Adversarial statements, what to do with Anthony?

695

Yesterday’s Scottish Cup final was head and shoulders above the insipid FA Cup final at Wembley. Newco scored two excellent goals, including one from our ex-play, Kenny Miller. But it was our current, on-loan, player, Anthony Stokes who decided the encounter.

What should we do with Anthony? His attitude yesterday was magnificent. He decided he was leaving Hampden with a winners medal, and he had the skill, strength and capacity to ensure no one could stop him.

For the first goal he collected on the wing, made a beeline for goal before slotting the ball into the far corner, although he was assisted by the most generous defending since Jersey in June 1940. [Can you believe two defenders stood off him?] Scoring with a header from a corner when your team is a goal down with 10 minutes remaining takes character and determination.

Brendan Rodgers would have been impressed, but it remains to be seen if that attitude can be tapped into day-in, day-out at Lennoxtown.

I watched Motherwell fans invade the Fir Park pitch the Premiership Play-off final last year. On that occasion their actions went beyond mere celebrations, fans were deep into opposition territory, taunting Newco fans behind the goal. To their credit, Newco fans took it on the chin and left the stadium without retaliating.

I can’t imagine what possesses fans of a losing team to invade a field already populated by thousands of celebrating fans. Whatever it is, it’s primitive and unlikely to be a considered reaction. As a result, Newco will be dragged into a disciplinary situation which would otherwise only have effected Hibernian.

What’s worse, the one perennial get out of jail card football clubs often use when fans let them down: “We always criticise and warn fans about this sort of thing”, was fatally undermined by a hasty press release in the minutes after the final whistle.

While every Hibernian person interviewed acknowledged the role of their fans and need for improvement, Newco issued an adversarial statement.  Compliant friends in the media were urged to drop the role of their fans on the field.  Adversarial statements create adversaries, football administrators know this.  Getting strategy wrong isn’t worth a few hours PR.

The almost complete analogy was the `77 England Scotland game at Wembley.

Victorious Scottish supporters swarm onto the pitch. Rod Stewart in the process apparently losing his watch .

    Goal posts buckled .

No violence whatsoever as far as I can remember. Just over the top celebration .

What was the response to that ?

    Not much really.

A bit of tut tutting from Jimmy Hill was all.

No breast beating outrage from the F.A.

    Compare and contrast.

    Anyway , well done Hibs.

Very happy for your long suffering supporters.

be interesting to see if Scott is given the type of role Neil Lennon had towards the end of his career.

He certainly has the game intelligence and many other attributes

Winning Captains, the ‘ we will no longer be the media whipping boys’ .

They seem to think we run the media for some reason.

First time we play the huns next season we should give them a full rendition of Sunshine on Leith just to remind them of this weekend.

I’m sure the whole sevco support the world over will be made aware of the Celtic fans singing it and they will be in no doubt about why.

Sounds like a job for the Green Brigade safe standing branch.

  10. I have been watching sport scene.

I watched as Tom English declared its all the hibs fans fault.

History is already being rewritten. Scotland is already rallying behind the racists.

    You shouldn’t be surprised.

  11. eddieinkirkmichael on

That’s just how much the press in this country are scared(rightly) of the sevco hoards as Tom English puts all the blame on Hibs and never once mentions anything about sevco. We live in a dangerous time for our print media, we need the Polititians to stand up for the press and ensure they can do their jobs without fear of reprisals from the mob

  12. Have English and Nevin been brainwashed? Really on message.

    Really, really cringeworthy.

  13. Tom English…. you’re dead to me.

    Much like the zombies.

Hibs fans… chase the fud.. get him to explain his disgraceful comment.

TBH- he sounded scared. Wonder why?

  14. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Going by the nick of Nevin’s real hair, he has forgotten to get his roots done as well as forgetting his football roots.

Almost as big a weasel as that Wishart chancer at the SPFA.

No doubt he will be mouthing off about what happened to the sevco players and terrible but when Neil and Aiden were getting grief he said hee haw about it.

You only ever hear fromWishart when it involved the first Ibrox club and I have no doubt he will be mouthing off about yesterday’s post match action.

Tom English cowardly falls in line with the rangers narrative of events by broadcasting what I can only describe as a thinly veiled apology to traynor on Sportscene tonight.

  16. Dallas- I’m sure English was reading from an auto-cue.

How can they feckers sleep at night?

See when they’re old and grey they’ll wonder why they sold out to fear… and curse their weak souls. Doomed they are.

  17. Good evening all, just in, after a cracking, wonderful, hectic weekend to say……………

Ha ha, ha ha, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha.

  18. cathedral view on

The cowards masquerading as sports journalist in Scotland have disgraced their profession once again this weekend.

Nothing but PR men and mouthpieces for the hun propaganda machine.

  19. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

English mentioned sectarian singing at lunch time. Wonder if anything happened in between?

  20. Pog, agreed.

Hibs and Dundee Utd, hope they get back up, and not by reconstruction!

don’t suppose that will be on the agenda this year.

Given the perilous position of Sevco, I wonder if we might see more clubs promoted to allow another new club enter the lower tiers of the league.

    Here’s hoping.

  21. English commented that he was repeating what he said on sportsound earlier. It wasn’t.

He criticised the hibs pitch invaders, but said the sevco fans went on to the pitch looking for a fight. Also condemned the sectarian singing.

He’s definitely been got at. I thought he looked scared

  22. Been lurking & laughing all day long it’s great to be a Tim , anyway goodnight & God bless you all hail hail

  23. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Art of War, the media here can no longer complain about corruption in football in other countries when they actively encourage it with their hear, see and speak evil complicity.

Good night all and sleep well.

  24. Sevco media going into full “kick hibs out” mode. Can’t and won’t happen, but why the desperation? Things must be really bad. Trying to sell a few more season books by giving their confused followers a glimmer of hope for European football.

We’ve still got “B day” tomorrow and res12 ads to come.

  25. I didn’t see Sportscene tonight so can’t comment on Tom English on that programme. I did hear him earlier today on Radio Scotland. There he gave a very comprehensive summary of yesterday’s events including:-

The Hibs fans should not have gone on to the pitch.

If players or officials were assaulted the perpetrators should be identified and charged.

Rangers fans should not have gone on the pitch, and any found to have been involved in violence should be identified and charged.

He called out the sectarian singing by Rangers fans that went on throughout the game.

He called out the SFA failure to control the crowd.

He called out the lack of Police presence.

I thought he was very fair and balanced.
