On Friday, after the Sparta debacle, I predicted, “There is worse to come”, it did not take long. Losing at home by two goals to Ross County is worse than losing by three goals away to Sparta Prague. If you were surprised, you have not been paying attention, Ross County were a punter’s dream. Celtic are dysfunctional, vulnerable to anyone prepared to put their bodies in the way and take their chance at corner kicks.
The biggest concern I have is the message the players get from persistently overhauling roles and tactics; going from four at the back, to three, to four and back to three. Add to this how Christie and Elyounoussi play a variety of roles: wide, middle, off the striker, and we shuffle between one and two up front.
If you are a player, you interpret this as, “We have no faith in our plan and we don’t know what to do about it.” At least in this respect, the manager, players, you and me all believe the same thing.
When will it end? Soon, I hope. St Johnstone visit in six days and they are more potent than Ross County.
Reports of missiles being thrown at our players outside Celtic Park yesterday evening beggars belief. Across the world, on a variety of issues, you see anger whipped up in online echo chambers. This has consequences: some bring that anger into their personal interactions, some gather to demonstrate.
A smaller percentage of them have no boundaries. Fuelled by the echo chamber and the crowd around them, they resort to violent acts, which Mr Angry behind his keyboard can condemn. The violence is a consequence of entitled anger and together they make it more difficult to resolve the situation. Imagine how you would react if you were a player?
A football team has come off the rails after winning a record 11 consecutive domestic trophies. For a club that has known so many hard times, it was a pitiful bookend to this historic period.

I think we are entitled to feel entitled. Two years ago our turnover was over £70m higher than theirs. Last December we had £40m in the bank. Sevco, throughout their short history have stumbled from crisis to crisis. A few months ago we were laughing at their Castore disaster.
Now look where we are. Sevco have the league cup in the bag. The gap in the league will almost certainly widen. They could win the league by over 20 points. We may not even finish second the way things are going. I can’t see anyone beating them in the Scottish cup so a treble is a real possibility. They will go further than us in Europe this season for the second season in a row.
The Celtic board has blown the enormous lead we had on and off the field. It didn’t take them long. This is incompetence of historic proportions. Lawwell should take a bow when Sevco claim to have won their 55th title. Sevco couldn’t have done it without him.

1. In his Review Mr Lawwell stated:
The dedication and sacrifices made by the support are fully understood by both your Board and myself and are not underestimated or taken for granted.
Can I ask what sacrifices, financial and otherwise, Board members are taking in these unprecedented times?
2. “Celtic: One Club, open to all”
This doesn’t appear to be applicable to the PLC Board. With the exception of a token female, all Board members are white males with 5 out of the 6 being over 60 years old (3 are over 70).
What does the Board intend doing to improve its diversity and inclusivity?
3. Earlier this year I was bombarded with both text messages and e-mails encouraging season ticket renewal. However, I did not receive one message informing me that I was entitled to a part refund of sums paid in respect of the aborted season 19/20. It appears that someone took the decision that it was best that the legal obligation to offer refunds would be best “camouflaged” in a News Notice on the Website.
While I fully understand the desire to restrict the level of refunds, I found the communication method to be underhand and frankly insulting to the supporters. I know a few supporters, including myself, who previously had no intention applying for a refund subsequently changed their minds as a consequence of the tactics employed.
Who took the decision to try and disguise the availability and entitlement of refunds?
4. What is the Board’s view on the optimum term a Chief Executive should be in post?
5. I note that the Chief Executive received emoluments totalling over £1.1m in the year to 30 June 2020 but did not receive a performance bonus. Under the terms of his Service Agreement, Mr Lawwell is entitled to a bonus not exceeding 20% of basic salary.
Can the Board please explain why Mr Lawwell did not receive a bonus.
6. Provision 19 of the Financial Reporting Council’s UK Corporate Governance Code states
The chair should not remain in post beyond nine years from the date of their first appointment to the board. To facilitate effective succession planning and the development of a diverse board, this period can be extended for a limited time, particularly in those cases where the chair was an existing non-executive director on appointment. A clear explanation should be provided.
The Chair, Ian P Bankier was appointed in June 2011 and by my calculations, his 9 year tenure expired in May 2020. I note from the Ordinary Resolutions that Mr Bankier is seeking reappointment although no “clear explanation is provided” for the Resolution.
In his comments the Chair states “I therefore have a responsibility to ensure the Group is following best practice in corporate governance appropriate to its size and nature, and in accordance with the regulatory framework that applies to AIM companies”.
Can the Board please explain why they are not adhering to provision 19 of the Code?

Well we are goosed.Makes it even more important to get the head coach appointment right and explore and interview who is out there.
With the behaviour of Rangers fans and the media I used to say I’d be relieved when 10 in a row was resolved *either way*. Now it’s not just Rangers fans. I have *nothing* in common with the people who ‘protested’ at Celtic Park. I’m fast getting to the point where I think that 10 in a row isn’t worth it. The price we’re paying is too high, let it go.
There’s little doubt that last night will become a super spreader event. Is the Celtic management position really worth people dying for? And second to that, people shouting in unison – ‘Lennon, get tae fuck’ – Really? Neil Lennon has had unprecedented abuse from opposition fans. Shameful abuse we should all be angry about. his reward from the Celtic ‘fans’ in the car park last night? Dog abuse. Vitriol. I understand that when you’re at a match it’s easy to get lost in the collective rage – but that wasn’t last night. Last night was calculated.
It also presents Celtic with a problem. Because whilst they may wish to change management, can they really be seen to give in to the mob? How does that work for a steady business plan when people know all it requires is 200 idiots in a car park to dictate future business decisions?
I used to joke that one day I’d sell my soul. And then I’d let them find out what they bought. Finding out the price of 10 in a row, I don’t think there’s a lot of pleasure in there any more.

I can’t fault the board for their financial backing of late. They may have gotten a fair bit wrong over the years, though we have spent more money than almost all the teams we have played domestically.

It’s been a while but like a comfort blanket I find myself looking for solace in the company of like minded individuals and my long absence from this fine blog is over. I’ve not read back prior to this recent article so I will probably cover old ground but I need to share my thoughts in some shape or form.
It’s said there are 5 phases of grief. I think our support have exhibited all of them in the past few months.
Denial
Anger
Bargaining
Depression
Acceptance
The denial started last season. The league cup final was a warning shot of massive significance. We were ill equipped out thought and but for inspired goalkeeping and sheer luck we were beaten. As one sided as a game can get and in years to come it will still remain a mystery how we managed to win that match. That same denial was in place at other points last season notably when beaten by Rangers (Sevco) and against a capable Ferencvaros. Still people were denying the obvious. We weren’t ready and hadn’t heeded prior warnings that the wheels could and unfortunately would come off the Celtic trophy juggernaught. The problem with a juggernaught apart from being difficult to spell correctly, if the wheels do come off it causes a catastrophic mess.
The anger probably didn’t fully kick in certainly for myself until the Rangers (Sevco) match when we were beaten at home without registering a single shot on target. In my humble opinion unacceptable for any Celtic side at home against any opposition. Throw is it’s your title rivals and city rivals it’s ultimately a disgrace. I was disappointed to go out of the CL but not angry. We were ill equipped and let’s be frank out of our depth in the CL. It’s not a season to look at throwing our full weight at a CL campaign. The performance was poor, the goals lost were embarrassing and the need to sort the defence was evident. The anger was boiling under the surface post Rangers (Sevco), it was fully bubbling over by the time a Sparta side who were thrown together to avoid forfeiting the fixture left Celtic Park with 3 points a devastating victory and the match ball in their possession. In my opinion that was the point when the board should have acted and relieved our manager of his duties.
However there was bargaining in play. Let’s look back at Ferencvaros. Our defence was less than shaky and more descriptively collapsing. We needed a pacey centre back who could win balls in the air. In steps Shane Duffy. Big Duffer had the pedigree most of us thought we needed. Myself included. He comes in and we batter goals in against Ross County he manages to bag a couple of goals in as many games and it’s game back on. Boli has been emptied. Players are getting fit. Things are looking better. Ferencvaros is now a blip. The club have credit in the bank. It’s no been a bad 9 years and the last 3 have been exceptional. We bargain it will continue and we can win the title and maybe add a few cups and have a run in Europe.
The depression starts to come down at Celtic Park when we completely submit to an average Rangers (Sevco) team. Depression doesn’t hit you like a juggernaught. It creeps up on you. It happens before you realise it’s even there. The penny starts to drop. The signings are not really the players we needed. The performances haven’t been good enough even when the results suggest otherwise. The league is not in our grasp. We are slipping behind. Aye, we haven’t had a lot of luck but when you start talking about a lack of luck it’s usually endemic of something else. You make your own luck.
The acceptance stage is amongst the support. Some of us are at the state of disbelief and the acceptance that this juggernaught of success could come to a crashing halt in the most unimaginable fashion. We are on the verge of relinquishing the treble to our city rivals. If you haven’t got there yet I would recommend you start to accept it is fully capable of happening. For others the acceptance phase is to act. There is nothing they can do sitting blogging at home or posting on social media or god forbid phoning radio stations.
So we are in various phases of grief. What comes next?
We need action.
A plan of action is what we need. It can’t come from the fans although I suspect it would be better to. We need an organised approach to achieve the goal this season which is to win the Scottish cup against Hearts and try and retain the league title.
How we go about that is anyone’s guess at the minute When the current manager was offered the role in the shower while holding the jackets for the Celtic board when the previous manager got tired of the set up and went in search of more money and a fan base that would put up with his egoistical behaviour while playing the football he enjoys watching whether it gets results or not.
Neil Lennon is an absolute legend of a human being (copyright Brendan Rodgers). The man has put up with more grief in his time at Celtic Park than any other Celtic employee in the history of the club. He deserves respect. The board should have allowed him that respect by removing him from the position after the Sparta home match. That was his 3rd strike in as many games. All at Celtic Park
Strike 1: Ferencvaros (After match comments)
Strike 2: Rangers (Sevco) zero shots on target
Strike 3: Sparta Prague (1-4 against a team thrown together)
Sometimes you have to take a bold decision. The media would have wailed and howled it was too early but it wasn’t. It was a 3rd into the season. We were losing points in the league. We were effectively out of Europe twice having played half our group games and the performances had been abject.
The board bottled it and let down a man who has given a lot to this club. He should have been protected and removed from the position.
He was in Ranieri territory at that stage. He had won the league with Leicester City and the following season bar results in Europe hadn’t gone well. The board at Leicester City removed him to protect him from himself. He was stumbling to relegation and his legacy was protected. The media thought it was harsh. It wasn’t. It was the right call and Lennon should have gone post Sparta Prague. It was clear then it was over. The players have chucked it in terms of playing for Neil Lennon. Usually you would have your team talk at these moments and say if you don’t want to play for me then at least play for them (the supporters) that element is gone this season.
I feel for Neil I really do. Nobody is more disappointed than me that it hasn’t worked but it’s not and he must go.
The solution is complicated though. My plan would be based on the following.
The backroom staff must go. I do agree with various bloggers and podcasters that the goalie coach and the doctors etc should remain.
We need an interim solution. Neil and his staff are not resigning so they will need to be sacked. In a season when money isn’t easily brought in the door that is going to be an unaccounted for cost.
We then need to bring someone in. Who do we turn to? More of that shortly. You won’t like it but it makes sense.
The CEO must go. You do not amass a mountain of CV’s for the most important job at a major company and throw them in the shredder before appointing the man you brought in to see out the last leg of a treble treble without even taking a peruse at them and even having a few conversations.
The bold Pedro flounced into the showers at Hampden and offered the job to a probably bemused Neil Lennon who probably expected a delay and process to be followed before being asked. The fact he couldn’t bring in his own men should have had Neil running for the hills but the pull of the club was too great and he may come to regret that his biggest error in management. So Lawwell has to go. He has done some great things in the role, some bad things and some awful things but his time is over.
We change the CEO probably at the end of the financial year it means a new man or woman in. That means a change of strategy and possibly structure. Do you appoint a full time long term manager now? I don’t think so that’s idiocy. That’s the same as appointing a former player and his rookie coach. Long term restructure and appointments take time and we now know we need that. Give yourselves 6 months and get it right.
In the meantime we have a cup to win and a league to at least challenge for. I what do we do? We need a coach, we need a manager who can come in and make changes.
Let’s consider the current problems.
Lack of fitness.
Players are taking weeks and in some cases months to get fit. In my opinion the players are not fit enough. We are losing late goals and conceding penalties. That’s in the main due to diving in. We are not a fit team.
Lack of formation.
What is our formation? Looks like players just chucked out to me.
Lack of shape – see formation.
Lack of game plan – see formation.
Lack of in game management. At Celtic Park v Rangers (Sevco) we could see at half time it wasn’t working. No changes at half time. Boom. Concede a cheap goal straight after. Changes are then made but it’s too late. Bad game management and that is just one of many examples. The worst though is the tactic of chucking Shane Duffy up front. Just stop that right now. Lose with some dignity not like a pub team looking for a pint bonus for scoring a goal. Remember that was another game we had 2 half fit strikers on the bench and another striker who was injured. Fitness again at play.
Team unity – the team just don’t look United and more over they just don’t look happy. They are on the verge of 4 trebles in a row and look as if someone has told them their money will be halved if they achieve it. There has been something seriously wrong for a long time. It’s clearly came to a head where they have chucked it. If they had anything about them they would have at least planted a rival or even each other by now.
What’s the solution?
You won’t like it.
I’ve spent 3 weeks thinking about it.

Collins as head coach. He will get the players fit. He knows the mentality of a top player. He knows the mentality of the French players and even speaks their language. His instinct is to play attacking possession football. He has supreme confidence in his ability. Remind you of anyone? He is a Scottish Brendan Rodgers.
Yogi assistant manager. Larger than life character to get these players bonding. Everyone of his teams are organised. Players know their roles and play great football. These teams are always greater than the sum of their parts.
Broony first team coach. Broony needs taken out of the side. This makes the transition easier than just dropping him. He knows the players and can do that Damien Duff role that is clearly needed with this group of players.
I knew you wouldn’t like it. Don’t shout at the screen I’ve spent weeks thinking about this and looking at all the elements and what we need and who we have and the money we probably have and the restructure ahead and the need to get someone in soon and…. ok it’s not ideal.
It’s where we are though due to the mismanagement of the club by the board from Brendan departing until now. It’s not going to be an easy transition and it’s not going to be an easy gig to get someone to take.

Right, you’ve not got much to work with. Your squad is disinterested. You are out of the league cup. Your teams form is poor. You are leaking goals and giving away penalties like a Santa in a department store and the fans will probably want to crucify you if it gets any worse. Good luck.

We need someone with that arrogance. We need someone with extreme self belief and confidence. We need someone available and we need them now.
Apologies for the long post I will probably slip back into obscurity but I had to get that down and once I read it back I may consider it rambling nonsense and come to my senses. Either way it is the final phase of grief for me. It’s action we require now and I just hope that we get it regardless of who comes in we need to turn this form around.

The Foxes job didnae materialize at the time so it was back tae the coal face for him and then word emerged that Rafa was being lined up but only at the end of the season as he believed in seeing it out with his then current club, that’s what decent people dae.
