Anywhere but Warsaw

868

My thought on looking at our potential opponents this morning was ‘Anywhere but Warsaw’.  Our man Zbyszek tells me Legia were awful in the first leg in Warsaw against St Pat’s, where they drew 1-1 courtesy of a late goal, but we’ve been there.  Henrik Larsson & Co. drew 0-0 against St Pat’s at Celtic Park before winning 0-2 in the return leg.  St Patrick’s have a big job ahead if they are to progress.

A trip to Ireland on Champions League qualification duty for the second year running would suit Celtic, especially our Irish-based supporters, but my money is on a more testing trip to Poland; Ronny’s pulse should have quickened on the news.

Zbyszek doesn’t reckon have what it takes to eliminate Celtic. All being equal, that may be the case, but summer football will be unpredictable for both clubs.

I am, of course, being completely disrespectful to KR Reykjavik, who we annihilate next week.

  1. Por citetro you are correct state sponsored sectarianism has been rife for over 200 years. But I would suggest that during the 80s and 90s we began to change the debate. Unfortunately we are now seeing reversals of that. Particular concern for me is police Scotland who are quite literally a law unto themselves and targeting Catholics and celtic supporters.

TBB celtic are desperate for the extra income that the Huns will bring. They want it and believe they need it. I think the board also believe that sevco will not be a threat for years. Ah how we continually underestimate the cheating that will go on. I think the board believe in the old firm brand and want it back.

What would I change? I would retain our top talent for longer. Have an ambition to actually compete in the champions league. Right now it’s not clear to me what celtics ambition is?

Curious to know how you know what Sammi was on ?

One of my bugbears is happyclappers telling people they don’t know anything about the players deals then trot out their own guesstimates and expect not to be challenged on the same grounds.

Excellent post – I am an original poster and long term lurker. Trolls are a constant source of irritation but are also a sign of the power of CQN. Best to scroll the Trolls and ignore!

Whilst Paul’s blogs can shape discussion the CQN community has a life of its own that is influenced by, in the main, a mutual love of Celtic. The CQN community is caring, compassionate, opinionated and consists of thousands of unique individuals.

Individuals change they get older, they become adults (some of us!) they marry, they get jobs, they have careers, they have children, they retire and unfortunately they die. All of these personal changes in individuals do not, in themselves, change CQN they contribute to it’s stability and to the continuation of our community.

People with opinions that are expressed with repetition and venum tend to have formed them through indoctrination. Either in their homes, workplace or choice of reading – opinions should be formed from experience and from opening up to others opinions through constructive debate – CQN should be a place for broadening opinions NOT for hardening them!

“Your assumptions are your windows on the world. Scrub them off every once in a while, or the light won’t come in” – Isaac Asimov.

Paul, as ever, thank you for creating and maintaining this wonderful blog, it has touched the lives of thousands through charity, compassion and … Just being there for our fellow CQNers in times of trouble.

We shouldn’t hear any bumf over the rest of the season about players bring tired because of games close together please if we’re choosing to do it now.

I find Kojo very knowledgeable about Celtic players certainly he knows more about the youngsters we have on our books than I do. Now taking into account that he lives in Las Vegas he must have some way of gleaning information about our youngsters and he must take time in his busy schedule to seek out that information. He does appear to upset some posters on CQN when he posts about issues other than Celtic but they are only his opinions which he like any of the rest of us is entitled to. H.H.

I think most folk would agree with that. Best I can come up with… to continue to do things well ’til something changes for the better. Meantime, we’ll have our moments, but they’ll be ephemeral.

I like to believe the Celtic Nation is a slow burning strategy put in motion to ensure we have options in the mid to long term future if nothing changes in the near future.

  11. Joe Filippis Haircut on

The Battered Bunnet. I think your post gives the reason that we cannot fill the ground anymore.Back in the Bunnets time there was an optimism we were building a new stadium we had signed several quality players and generally things were on the up at Paradise hence 60,000 turning out for home games. Now as you say we dont see clear ambition we appear to be trying to tread water and thus it is likely that this coming season 40,000 gates will be considered a success but of course they are not. H.H.

  12. Corkcelt,

no idea if you’re comments are directed at me. However, mine were in reply to Winning Captains. I re-joined, as is my right and occasional wont, because I have been part of the ‘community’ for a decade, and posted regularly in a different time. I only used via_nirone as an alternative blogname. There are more good posters lost than remain.

I don’t really know who’s good, bad or trolling on here anymore, but I can see lots of people who were no better than trolls (albeit with green enough credentials to be accepted) who seem to be part of the new normal.

The good parts that remain on CQN don’t really interest me (better to be honest), and the debate is not what it was. I simply can’t understand how Canalmar is still allowed to post on here… it’s appeasment gone wrong.

We certainly do have stability, but I do also feel the Board are preserving our Celtic traditions / culture very well ……. my only current reservation is that, as another poster stated, they do seem to want derhun back, and that’s not acceptable to me…….since their demise, I have NEVER been happier as a Celtic supporter….

Sorry, I don’t agree with you on this …….. the reason we had so much support for Celtic at that time was ‘relief’…….many Celtic supporters rallied to the cause of resurrecting Celtic from a very precarious situation, as reflected in the World Record share issue….. and, unlike derhun, we would do it all again…

  21. Dallas Dallas where the heck is Dallas on

Bobby Murdoch, despite us not winning the league that day, the fact the team came back from two goals down despite it being against one of the worst sticky bun teams, gave us a wee bit of pride back.

We were in the front row of the Broomloan top tier that day and had a great view of our four goals and of the extraordinary walk on at the start of the second half.

That Dundee Utd game still grates. Gough had walked, it was 2 2 and with around ten minutes to go and we should have shut up shop but then we wanted all out attack and it cost us.

Hopefully, we can now look back thirty years to appreciate how good Utd and the Dons were at that time even taking into account Miller trying to ref games, that git McLeish, Cooper and Simpson booting lumps out of us, they were a good side as their European record proved.

United should have got to the 1984 European Cup Final but were cheated out of it.

Jim McLean was a miserable git but that United team were were very good.

I too would like us to hang onto the victors for longer and/or charge more. And I’ll be pleasantly surprised if both FF and VVD are celtic players in a year’s time.

But in saying all that I’m not privy to the inner finances of CFC and football in general so I can’t give a definitive yes/no on every board decision.

I reckon few of us on here do have that detailed info and perspective. Doesn’t prevent some very definitive views being offered as something close to gospel.

In many ways I agree with you both. And these skelves in my erchie are killing me from sitting on this fence!

What doesn’t kill the blog makes it stronger and I do not believe the blog has ever been stronger, IMO when companies and political activists place agents on this site to drive their agenda it shows how powerful they think this blog is and that is a sign of the strength of the blog. I say let it happen, the blog always seems to bounce back from the destructive influences who are trying to sabotage, they’ve been trying for years and always ended up being sore losers.

Yep sometimes it gets tiresome but that’s the price we pay for being open to all, if the blog ever becomes exclusive then they have won.
