Amazonians, the Window of Opportunity

643

“It’s just a dream come true”, the words of 20-year-old Holmbert Fridjonsson, who today signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic and will join the club on 1 January.  5’ 9” manager, Neil Lennon, told Celticfc.net that the 6’3” striker is “a good size”, perhaps giving a glimpse into the innermost thoughts guiding Celtic’s recruitment policy, for those who have not noted the collection of Amazonians now in hoops.

Holmbert will push for a place with Anthony Stokes, Teemu Pukki and Amido Balde; Georgios Samaras is seldom used as a conventional striker.  He has made 45 career appearances, five fewer than Victor Wanyama when he signed for Celtic, also as a 20-year-old.

A year ago, when Victor was busy declining a new contract offer, we talked about the window of opportunity, when you have enough appearances to judge a player, but not so many that the world and their grannie knows about him.  We concluded that less than 30 appearances would be enough.  Victor made a total of 61 Celtic appearances but was his stock rose stratospherically after 30-odd games. The stats suggest we should catch them between 30 and 60 appearances.

Stunning result for Gordon Strachan’s Scotland last night.  Keep an eye on that guy, he’s got talent.

Really looking forward to another great charity night at the Columba Club, Blantyre, on Friday, starting at 8pm, where we are having a Q&A with myself, Phil Mac Giolla Bhain and Paul McConville, in aid of the Lourdes Fund.  These are always great nights, tickets are available at the door, get along and say ‘hello’.

Many thanks to the hundreds of you have now ordered the CQN Annual, and for all the encouraging feedback.  It’s a bit big for a stocking filler, unless perhaps you’re an Amazonian.

See you Friday.

I’m an old yin who remembers it well and still think that King Harold was very unlucky at the darts! : > )”

I remember very clearly watching it…I even wanted them to win. That all changed 4 years later when I cheered on W Germany and laughed at Peter “The Cat” Bonetti (before he played for Dundee Utd).

Goldstar10- with respect any ole old building will deteriorate if it is neglected.

I’m sure the ole school would scrub up well, if it had been allowed to do so.

With the pending demolition is access to the Gazebo now denied?

  3. Vanguard Huns refuse to see the funny side – and why should they, they’re having to fight impartiality:

“I have seen and read comments and articles which support Lawwells claims that it was an attempt at humour, and some try to dismiss it as banter and claim that Rangers supporters need to ‘lighten up’, so let me address those comments.

When someone tells you a joke the first time, you might find it funny. You may even find it funny when you hear it a second time, but if you were told the same joke over and over again every day for almost two years, it would become at the very least tiresome, and to most people very annoying.

Rangers supporters are passionate about our club. There is no other football club in the world who could have survived what we went through, and still take world record breaking crowds to football matches in the lowest tiers of senior football. Rangers supporters are without a doubt the best in the world. We have seen our club attacked from both outside and within: attacks which continue to this day. We have been lied to by the authorities, and other clubs, we have been treated illegally, we have seen our media rites stolen from us in return for being allowed to play football, and we have had to fight media bias and impartiality [terrible, Sammy, just terrible] in reporting throughout the last 20 months.

When the media, club representatives of teams throughout Scotland and rival supporters started describing our club as a newco, it hurt to the very core of each and every true Rangers supporter. Since then we have seen it repeated almost daily for 20 months. It wasn’t a joke then and it isn’t now. It wasn’t funny then and it isn’t now. It never was a joke, it was a stick used to beat the Rangers supporters, to wind them up and antagonise them. It was used to inflame an already harshly treated support, still reeling from the illegal sanctions imposed upon us by the footballing authorities in Scotland.”

The old school is / was no more iconic than the old Celtic Park.

Each was of it’s time, but, it’s time to move on.

    Nostalgia belongs in the past.

  6. goldstar10

You are correct, and it has probably had it’s day.

And I know things move on, but it has been a permanent fixture for so long that it is part of ‘my’ east end. (So are they bloody Pylons I hear you say). I have some old photos at home of the classrooms.

I haven’t seen the plans of what is replacing it, but I’m sure it will reflect the changes.

Agreed. But it suits them to be ambiguous. If they say it’s a new club they make it less attractive commercially (TV deals, etc). If they say it’s the same club then any other club with debts will dump them in the same way.

  8. The basement and most of the ground floor of the school were flooded for a long time,so possibly the damage contributed to the decision to demolish it.

I was up at Parkhead yesterday. London Rd is still open but as I drove up Kerrydale St I was confronted by a loooonnnnggg metal fence.

I had to collect something from the main door and to gain admittance I had to drive back round to the bus park and then walk from the steps at the top over to the entrance.

Certainly yesterday there was no access to main stand turnstiles by walking up Kerrydale St though I’m not sure if this will change for Saturday.

    From the Website

THIS Saturday (November 23) will see a significant change to the matchday routine for many supporters as the construction work to prepare the Stadium for the Commonwealth Games gets underway.

    Stadium map details HERE

The main change sees the closure of Kerrydale St for entry and exit, meaning supporters who are located in the Main South Stand will be required to enter via the East and the West of the Stadium.

On exiting the Stadium after the match, the Gate leading to the East will remain closed as standard for home matches and this means that all supporters exiting the Main South Stand will be required to head West and either exit via the stairs which lead to Davaar St and on to London Road or towards Janefield St leading towards the retail park and Gallowgate.

We fully understand and appreciate that this represents a significant change to a great many supporters and we ask everyone, particularly those who approach the Stadium from London Road to come along early on Saturday.

Equally after the match, we ask that supporters are patient and allow for some additional time whilst everyone becomes familiar with the new matchday routine.

NO PROVISION FOR PUBLIC CAR PARKING

Of course, the new arrangements have a huge implication on Car Parking and we would like to advise that we no longer have any provision at the Stadium for public car parking, if you do not have a pass or a permit please do not bring your car to Stadium.

The new parking arrangements are detailed below.

Supporters´ Coaches: The Velodrome, accessing from Clyde Gateway.

The Club will provide a shuttle for disabled and infirm supporters. However, this will be limited and can only run pre-match. We would suggest in such cases that supporters make provision to assist in getting these fans to and from the Stadium

Jock Stein 1 (Formerly Upper Coachpark): Located on Janefield St from the Gallowgate.

This car park will house disabled supporters with a blue badge on a first come, first served basis, spaces are limited so please come early. This car park will also house Corporate badge holders.

Jock Stein 2: Located off the Gallowgate.

This car park will house Corporate and disabled badge holders only.

Clyde Gateway (Formerly Lower Coach Park): Located on the Clyde Gateway between Gallowgate and London Road.

This will house Corporate, Club Officials and Guests only.

Dalriada 1: Located behind the Lisbon Lions Stand entry from Springfield Road.

This will house Corporate pass holders only.

Lisbon Lions 1: Located behind the Lisbon Lions Stand entry from Springfield Road.

This will house matchday staff with a valid pass only.

It’s normally a fire that leads to approval to demolish inconvenient listed buildings in Glasgow, so a flood would certainly be a change.
