Anywhere but Warsaw

868

My thought on looking at our potential opponents this morning was ‘Anywhere but Warsaw’.  Our man Zbyszek tells me Legia were awful in the first leg in Warsaw against St Pat’s, where they drew 1-1 courtesy of a late goal, but we’ve been there.  Henrik Larsson & Co. drew 0-0 against St Pat’s at Celtic Park before winning 0-2 in the return leg.  St Patrick’s have a big job ahead if they are to progress.

A trip to Ireland on Champions League qualification duty for the second year running would suit Celtic, especially our Irish-based supporters, but my money is on a more testing trip to Poland; Ronny’s pulse should have quickened on the news.

Zbyszek doesn’t reckon have what it takes to eliminate Celtic. All being equal, that may be the case, but summer football will be unpredictable for both clubs.

I am, of course, being completely disrespectful to KR Reykjavik, who we annihilate next week.

    Natknow,

There are a number of bloggers on here who always come to life when there is a political debate on.

It always amuses me when they get called out or questioned on an ‘on the park’ issue, as it becomes evident they know zilch about football, and , whilst they may have a sympathy towards the hoops, they are not active supporters.

I also suspect that multiple users access one of the ‘blog names’ on here.

Anyway, on Tuesday , I think we will win 4 nil, with one in first half, and I suspect we will play Legia in next round and scrape through.

Also impressed by fact manager hasn’t signed anyone, and hopefully he will do his research on what is required, and who can deliver, before he spends his budget . Contrast this with Mowbray and Barnes, who blew budgets before they saw team play.

Saltires do you mean Charlie’s goal in the two one victory at Ibrox on new year’s day 1983? He scored two penalties in the four two game at Ibrox at the end of that season. In saying that, getting two penalties there at any time is a reason to rejoice.

  15. The Battered Bunnet on

Team building in the current era is a curious matter.

    Take a look at Atletico:

They won their first league championship in almost 20 years, and lost the Champions League final in extra time having been the better team in 90 mins. A high point in terms of football success.

    Their response?…

Sell their record breaking goal scorer and their left back to a Champions League competitor (who they knocked out in the semi final), sell their right winger, let their back up striker leave on a bosman, and with their goalkeeper leaving after a loan period, sell the other two experienced keepers on their books.

Myriad other players have been released, with a total income from player sales (so far) this summer of €70M, to add to the €50M they received from UEFA for their efforts in the Champions League.

To compensate, they’ve spent €50M, replacing each position – striker, left back, keeper etc – with each signing considerably below the level of the player sold.

What happened to the Lisbon money? Where’s the ambition?

Remember, this is the club who sold their top striker – Falcao – shortly after winning the Europa League in 2012, having sold Sergio Aguero the previous year.

I imagine AQN is in meltdown, with the board accused of downsizing by SydneyColchonero.

But the fact remains that in addition to building a new 70,000 seat stadium, the club is squaring its historic financial problems, including an eye watering €150M tax bill.

Put another way, the decades of massive overspending that brought nothing in terms of success since a double in 1996, have been replaced by a more grounded and rational strategy. They operate on a net gain on player sales – €20M surplus since 2010 – and are increasing revenues across all other steams. The strategy is to sort out the financial mess, create a football business that supports itself, and do this while winning on the pitch.

While the club may be regarded as the 3rd largest in Spain, it’s income is much closer to Celtic’s than Barca’s: Barca €500M; Atleti €120M; Celtic €90M.

Point? No point really. Just some random football stuff and some old hat.

That was when I KNEW I was gonna see Celtic win a title at home,at last.

It was magic watching the ball slap off his napper and into his own net.

Murdo’s was the icing on the cake. I like icing.

  18. The one day I am going to East Kilbride and no weather report on CQN – what is the world coming to?

The report is actually missing for a reason. Another CQNer has got fed up with the political stuff on here. There are a few posters in particular who seem intent in damaging what CQN is all about and you have to wonder what their true objective is.

I take the view expressed by Hamilton Tim that if good Celtic supporters take their exit they win as there will be less real Celtic men and women on the site.

Make no mistake what Paul started is pretty unique on the Internet. Maybe only Celtic supporters could get together to create what CQN is – it has decency, morality and compassion in spades. When something is so special it is shameful to neglect it and allow others with agendas to influence our perception of the community site we have all build by our contributions.

There is a Facebook page for CQNers – not the mag page – and on there this week there has been a discussion about chucking CQN due to two posters and also the political agenda pushers – one who outed himself as no friend of ours two weeks ago.

There was chat on Twitter that that muppet Chris Graham posts on here. Maybe just a rumour.

There is another poster who builds his Celtic credentials on quiet days when not much is happening only to kick the club or the support when there is some controversial issue.CQN has its very own Fifth

    Column.

The racist post and the aforementioned comments about CQN on Facebook were given to Paul earlier this week and he deleted the comment as soon as he could.

Paul seems to know so much about so many posters and has frankly way to much compassion for people who need it. (Hardly a failing actually it is hugely impressive). On a number of occasions people have been barred from CQN and sent a message via the mag Facebook page -asking for re admittance etc. Paul to my surprise would have a detailed knowledge of the individual’s circumstances and was using re-admission to CQN as an incentive to that person getting the help they needed.

On another occasion a poster who was having problems took it out on CQN and called Paul all the nasty names under the sun. I was copied in and asked Paul what this was all about and why he wasn’t responding. He said that it was helping.

Patience of a flaming saint I said.

On the numbers on CQN – they are continuing to grow. Maybe that will surprise people given the current discontent. Over 105,000 people have logged into CQN in the last 30 days. On the CQN Mag Facebook page the reach went over 200,000 recently ( for a week) and had over 25,000 people engaged. Mostly different folk from on here.

Of course many Celtic supporters have passed through CQN and no longer post. It would be great if some of these veterans – who are probably lurking – could step back in and post.

Like Celtic we should be prepared to defend and protect CQN for Celtic supporters of the future.

Unacceptable posts should be flagged up and can be dealt with but essential a unique feature of the blog is it has no moderators setting agendas. It has worked for over a decade so why not now?

Now do I need a brolly for East Kilbride?

  20. Good morning battered bunnet. Just back from an excellent two week break with my family. Had little wifi access so couldn’t bother you all.

In response to your athletico point. I am unaware that athletico had financial problems. Perhaps their strategy was to have a proper tilt at the league and CL and then rein in the finances? That’s a legitimate strategy. Risky but legitimate.

If as you say they are in a financial mess then of course they should sell players etc.

If your intent is to compare this with celtic in an attempt to ridicule those questioning the board then I believe your argument is flawed.

Celtic are in rude financial health and have been so for some time. Yet celtic continue to sell their best players at every opportunity.

This is despite the fact we can afford to keep them and despite the club telling us we will improve every transfer window.

To what end are celtic doing this? What’s the point?

I see that celtic did nothing as yet in terms of buying new players (please don’t even pretend CG is a new player). This is despite getting a new manager who you would think would want to bring in some players. I believe Lennon left because of the boards so called strategy which never allowed him to build a team. I challenge all if you to categorically tell me thats not true(I have it from a number of sources).

It strikes me that Ronny is a board plaything. He has no power.

I watched the celtic game last week in a cornish pub. Scaring the locals with my mounting anger. Celtic were very poor considering the level of opposition. We still haven’t sorted the striking problems we have and seem to have no ambition in that regard.

Celtic continue to stay silent on the rangers situation and treat the support appallingly. The latest for me is this murrayfield carry on. Tell me do celtic intend to play a friendly or two later in the season on the season book or have we just been conned out of another game?

Celtic have no strategy other that not make money and wait for the return of the Hun.

“The board used to be – on non Celtic nights- about eccentrics (no names) airing our eccentric political views/suspect musical taste/opinions on quality Scottish offal/genuinely amusing, informative and erudite take on history/movies/women/agriculture. Not so much now. Time to move away or time to reclaim?”

I said that we can only fight our corner against the trolls,to watch the blog being ruined while doing nothing is not an option.

Obviously he is far from unique in this, and I made a similar point overnight to FANADPATRIOT.

I agree entirely with PAUL67 on how he operates the site. It is an overwhelming force for good,a vehicle which largely-!-unites us,and one which also permits us to vent off occasionally about various subjects. As in the excerpt from the mail which I referenced.

But it should be primarily a site to discuss Celtic. Good or bad. There are indeed some posters whose contribution to such discussions is a big fat sod all.

Still preferable to the days of Super Sammys knee, and various others who came and went. But I think I’d rather have a hun on here than a troll.

Winning Captains. CQN is an open forum and that allows anyone to post it cannot be selective about who is allowed to post and who isnt.Taking that into consideration it then becomes clear that you are going to get all types of opinions posted from many different types of people many of whom you may not agree with that is what happens when we share our opinions. Now looking back at the so called good old days is just another human reaction but were they really any different ? having posted on CQN over many years under various names I can remember many heated arguements and people storming off never to return.Life itself is ever changing and as such CQN is ever changing as are peoples opinions.H.H.
