Anywhere but Warsaw

868

My thought on looking at our potential opponents this morning was ‘Anywhere but Warsaw’.  Our man Zbyszek tells me Legia were awful in the first leg in Warsaw against St Pat’s, where they drew 1-1 courtesy of a late goal, but we’ve been there.  Henrik Larsson & Co. drew 0-0 against St Pat’s at Celtic Park before winning 0-2 in the return leg.  St Patrick’s have a big job ahead if they are to progress.

A trip to Ireland on Champions League qualification duty for the second year running would suit Celtic, especially our Irish-based supporters, but my money is on a more testing trip to Poland; Ronny’s pulse should have quickened on the news.

Zbyszek doesn’t reckon have what it takes to eliminate Celtic. All being equal, that may be the case, but summer football will be unpredictable for both clubs.

I am, of course, being completely disrespectful to KR Reykjavik, who we annihilate next week.

I’ve got a suggestion for you, if you don’t mind ? It’ll save you time and some brain power re-jigging the same stuff.

Just Copy and Paste your latest, tired and weary message, and regurgitate it daily.

It mystifies me why you bother writing different formats of the same jaundiced diatribe over and over again.

  2. Winning Captains

Reading your words fills me with concerns and sorrow. I increasingly see monikers pop up that I haven’t seen for a while only to read that they’ve popped in, been unimpressed/disgusted/etc by what they’ve seen and the disappear off again.

And I consider myself pretty recent on here so I’ll only notice a small part of what’s going on.

Some offensive stuff is pretty clear cut to me and I would support it bring acted on. But I recognise that’s only my view. Others may differ. Paul may differ and ultimately it’s his creation I believe.

An (even) bigger challenge is what you might call the borderline stuff. The constant contrariness with a wee dash of political/racial/religious ‘spice’ thrown in as a barb. No clear case for binning them – and they’ll claim them as legitimate views and rightly highlight CFC to be a broad church. But they can at times create a backdrop the many would want scroll past or log out to avoid.

    What to do?

For the former group. More clear cut but still pretty difficult.

For the latter, more difficult still.

For the most part maybe all/the best thing is as HT suggested earlier and others frequently do – be sure that the good ghuys n ghals on here (re)claim CQN as the best place for real Celtic fans to hing oot online.

Off oot to play the Carnoustie man’s course in the pishing rain with my hun brother in law.

Any sign of a hun victory will be met with a swift 5 iron roon his noggin.

  4. The strength of CQN has always been the wide range of topics and discussions that it hosts.

On what other football site do you also see people post obscure questions seeking information about a city or country, or looking for an obscure part, or help with a problem with an electrical device – and get a variety of helpful responses within seconds? What other site discusses books and music, the weather and the golf, politics and sausage recipes?

The issues that have arisen over the years are the same as they have always been – and that didn’t change during the period we had mods. The vast majority of regular posters have always prepared to state their case, deal with discussions reasonably and try to persuade, or agree to disagree.

The problem always comes with the few who break the language rule – just about the only CQN rule there is – or resort to personal attacks and abuse when their arguments fail. There have been a few posters who have caused issues, some racist posts, some repeat offenders. But there are very much the minority.

And what the trolls want is a response. Starve them of the replies and they will get bored. They will go elsewhere.

I would say to anyone thinking about leaving the site – think again. The vast majority here are good, decent posters. If we all stay and discuss, debate and converse then the others will leave.

Hamiltontim and Can I, I had seen a bit in the Times the other night about its licence being withdrawn as it had a Maggie Thatcher dying party but I didn’t realise it was immediate.

I passed Bar 67 on Thursday and there were no flags out. Some of the shops on London Road at the Barras have been done up so I’m unsure if the Council have told them to do so or have been given grants to get it done.

HamiltonTim, you mentioned last night about remembering games from the eighties & nineties more clearly than games last season.

I’m in that club. I remember more of games from1976 to the Centenary season than those in in the last twenty years despite most being available on Youtube.

I think we had less responsibility pre family, mortgage & work then and possibly that’s why games stuck more in our mind.

  7. If Celtic receive an offer for a player which exceeds what they think that player is worth, then they accept it. When the player then discusses financial terms with that club he finds that the wages on offer are maybe 3 times what he has at Celtic. Even if we wanted the player to stay we would have to match or beat the wage offered. It’s not just down to Celtic if he stays or goes. Southampton accepted offers for their players, Atletico Madrid over the last 2 seasons, Porto continually sell their best players, so do Ajax, and did Liverpool not just sell their best player. It’s the way football operates that’s to blame not Celtic PLC. Had the Lisbon Lions won the Champions League last year, how many of those players would still have been at Celtic this season por cierto.

The Foggy Dew was closed at an emergency hearing of the city’s licensing board.

Police Scotland asked licensing chiefs to review the licence after alleged “serious violence” and “sectarian, religious prejudice behaviour” within the premises.

Officers claimed the London Road bar should be closed after a string of incidents, including an alleged serious assault at the weekend.

The licensing board heard how police said there was a “lack of co-operation from management and licence holder” at the East End pub.

Chief Inspector Hilary Sloan said: “The management has completely failed to engage with us and that’s a big issue for us. We can’t predict what may happen in future. But there’s a likelihood that there will be further disorder as they have not taken on board any of the recommendations made by us.”

She asked for the closure order to be imposed for “sufficient time” for Police Scotland to return to the board for a review hearing of the premises.

It is the first time that closure order powers, within the licensing legislation, have been used in Glasgow Granting the order, Councillor Bill Butler said: “The board is satisfied that a closure order is necessary to prevent crime and disorder and secure public safety.”

The pub was named after a famous Irish ballad and was popular with both locals and city visitors. However, the bar caused controversy when it held a party to ”celebrate” the death of former Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher.

Police launched an investigation into the event after footage appeared on the internet.

Archie McIver, the solicitor appearing for the licence holder, East End Catering, told the board he had been instructed not to oppose any motion by the police.

The Foggy Dew’s designated premises manager, Lloyd Ingram, did not attend the hearing and no-one appeared on his behalf.

What doesn’t kill the blog makes it stronger and I do not believe the blog has ever been stronger, IMO when companies and political activists place agents on this site to drive their agenda it shows how powerful they think this blog is and that is a sign of the strength of the blog. I say let it happen, the blog always seems to bounce back from the destructive influences who are trying to sabotage, they’ve been trying for years and always ended up being sore losers.

Yep sometimes it gets tiresome but that’s the price we pay for being open to all, if the blog ever becomes exclusive then they have won.

There’s no direct comparison with Celtic in my Atletico post beyond the superficial. The point – if there is any – is that there are numerous valid business models in football, validity being determined by what is appropriate for the circumstances of each individual club.

Atleti was a basket case, close to going under a few years ago. Their income is modest in European terms, and their legacy financial problems mountainous.

They’ve developed their model based on what’s possible and what’s required, within a framework of what’s sustainable. Fair play to them, but it means every year they sell their best players at a significant financial gain, and start again the following season.

Celtic’s approach is different insofar as we are now in control of our business. Our problem is the manifest constraints in growing. We are where we are, pushed up against the glass ceiling, looking at the arses of the teams on the other side of the glass.

While I share your frustration, I don’t have your trip hammer response to immediacy. We are neither upsizing not downsizing. We are treading water, carefully perhaps, but essentially running on a development cycle that focusses on player within a framework of predictable finance.

It has been remarkably successful over the past 4 years, both football success and profit, to the point where we have surplus cash counted in 8 digits, and a decent European team led by a young manager with some new ideas.

We are in this position because of the approach to players, not despite it.

It’s not going to change anytime soon, simply, because it works. Most of the time.

In terms of ‘Rangers’, I wholly disagree with you. While competition in the league is to be welcomed, they won’t provide it any time soon. They don’t have the wherewithal, and they won’t self-generate it. It would take a transformation in their income and approach for them to get near us in the next 5 years, and Premiership ticket sales and TV money isn’t transformational, not even for Hamilton Accies.

They have no money, no youth development to speak of, no talent in their aging squad, a crumbling stadium and no where to go. Someone pumps in £30M to spend on players? Great, it’s gone in a season and leaves a huge legacy problem.

Celtic are not ‘waiting’ for “Rangers’ return”. Any sensible analysis would confirm the likelihood of Godot’s return before “Rangers” as we knew it. Even what we knew was a charade built on duplicity and dodgy tax deals. Sevco will be competing with Aberdeen, Dundee Utd, Motherwell for the European places, if they get their act together.

For Celtic, a Rangers team in the top league will shift a few more tickets, sell a few more Sky subscriptions, but beyond that, will not benefit or threaten us significantly. It is materially irrelevant over the coming 5 years. Beyond that? Who knows. It takes time to build a successful business and a successful football club. A long time.

I have never been to that bar but is it true that we have now seen the police use their powers to shut down two celtic bars now (Bairds being the other). I find this new found concern by the police interesting. I could recount countless tales of violence perpetrated against celtic supporters in pubs or outside them around Bridgetown or at the loudness tavern. I can remember the police standing by watching that violence and doing nothing. Indeed it took the death of a young celtic fan in Bridgetown before the police even paid attention.

  27. On this day that we are playing in Dresden, sad reports of a serious bus crash:

Nine dead and 40 hurt as three vehicles involved in accident on autobahn near Dresden

Nine people were killed and 40 injured when several buses crashed on a German motorway near the eastern city of Dresden.

The crash, which occured about 2 am local time on Saturday, involved a Polish coach and minibus and a Ukrainian coach, according to police spokesman Lutz Zoellner. He was unable to provide details about the victims.

The German public broadcaster MDR reported that seven of those killed were traveling in the minibus.

Citing a preliminary police report, MDR said the Polish coach hit the rear of the Ukrainian coach and then broke through the median barrier, crashing into the oncoming minibus.
