Adversarial statements, what to do with Anthony?

695

Yesterday’s Scottish Cup final was head and shoulders above the insipid FA Cup final at Wembley. Newco scored two excellent goals, including one from our ex-play, Kenny Miller. But it was our current, on-loan, player, Anthony Stokes who decided the encounter.

What should we do with Anthony? His attitude yesterday was magnificent. He decided he was leaving Hampden with a winners medal, and he had the skill, strength and capacity to ensure no one could stop him.

For the first goal he collected on the wing, made a beeline for goal before slotting the ball into the far corner, although he was assisted by the most generous defending since Jersey in June 1940. [Can you believe two defenders stood off him?] Scoring with a header from a corner when your team is a goal down with 10 minutes remaining takes character and determination.

Brendan Rodgers would have been impressed, but it remains to be seen if that attitude can be tapped into day-in, day-out at Lennoxtown.

I watched Motherwell fans invade the Fir Park pitch the Premiership Play-off final last year. On that occasion their actions went beyond mere celebrations, fans were deep into opposition territory, taunting Newco fans behind the goal. To their credit, Newco fans took it on the chin and left the stadium without retaliating.

I can’t imagine what possesses fans of a losing team to invade a field already populated by thousands of celebrating fans. Whatever it is, it’s primitive and unlikely to be a considered reaction. As a result, Newco will be dragged into a disciplinary situation which would otherwise only have effected Hibernian.

What’s worse, the one perennial get out of jail card football clubs often use when fans let them down: “We always criticise and warn fans about this sort of thing”, was fatally undermined by a hasty press release in the minutes after the final whistle.

While every Hibernian person interviewed acknowledged the role of their fans and need for improvement, Newco issued an adversarial statement.  Compliant friends in the media were urged to drop the role of their fans on the field.  Adversarial statements create adversaries, football administrators know this.  Getting strategy wrong isn’t worth a few hours PR.

I think Scottish football fans from all clubs will be outraged by the Sevco statements

Everybody has seen the footage. Everybody knows that those fans who entered the field were looking for a fight.

If Sevco had any sense they would condemn those who entered the field. No chance of that eh?

  4. Soukos

Whilst it was great to see Stokesy put them to the sword, I have to say the Sevco defence made it unbelievably easy for him.

Don’t think he’s got a long term future at CP.

Rugby players fighting has got about as much to do with the OBFA as the myriad incidents of football players fighting.

As I said earlier, tragically this is going to end any hopes of a repeal of OBFA, and that’s because those that proposed it will lose what little spines they had.

As seems so often the case the SNP has placed themselves in a win:win with it. If it was repealed – they can say they thought it was the right thing, but they have followed the will of the people. Now they can easily engineer we were right all along.

Whatever they are, they are very, very good at playing the game of politics.

  6. A great day ahead with the appointment of Brendan and hopefully an eye catching back room staff.

Today also marks 67 yes 67 days until I officially retire. It seems like the longest retirement of all time, considering I was supposed to go on April 30th.

  7. Pogmathonyahun

Congratulations on the retirement. I’m also counting the days to when I hope I’m calling time on work but unfortunately I’ve still got around 900 to go:-(

  8. Not posted for ages but had to write something about the rubbish I just read .

The Sevco statement saying that their fans were only doing what any teams fans would do if they were watching their players and staff being attacked is absolutely horrendous especially for a team with there past record .

And just to clarify , according to them when the a***hole attacked NL at Tynecastle we should have been storming the pitch to defend our staff , ( call yourself Celtic supporters eh) but no we let the law deal with it the way it should be , result , eh NO the guy was not guilty , never touched NL , come on Timmy it was playful banter .

I have never read such a shameful piece of hate filled crap in my life , do these PEEPIL not realise the neanderthals they are dealing with dont need wound up to DEFEND that scum outfit across the city . And they should also be held to account when some poor innocent person gets caught up in this crap they are instigating .

I wonder what’s going to happen to Scottish Championship coverage now “The Journey” is complete?

A few things struck me on reflection after Saturday.

    1. As we know, at the end of big matches, the police and stewards surround the ground to stop pitch invasions. This didn’t happen on Saturday, did someone in authority decide it was going to extra time so no need to do so at that time and it backfired on them?

    2. No matter about who was playing and who you support, players being assaulted on the pitch is an absolute no no, and that should be dealt with in the strongest possible manner. that needs sorted immediately.

    3. As for the fighting, the usual low life who attach themselves to football, depressing really.

  14. OHITS

The ‘ protection’ thing was fabricated some time after the dust had settled. I was follow following the comments and as I say, the “protectors” story materialised late in the day.

Yep. Anybody that refuses to alter an opinion in the light of new evidence simply can’t be trusted to present any kind of valid comment.

I was never an avid follower before, but the Hillsborough stuff just showed him up to be completely untrustworthy as a source for opinion.

  24. MadMitch,

I read an article, and comments, on his site regarding the repeal of the OBFA. From memory, he and others were defending it trying to say it was brought in to defend Catholics after the so called shame game. I was astounded of forehead to sqay the least.

His views on Hillsborough were indefensible.

Still enjoying the Andalusian sunshine so will sadly miss Brendan’s presser today. Could be the start of something big in Celtic history.. Hope he speaks well and keeps stenographers in their place.

On the upside I’m missing the worst of the myopic biased coverage of those poor wee sevconians who claim ” wisnae me. A big boy did it and ran away”. But almost brought up my local cuisine and beverages when I read their statement and unfortunately caught the Daily Rancid’s front page.

They are like the big school bully who’s crying for his mammy ‘cos a new guy stole his play piece ! And I’m sure there will be repercussions about Traynor’s ravings purporting to be a club statement. He even attacks and names individuals – idiotic and dangerous!

And he thinks anyone outside Govan gives a crap. Thought if nobody liked you, you don’t care?
