The sun shone, McStay’s Maestro’s ‘Celtic’ won from being two goals down and 25,000 people contributed to War Child, Unicef and the Rio Ferdinand Foundation.  Yesterday was another defining yardstick on the Celtic journey.

Getting the balance of these games right, in order to provide an actual ‘match’, is difficult, but the two sides managed it.  There were fewer Directioners there to see Louis Tomlinson than last year, but their contribution to the causes was still welcome.

Frank McAvennie scored a classic Macca goal.  Hollywood A-lister James McAvoy converted a penalty kick and looked as happy as you or I would in the circumstances.  We’re going to struggle when Tom Boyd retired from the Legends game.  Simon Donnelly and Bobby Petta looked like they could still do a job in the pro game, but special mention has to go to Gary Tank Commander (Greg McHugh).  The words “Nice, Lubo”, left my lips as I mistook Greg for someone else after a deft piece of skill.  Don’t ask me to explain.

It wasn’t football as you know it, but it was Celtic supporters doing what they do best – helping those in need.

All this came a day after the Paradise to Cardenden Cycle 2014, when a group of fans cycled from Celtic Park to John Thomson’s grave for the Celtic FC Foundation.

The Foundation is not the club, it is you, me and thousands like us who believe Celtic is something greater.  It works in four arenas:

Health
Equality
Learning
Poverty

There’s no obligation for Celtic fans to get involved, or to cherish any of the above, but I know many of us get a whole lot more out of Celtic by anchoring to these principles.

There’s a sense that we’ll see a new Celtic on Saturday.  Looking forward to it immensely.

  1. I think Hibs should give Darren a call with a view to sorting out a short term deal. They are badly in need and looks like O’Dea would be easy to deal in.

  4. Anyone else mildly uncomfortable about the fact that we went through the entire transfer window without being seriously linked to a left back? (maybe we were and I missed it)

However, Izzy has been….not so good lately, and our only real stand in for him is Mulgrew who wears Adidas Diving Boots and is skinned regularly when playing left back.

Just a little concerning for me, but I’m still pretty confident of the season ahead despite the above and the poor start.

  6. My mate living here in Oslo is a Celtic man. (that’s the football bit sorted.)

He comes from Nairn. And he is a 100% Yesser. Has arranged flights back home to vote on the 18th.

Last week he phoned his maw just to check he was properly registered. His maw said: “Oh, no…. I took your name off the electoral register to save money on the council tax… Did I not tell you?” So no vote.

After a frank exchange of views on the subject with his wee maw, he calmed down a bit and said “Well, at least you’re there to vote Yes.”

    His maw replied: “Well… oh dear… I’m voting No…”

Laugh? I nearly bought a round.

Unfortunately my family day out at this wonderful event was marred by 3 nuggets (who were there with their families). Their language, their constant verbal abuse of players (both teams), they stood up for most of the game and the fact they were hammered and oblivious to the fact the section was full of young kids. At one point one of them verbally abused his young daughter (she can’t have been older than 5 or 6) calling her some disgusting names and threatening to pour a cup of coke over her head for “being a spoilt we f*****g c**t”. They ended up sitting in section (143) of the north stand virtually on their own. My young daughter asked me if we could move because the guy was scaring her and she couldn’t see. It was her first game and I thought it would be a great way to introduce her to Celtic, sadly on enquiring if she wanted to catch another game with me some time she replied “no daddy, I’ll just watch it on the TV I didn’t like it”

All you idiots voting yes,if you win hope you don,t get ill as whats left of the NHS in scotland will be billions of pounds short of what it gets just now,and with fatso giving tax cuts to big business we will have even less than we get just now under the uk gov,t,what will he do raise income tax and vat and alcoholic duty,oh yeah they already tried that and its all tied up in legal issues , the whole of the last 3 years have been wasted as those sentimental twats who believe in a shortbread box country with heroes like a scumbag murdering rustler like rob .roy and an australian version of a rubbish monarch, did feck all except try to bring economic devastation to scotland via separation have done nought else,The people I really blame are all the Labour voters who voted snp at the last election or stayed in the house or pub and did not vote,if they had done the right thing we would not be having this fiasco, and the fat granny shagger would have resigned or been replaced

  13. Anyone fancy reading something Celtic related for a wee change?

Here is a snippet from the new edition of CQN Magazine which will be out tomorrow – 116 pages all about football with only two wee mentions about the dreaded P word.

The following is taken from ON THE ONE ROAD feature by one of our great writers on the magazine and it’s about supporting Celtic home and away during 9IAR…

” When Jock Stein was appointed I just knew success would follow and I wanted to be part of it and follow the Bhoys everywhere I could.

The first game of Big Jock’s first full season was a League Cup sectional tie at Tannadice. As the song says “how are we to get there without a motor car?” Public transport would be the answer of course but it would be the longest journey I had made on my own. Then fate stepped in. Some 5 years earlier my mother’s brother Eddie had taken a job with Timex in Dundee. By now he had a managerial position and regularly commuted between his home in Monifieth and the factory in Besancon. The day before the game he would be flying in from France so arrangements were made to meet in the city centre and then get the train from Buchanan Street Station up to Dundee.

On the Saturday Eddie and I got the bus into Dundee and together we stood on the terracing to see Celtic lose 2-1. In fact Celtic lost 2 of their first 3 games but recovered to get to the last day of sectional matches on top of the group. Public transport had got me easily to Fir Park for the other away group game but the clincher would be back on Tayside. This time at Dens Park. The winner of that game would top the group. The family option was not available this time so it looked as if I would have to make my own way. Then a suggestion by a school mate that would change my whole approach to going to games and introduce me in a sense to a new way of life.

“Why not come on the Supporters Bus?” That was John Fagan’s idea. He went regularly with his Dad, cousin and uncle. I had never really thought of using a Supporters Club bus before. With Celtic Park not far away by public transport I had never seen the need. Going to school in Coatbridge meant you could not avoid knowing about the Celtic Supporters buses. There were plenty – Dundyvan, Phil Coles, Merryston, Hutton Street, Whiflett St Mary’s etc. At that time the Celtic support did not enjoy the same reputation as now and to some people these buses were viewed as carriers of drunken hooligans so I was not sure what my parents would think when I asked them. However my father, although by now only an occasional attender at home games, had been a founder member of the Carfin Celtic Supporters Club after the War. He reckoned it would be all right and I was set to go.

John was a member of the Kirkwood Club and that so it was with them that I set out on that sunny Saturday at midday on the road and the miles to Dundee. It was at that stage my most enjoyable trip to a Celtic game. In those days there were no motorways or bye-passes so we actually went through places like Stirling, Bridge of Allan, Dunblane, Aberuthven, Blackford, Auchterarder and Perth. Often at a crawl with the locals looking on at this line of passing buses with their singing passengers.

I found that the Kirkwood bus was to be like many others I would travel on over the next few years. No drink was allowed on the bus and although it was not the type of place the archetypical maiden aunt would enjoy there was never any real problems. The passengers were in the main ordinary working class guys (very few women). They could seem raucous but that was mainly due to the passion for Celtic. They were knowledgeable about their football and in a time when there were hardly any books about Celtic their stories were how the next generation learned the Club’s history. There were generally opinions on politics as well and some of my early interest in Irish history was stimulated by hearing the debates and songs on these buses.

Anyway on that day in September 1965 we arrived in Dundee after a journey of around 2 and a half hours. I had enjoyed the banter on the way up and had participated in that other great custom of the Supporters buses- the first goal sweepstake. I had drawn “Celtic 11” When the teams were announced I discovered that position would be occupied by John Hughes. As Big Yogi was himself from Coatbridge I considered it a good omen. As it was John Divers opened the scoring and Celtic went on to win 3-1 and thus progress through to the quarter finals.

It was on the journey back that I was really struck by the impact of the travelling Celtic support. As we waited at the end of Clepington Road to get on the main road all I could see was a long line of buses all the way down the Kingsway starting the journey back down the road. I really now felt part of the Celtic family.”

    What a horrible story.

I took my wee girl to her first game a couple of seasons ago (Hibs, 2-2) and she was enthralled.

The only sour note was after the second Hibs goal when a guy in the row in front lost it and there was a bit of salty language.

But the 2 guys he was with looked round at us, elbowed him and told him to “cool it in front of the wee lassie”.

The guy apologised profusely both then and at full time – to her.

I hope your wee one is able to give it another go sometime, hopefully with no muppets there to spoil it for her this time.

The Labour Party is from England.

Labour have never done anything for the people of Scotland.

All they have ever done is run down to Westminster, and lived the London life.

As soon as they were in the bright lights of London- Scotland was the last thing on their mind.

What was also funny was the bitching amongst them at other groups of young females shouting to get loui’s attention. 1Dr’s actually hate one another. I asked the young girl bursting my ear drums beside me if they actually hear the music for the screaming. She said no, I don’t go to listen to the music. Doh!!!

Left backs are the ole Celtic achilles heel even when we get the best one we’ve had in years, they still don’t pass the CQN left back test.

Emilio has been a pretty consistent performer for Celtic but he’ll remain in the ‘tidy wee LB category’ and hasn’t been able to replicate the consistency of his first season, and his ankle break was undoubtedly a factor.

The ‘gaps’ in his game could also be attributed to his desire and Celtic’s instruction to play fast, loose and too far forward.
