Adversarial statements, what to do with Anthony?

695

Yesterday’s Scottish Cup final was head and shoulders above the insipid FA Cup final at Wembley. Newco scored two excellent goals, including one from our ex-play, Kenny Miller. But it was our current, on-loan, player, Anthony Stokes who decided the encounter.

What should we do with Anthony? His attitude yesterday was magnificent. He decided he was leaving Hampden with a winners medal, and he had the skill, strength and capacity to ensure no one could stop him.

For the first goal he collected on the wing, made a beeline for goal before slotting the ball into the far corner, although he was assisted by the most generous defending since Jersey in June 1940. [Can you believe two defenders stood off him?] Scoring with a header from a corner when your team is a goal down with 10 minutes remaining takes character and determination.

Brendan Rodgers would have been impressed, but it remains to be seen if that attitude can be tapped into day-in, day-out at Lennoxtown.

I watched Motherwell fans invade the Fir Park pitch the Premiership Play-off final last year. On that occasion their actions went beyond mere celebrations, fans were deep into opposition territory, taunting Newco fans behind the goal. To their credit, Newco fans took it on the chin and left the stadium without retaliating.

I can’t imagine what possesses fans of a losing team to invade a field already populated by thousands of celebrating fans. Whatever it is, it’s primitive and unlikely to be a considered reaction. As a result, Newco will be dragged into a disciplinary situation which would otherwise only have effected Hibernian.

What’s worse, the one perennial get out of jail card football clubs often use when fans let them down: “We always criticise and warn fans about this sort of thing”, was fatally undermined by a hasty press release in the minutes after the final whistle.

While every Hibernian person interviewed acknowledged the role of their fans and need for improvement, Newco issued an adversarial statement.  Compliant friends in the media were urged to drop the role of their fans on the field.  Adversarial statements create adversaries, football administrators know this.  Getting strategy wrong isn’t worth a few hours PR.

22 hours have passed since the statement was released to the media claiming that a number of The Rangers players were assaulted on the pitch by Hibs supporters.

22 cameras covered the match from every angle.

Not a single clip from that coverage has been released publicly to evidence the statement.

One could infer that there’s something in the recordings that some folk would rather the rest of us didn’t know about.

Let’s see the material in full and put an end to the speculation and media coordination.

The Game needs a clean look at itself. Let’s see it.

Chico Young kept saying he saw players being assaulted on the radio earlier, he then said he had his back to the pitch and hadn’t realised what was happening, if the wee toad saw the players being attacked why can’t he tell us what players were attacked ?

As for Anthony Stokes, well played yesterday, well deserved winners medal.

I hope that is enough to get him a good move. His time at Celtic expired some considerable time ago.

DENIABHOY………fair point,if Stokes can knuckle down

  5. The Battered Bunnet,

Did see one bit of footage OK whereby a fan does seem to try & land one on a couple of Hun players before other Hibs Fans run in and push him away. Not sure if a blow was actually landed.

  6. Someone did post a video clip on previous thread that shows one Hibs fan hitting a couple of Sevco players. They were gathered around the centre circle area. I assume their players originally stayed on the park as they would have assumed they were going up for their losers´ medals. You can clearly see the players in the video getting hassled. Maybe nothing serious resulted from this but if that had been our players getting pushed, shoved and punched we’d be complaining too.

  7. TBB – spot on. If players were assaulted let’s see it. Hibs should be duly punished. Due process should take place. Natural justice and all that.

Likewise each and every bit of film and photographic evidence should be analysed, guys in suits swinging the boot at fans, the lot – due process should follow. Clubs, individuals, associations punished accordingly.

The OBAF act was surely made for occasions such as yesterday? Sectarianism on full display, people battering each other – all pretty offensive and at the football!!!

Any more sweeping of evidence under carpets will just lead to more of the same.

  8. Just off the phone to Carlsberg who seem to have forgotten about the game in Kilmarnock .

  14. The haste of sevcos statement yesterday tells it’s own story. They are crapping it.

Every unforseen cost is a potential disaster. A fine. A court case. Having to replace backroom staff who get caught on camera assaulting fans. Allegedly.

But they keep forgetting that a compliant media doesn’t stop real stuff happening. Liquidation. Being skint. Surviving on loans. Being gash. None of it is any less real just because L5 say everything is Ok.

The only reasonable response from us is laughter and pursuing justice, truth and sporting integrity. And then more laughter.

  18. There are so many things I hate bout “them” , really far too may to mention on here, but one singular thing “bugs the crap out of me ” it’s the 5 Stars on their shirts. Christ almighty, 5 bloody stars, the sheer arrogance makes me want to commit murder. But then I had a thought which lifted my mood from suicide to only severe depression. A star for each year of their pathetic existence. Then cheer up , they won’t have any European money coming in either, of life is beginning to look much brighter.

Then I saw it , a brilliant light, brighter than I had seen before, they will have budgeted for that money surely, so maybe they will go tits up again, and a great day for that would be the 12 th Day of July, ya beauty!!!

The aul statement from yesterday was identical to the one Sevco released after the Dachshund went tonto at Fir Park last season.

Maybe one of their directors (real or kid-on) carries a copy of it for use at very short notice.

  22. And if Pat Nevin was really offended by IRA chants, and chose to stay away, fine. He was offended. His right to stay away.

Does his principles staying away stance get chucked out the window if it’s paid work he needs to attend for?

He’s a weasel of the highest, ( or lowest) order.

  23. One new thing I’ve learned this weekend – the shorter the distance from which someone swears at you, tells you your team is crap, celebrates beating your team, the distance someone ran to do that etc. in a football stadium the more likely you are to turn in to a violent thug who runs on to the pitch, kicks someone in the head, punches a horse or tries to abduct a kid.

    Strange, but apparently true.

I just hope that if it ever happened to me I would be able to resist the urge to leave my seat, run down to the advertising hoardings, dodge the stewards and polis, run across the track and try to kick someone’s head in or fight a horse.

    Hi Paul,

Long time since I posted – hope all is well and you don’t mind this non-football post.

Unfortunately due to family circumstances we are no longer able to go on our week-long trip to see Bruce perform in Manchester, Dublin and Glasgow therefore I have 6 tickets to sell for each concert:

The 6 tickets I have for Manchester on Wednesday 25th May are all Pitch Standing tickets and face value is £83 each. (These are hard-copy physical tickets.)

The 6 tickets I have for Dublin are for Friday 27th May, and are seated together in the Lower Cusack, Section 309, Row CC so they are a great view. Face value is 137 Euro, or £105, per ticket. (These are e-tickets.)

The 6 tickets I have for Glasgow on Wednesday 1st June are all Pitch “East Standing” tickets and face value is £83 each. (These are hard-copy physical tickets.)

    I am happy to:

    1. Meet you with the tickets

    2. Post them recorded delivery to you

    3. E-mail you the Dublin e-tickets

If we don’t meet in person then I am happy to trust you to transfer me the payment either AFTER you have signed for the recorded delivery envelope or, with the Dublin e-tickets, AFTER have attended the concert. (Unusual I know, but I believe that in this CQN community I would be safe to trust people to pay me once they have used the tickets and it’s better than not being able to sell them at all.)

Please do let me know if you are interested in any of these tickets as you’d be doing me a huge favour.

    Thanks,
