Advertising Standards Authority step into Scottish football

669

I hear the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) have written to complainants confirming they are investigating adverts run by Rangers International Football Club plc, in which they claim to be Scotland’s most successful football club.  You and I know that’s not the case, Celtic are Scotland’s most successful football club, followed at a distance by Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hearts, Hibs, Queens Park, Motherwell, Kilmarnock……. and ultimately East Fife.

The confusion has perhaps arisen following the demise of The Rangers Football Club plc, who laid claim to 54 Scottish titles before their failure to pay creditors ultimately led to liquidation.  Rangers International Football Club plc have traded for less than a year and would be pushed to justify their claim in the face of Celtic’s magnificent domestic and European history.  They cannot, of course, claim to be a now liquidated company.

The Advertising Standards Authority will write to both the advertiser and advert broadcaster asking them to submit evidence in support of their claim.  The ASA will then send a recommendation to the ASA Council for adjudication.

In the event the advertiser accepts the complaint and agrees to change future advertising claims the ASA will write to complainers to confirm the matter has been resolved.

Celtic’s claim is simple, we are the champions of Scotland, winners of more leagues and cups than anyone else still kicking a ball in Britain, Northern Europe’s first European Champions and we observe all football, tax and civil laws.

    saltires en sevilla,

Slow old man here…..tried to understand but I’m going to have to ask!

    “capitalising your own blog name”?

You mean set up a grammar / punctuation blog?

Don’t know what the creditors cheated out of their money are on about.

“a lot of the debts have gone away. ”

    Simple.

  3. What a gimmick by Neil Lennon.

He should have made his players applaud St Mirrenoff the park when they put us out.

Applauding them now hints at the self-congratulatory and self-flattery.

  4. “Because of the precipitous fall a lot of the debts have gone away.”

Easy when ye say it fast ya walloper, who are these feckin’ people?

At the bottom of the piece it says

“Disclosures: Miton Group have holdings in the above stock”

    Well I never !

Seems they need to promote investing in Sevco with this puff up

Jeezo, how much will they lose if they get promoted?

I have never seen a victorious team applauded off the pitch by losers at the end of a semi final in football at any level

If Celtic do it for this team they should do it for every team we play after they win a trophy.

Unless St Mirren or the SPL have requested Celtic do it then fair enough.

I remember teams applauding us on to the pitch at Paradise on the first day of the season.

    Is it a league stipulation?

Does anyone believe there will be a £10m transfer fund at sevco…. even the zombies cant be daft enough to fall for that.

And even IF it was true… would anyone ( apart from other teams fans etc) trust mccoist to spend it

I think we should respect their achievement … applaud them on…. let them applaud us off

  11. …..I’ve just successfully bought the entire rights to the memory of the debts…….every one of them……..

……………..and it is my pledge to keep the memory alive for the sake of every poor wee sod stiffed and ignored in scoddland.

    Ntasola,

Unless Lenny is a soothsayer he had no way of knowing if st mirren would win the cup.

By the way, beware the ides of march.

  13. !!Bada Bing!! on

If ASA finds them guilty ,you will only read about it on these pages.MSM won’t mention it.

  14. My point is that what Neil Lennon is doing is contrived.

It comes cross as a very conscious attempt to say “Look what a great sporting club we are.”

    Why applaud them at all?

If we are to set such a precedent it would mean more immediately after they defeated us.

We’ve all witnessed the rather embarrassing spectacle of teams applauding themselves are some worthy defeat.

Doctor Whatfor “how so” could be posed after statement. It’s meaningless filler.

I’d rather see Celtic spitting bolts after they were put out.

  15. Ntassoolla

So what the Ref blows for full time, Neil sprints on to the park and tells his defeated players, right quick Bhoys a guard of honour for the winning team, is that how it works then??

    I hope thats’s not a double question..

Chucked reading it after four paragraphs.

    They really have no shame.

As for traynor the soul seller, may he rot in hell.

I feel a wee bit better now I’ve clear the phlem.

  17. The only way I can see a court action being successful is if a Celtic supporting/shareholding lawyer were to take out a civil action on behalf of a group of shareholders on the basis that the proven cheating of oldco Rangers had devalued their own sharholdings in Celtic PLC.

Who would defend the action though?

Unless there could be something in the 5-way agreement that Newco have taken on liability for sporting matters?

  18. !!Bada Bing!! on

If Dunfermline get relegated ,Yorkston et al will play their heroes.

  19. In many Sports over here, a team that has won a major trophy are applauded on to the field by their opponents next time out. Its a simple sporting gesture, doesn’t mean too much but doesn’t do any harm either.

  20. Silver City 1888 on

Nice bit of mischief but I can only see the ASA as an establishmnet organisation that will find in favour of the establishment, regardless of the truth.

  21. BigNan we could demand as reparation all the medals and certificates awarded to the whole cheating bunch of them.

They all knew what was going on.

We wouldn’t see those medals but at every opportunity we could accuse every one of them “You have something that belongs to us ya durty, cheatin, blue nosed …

    You know the rest.

  22. tbj.

Maybe the ten million includes the wages of said transfers…then again…naw.

According to their own, they are trawling for players whose contracts are due to expire.

  23. Corkcelt I posted after the defeat by St Mirren that NL should have done that.

Simply because of the sheer nonchalance with which the players left the park.

    It annoyed me.

  24. I’ve been away all week, with little time even to read. Catching up today, I think there have been some steps towards a better time for Scottish football, when it’s not run for the benefit of just one club.

The Dunfermline and Coventry situations have been very good reminders that Charles Green has led them a merry dance to wring cash out of them, aided by the same old ‘scratch-me-I-like-it’ Scottish sports media. Some old questions that they hoped no one would ask again have come back.

The call to Radio Clyde by the creditor is dynamite.

Everyone would be so much better off if they would just stop pretending that Rangers hadn’t died.
