Amazonians, the Window of Opportunity

643

“It’s just a dream come true”, the words of 20-year-old Holmbert Fridjonsson, who today signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic and will join the club on 1 January.  5’ 9” manager, Neil Lennon, told Celticfc.net that the 6’3” striker is “a good size”, perhaps giving a glimpse into the innermost thoughts guiding Celtic’s recruitment policy, for those who have not noted the collection of Amazonians now in hoops.

Holmbert will push for a place with Anthony Stokes, Teemu Pukki and Amido Balde; Georgios Samaras is seldom used as a conventional striker.  He has made 45 career appearances, five fewer than Victor Wanyama when he signed for Celtic, also as a 20-year-old.

A year ago, when Victor was busy declining a new contract offer, we talked about the window of opportunity, when you have enough appearances to judge a player, but not so many that the world and their grannie knows about him.  We concluded that less than 30 appearances would be enough.  Victor made a total of 61 Celtic appearances but was his stock rose stratospherically after 30-odd games. The stats suggest we should catch them between 30 and 60 appearances.

Stunning result for Gordon Strachan’s Scotland last night.  Keep an eye on that guy, he’s got talent.

Really looking forward to another great charity night at the Columba Club, Blantyre, on Friday, starting at 8pm, where we are having a Q&A with myself, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville, in aid of the Lourdes Fund.  These are always great nights, tickets are available at the door, get along and say ‘hello’.

Many thanks to the hundreds of you have now ordered the CQN Annual, and for all the encouraging feedback.  It’s a bit big for a stocking filler, unless perhaps you’re an Amazonian.

See you Friday.

R*ng*rs: SPFL board considers pursuing £250,000 fine

    ————–

It will be interesting to see how this squares with Neil Doncaster’s secret side-letter which (if Charlotte’s revelation was genuine) stated that, notwithstanding the 5WA, the SPL would not take action against Sevco for rule breaches by RFC related to EBTs.

Completely agree. SKY’s original footage has clearly been doctored with a brutal assault being cut.

It would be great to see the club highlighting this along with the work they’re already doing.

  5. Same club?

    The Scottish Professional Football League

board is considering pursuing Rangers for

    £250,000.

The amount relates to a fine levied by an

    independent Scottish Premier League

commission on Rangers Football Club PLC’s

(RFC PLC) use of a tax scheme.

SPFL lawyers examined recovering the money

under the Five-Way Agreement – which

granted Rangers membership of the Scottish

    Football Association.

Any claim to the company’s liquidators would

    likely yield a smaller amount.

Liquidators BDO are in the process of

examining claims of creditors of RFC PLC.

As such the SPFL board has decided it is

reasonable to try to pursue the full amount

from The Rangers Football Club Ltd, although

no timescale has been set as to when to do

    this.

The SPFL declined to comment on the

situation when asked by BBC Scotland.

The Five-Way Agreement gave the football

authorities power to recover football debts

from the new owners of the Ibrox club.

A condition of the transfer of the club’s

Scottish Football Association licence was the

    payment of all football debts.

In a financial report produced by the

administrators Duff & Phelps, several clubs in

Scotland, England and Europe were listed as

    being owed funds.

The company’s former chief executive Charles

Green claimed last August that those debts

    have been settled.

In February, Rangers Football Club PLC was

fined £250,000 by the Lord Nimmo Smith-

chaired SPL commission after it found that

payments from its Employee Benefit Trust

scheme were not disclosed to the football

    authorities.

The commission found that the company’s

management did not take professional advice

    on disclosing the payments.

The findings also stated that the current

owners should not be held responsible for any

breaches made by the previous company.

The investigation relates to the period

between 2000-11 when Rangers operated the

tax benefit scheme, which was also the

subject of a long-running tax tribunal.

  6. Its simple: same club? Pay the debts.

New club? Debts gone along with history.

Keep pretending? BDO ought to be acting to get the money back for creditors of oldco.

    Its called checkmate.

  7. Bada

Nothing you’ve said could I disagree with.

The Amsterdam Police are actually the secondary issue in a sense, of what happened, because I don’t believe they singled out Celtic and they would have acted as they did

against any large gathering of fans.

They do it randomly Manchester Utd 80 arrests etc, etc

The coverage by the Scottish media was a manufactured story, and they gleefully

pounced on the policing and turned it into thier own pre scripted ancient anti

    Celtic agenda.

It’s a tough job for Celtic and tokenism of banning an excrescence such as Hugh

Keevins, – just won’t do the job, I think thats what Paul67 means about bans,

and how they are ineffective unworkable or worthless.

Celtic should revisit our own mission statement to include independent Media misrepresentation, and when such as the Amsterdam fiasco reportage happens

Celtic’s legal department, in tandem with modern Celtic media swings into

    action.

The Americans would sue the pants off them.

  11. I think that it is clear that it should be the police and not the fans that should be put away. The SMSM have went absolutely silent on this. If Celtic fans had been guilty of anything in Amsterdam it would still be THE major story today and for weeks ahead.
