Alert on the left, the gravy in Ronny’s pie

761

I’m largely ignoring the defensive lapses of last night. There will be at least two changes for the Champions League, and everyone will be far more attentive. It was, though, a concern that both Kilmarnock goals came as a result of Celtic’s left-hand-side being breached.

Malmo’s Age Hareide will have noted this, and whatever attacking resources he deploys next week are likely to try to exploit a perceived weakness. Ronny will have a choice: Izzie or Charlie? My money’s on the latter.

Tom Rogic didn’t have the perfect game but it was good to see him take so much responsibility. He’s looked like the office junior of the Celtic midfield on previous outings, as did Nir Bitton for most of his early games. If Rogic has genuine talent, we need to let him find his feet in games like these.

Ronny Deila answered all questions after the game but gave little away. I hope his dismissal of injury worries was accurate. Kris Commons is the gravy in his pie. We are capable of beating anyone without Kris, but we need him doing his thing if we are to take a comfortable victory to Sweden.

Yesterday I was looking over Celtic’s form in November 2006 after doing an interview for a French magazine, who are writing a piece on Shunsuke Nakamura. That was the month Naka scored the goal which sent us top of the group and into the knock-out rounds of the Champions League for the first time – with a game to spare, no less.

It’s less well remembered that earlier that month we went out of the League Cup after losing at home to Falkirk on penalties, or that we couldn’t win at Easter Road immediately after the Champions League win.

Indifferent performances and results surround some of our greatest European performances. Getting it right when it counts is what matters.

  3. Morning hope all well, fascinating little move on the cards, I think young Allan may surprise a few folk, maybe Ronni isn’t signing him for the midfield maybe he has forward plans for him….. We just aren’t clicking up front, just something missing and I don’t think it would take much to make it click. Just a thought someone just playing about outside the 18yrd box. Whit do I know…

Not having ever coached at a decent level I would see exactly that scenario with Scott Allan. He is a Commons type player. He is more withdrawn at Hibs but I believe he can score more goals. His final ball in the main is excellent. He needs to work on his fitness but if he wants to work and learn he can be a top player IMHO.

I have been championing him since middle of last season for Celtic. He has played 90 odd games in his career so far and half of them were at Hibs last season. Most people who rubbish him watched him in the play offs when he was jaded. If people watch him when Hibs scored 4 goals twice against Sevco last season he was outstanding.

He is a punt. Good player with the tools to be very very good. Up to him what he wants to do in the game.

Farewell to McGeouch. Wasn’t quite going to make it in Ronny’s team and that happens but scored one of Celtic Parks greatest goals. Good more for him. Don’t like to see players held back so hope he has a great career. Great move for Henderson too. Hope he gets a lot of games and comes back a better player for it. At his age he needs 20+ first games a season. Ronny knows what he is doing with the youngsters get them playing first team games.

Good business all round I reckon. Time will tell if I am right or not.

Joe ,what the Malmo managar also saw was a Celtic team minus,Lustig,Boyata,Broony,Armstrong, and only a wee Cameo from Commons, and also Jo Hansen playing out of position.

A far different Celtic team await him,and he knows it.We got the same guff from Starjnan manager. If I were him I would be more worried about my own team. One good result this season.

  6. Now that we’ve signed a player who possesses a “killer pass” does this mean the other players will start running into good positions to accept these “killer passes”?

I agree 100%.I love the way the boy wants to play football. He is always looking to hurt opponents with the killer pass, sometimes too much.RD will hone this. His stamina I think is stretched at Hibs.He is everywhere.Tackling back,(A lot of yellows last season),always looking for the ball, but my god he loves to be on the ball.A fair bit of “Gallusness”about him, which I like. You are right about him destroying Sevco at Easter Rd,but the pass of the season was in Hibs 2-0 win at Ibrox. From the touchline he threaded a ball through to the penalty spot for Hibs to score.Fantastic vision.I think RD sees our future playmaker in him.He has all the tools, just needs a bit of fine tuning.JC will come in handy there.

I think Griff would have scored more than once if commons had stayed on the pitch longer on Wednesday.

We clearly need some new additions of real quality but that business won’t be done until we know where we play in Europe this season. Allan is a ball player. If he clicks at Celtic he is exactly the type of player people like to watch.

You are forgetting the boy Carmicheal, bought from QOTS,who roasted Sevco every game last season.Terrific wee player. If Stubbs forgets the “3 at the back”nonsense, they will give Sevco a real run.

Brief comment on Hibs. I think they are way short at the back of decent players. Sevco will win the league. Hibs don’t need to win the league that would be a bonus for them. Promotion is the goal.

My Hibee mate thinks Hibs will win the league though and has weighed in massively on them at 6/4. I hope for his sake he is right because the cash he has staked is mental!

Agree with all of that – he puts some great balls into the box from deep positions which are sometimes impossible to defend and his passing in general is good and hopefully helps improve our ball retention.

Where he fits in week to week initially will be interesting. I think Stokes move will happen within the near future no with Armstrong and GMS able to operate wide. When it does happen I think some would do well to remember that although he struggled to produce the goods in big games Stokes still hit about 60 goals for the club and provided value for money!

Things going really well. Planning another wee voyage from Darien up through Central America and West coast via BC to Alaska.

Will then decide on a possible foray into Russia and Mongolia and another toe dipping in the delights of Burma………So there a wis sitting in a Yangon eaterie come bar….the temperature dropped to a chilly 23 degs C. The folk in the bar suggested i try a body warming cocktail special.

I explained that 23 degs C was NOT cold, but since there was alcohol In their drink, I would try it.

So a moment later having sipped at the amber green and white concoction I can say that it WAS very warming.

I christened it a Burmese barmaid’….. So on many a really cold Glasgow summer’s evening after I’ve had a few pints I have been known to cry out for a Burmese Barmaid to keep me warm…..and then had to explain that it was a a drink that I wanted.

  19. Wee bit of hun fun last night at work with a gaffer, the cloven hoof one and that’s the only reason he’s a gaffer starts to, for the first time in three years talk about football. Do ye still go to the games Mick, yes. Oh were ye up last night, No I don’t do Killi. That was a sneaky penalty he took, aye it was nice says I.

Ten minutes later I’m looking at my phone, that’s Scott Allan signed, his wee head burled round like yon in the Exorcist, hus he…wide eyed and excited. Aye for Celtic…

Now for that alone, Scott Allan will be a good signing.

  21. Middle to front Hibs are fine – they need an good experienced centre-back- also not keen on goalie – up via play-off best I can see, hopefully at the expense oh Hamilton.

Like any player Allan will have to fight his way into the team. Initially I think it will be when Ronny is rotating the squad or when Commons is being subbed. He has shown with Biton though that if a chance in the team is taken he will stick by a player.

I always liked the look of Allan but he has work to do to get in the side. I think he will be a player most fans will enjoy watching. Pretty much blue print of a Ronny player as described in his speech seminar thing.

This will be karma for sevco, who had no intention of signing Scott Allan…… their sole intention was to to unsettle Hibs and Scott before their crucial game and their PR SPIN is now coming back to bite them big time ….. You reap what you sow………oh, and we also get a very good prospect for a very reasonable fee ……again, good business, Celtic (always assuming he will pass the medical)

ABSOLUTELY ……. these players need game time and, with Hibs paying part of their wages for a season, we recoup the transfer fee ……no-brainer ……. good business……..it certainly would piss the Hun meeja right off, and I don’t think ming would be too pleased at being clearly ‘exposed’ either (not to mention the hunrage) …… so many pluses, assuming it goes ahead
