and deal with it up front –this is a matter for the authorities to deal with and not Celtic.

Jackson shows with his spoon fed Jabba piece that he should not have a NUJ card and that there is no place back at Celtic Park for him.

Any journo who tries to sabotage Celtics press conference (like New Balance deal) needs to be banned immediately. If it is the Record all links should be cut.

Celtic need to take control of this press conference as there are plenty who love to create a problem for the club after the weekend shenanigans.

They are badly under pressure, their reaction to defeat shows how desperate they are.

The basis of it….is their fear of Brendan and Celtic.

Great opportunity for Celtic to put down a marker today on acceptable conduct of the meeja, anyone asking questions with references to other clubs opinions should be invited to leave the conference and seek their answers from the clubs they reference, with an open invitation to return when they want to discuss Celtic and our agenda, any other agenda will be ignored.

Rugby players fighting has got about as much to do with the OBFA as the myriad incidents of football players fighting.

There are many many fewer incidents of footballers swinging punches than there were in rugby from the 60s, 70s and 80s. The snobbish attitude existed that these were gentlemen sorting their differences while the footballers were hooligans and thugs. Willie John McBride’s “99 call” is regaled with amusement: Duncan Ferguson’s head butt was the work of a thug. That is how the narrative gets spun and we buy into it.

As I said earlier, tragically this is going to end any hopes of a repeal of OBFA, and that’s because those that proposed it will lose what little spines they had.

As I said and you have just proven, the SNP supporters will continue to blame those that tried to support our fans by repealing the OBFA and excuse those who continued to advocate and support it. The spines of James Kelly et al were still stiff enough to advocate this move in the face of Nicola reneging on her hustings promise to consider the Act again. With the “spineless ones” proving brave enough to move ahead with their measure to defeat the Act in the face of Nicola’s attack dogs painting them as being motivated solely by anti-SNP and pro-sectarianism motives. Those are the people we should be calling out but some of us are proving to be SNP supporters first and Celtic supporters second, in the way we frame this development.

Of course it will be a harder argument to force through in the wake of Saturday. And only two groups will be using Saturday as an argument to maintain the OBFA. The SNP because they will use this to vindicate their approach (regardless of the fact that the violence was punishable by other existing laws and despite the fact that no action will be taken about the mass singing which IS clearly covered by this Act). That is the hypocrite’s narrative that will be used and I, for one, ain’t buying it nor lending it any credence by taking their side.

And the second group in favour is Rangers fans, because they want Hibs (and the madder ones want Celtic too) punished for Saturday.

As seems so often the case the SNP has placed themselves in a win:win with it. If it was repealed – they can say they thought it was the right thing, but they have followed the will of the people. Now they can easily engineer we were right all along.

Whatever they are, they are very, very good at playing the game of politics.

Except they hadn’t. They opposed the repeal before Saturday and they are firmly resolved to shame anyone that tries to talk sense about the faults of the Act. Their attack dogs were out last week before they had Saturday to add to their evidence. Their game plan was obvious- to paint the opposition as pro-sectarianism and anti-SNP. That is as clever a retort as Celtic fans being dismissed as “obsessives”. It is no argument, merely a retort.

Mrs. Thatcher used to be painted as a clever despatch box operator. But she never ever had to say anything clever to gain this reputation. All it took was a compliant media and a sycophantic fan group of voters in order to gain an unjustified reputation as a “Clever” politician.

Well, I ain’t complying. And I won’t worship deviousness as cleverness. I will support the guys who tried to take the right line in opposing the Act and I will maintain my focus on those who oppose them. You just did the opposite in praising the SNP and maligning the guys in favour.

    Very quickly.

I accept there are some politicos that were calling for a repeal early on. However, many jumped on it in the run up to the election as they thought it was a vote winner. It’s them that I refer to. I believe the act was wrong then, and is wrong now and none of the reasons for that have changed since Saturday. So the same should be true of all those calling for a repeal. I’ll withdraw that insult and reserve judgement until we see where it goes from here.

It still stands as a win:win as far as I’m concerned. As I said the SNP would have been able to stand by it but if defeated on the repeal show that they respecting democratic process. Easily spun as a win. If the motion is now withdrawn, or they win they can claim it was the right thing to do from the get go. Either way they can gain political traction.

The law is wrong, I want it removed from the statutes. Saturday makes that more difficult.
