  4. Saturdays game is a rare case of a worthwhile friendly.

They are not a dirty side but have excellent ball movement.

To stop them we need to have good shape and show patience.

    An excellent learning environment.

While McGregor, Armstrong & Brown to a lesser extent struggled to get a grip of the midfield or find a hooped jersey Bitton came on & controlled the game. He protects the ball better than most & finds a teammate with the majority of his passes. Yet for many this is a bad thing?

He made/makes a massive difference to us sadly some don’t or won’t ever see his worth.

    ==========================

I saw it. He was poor v the Gib Imps but tonight he was a bit of a rock. Ok a skinny rock, but his pass completion rate was much better than Armstrong and McGregor ,so we lost possession lest often which turned the game.

I was thinking after 5 minutes with NB on that 1-0 would be fine but to get a draw was a lot more than fine.

  8. Given we beat Astana over the two legs, I expect Rodgers will now persuade board to ‘overspend ‘ and get us players to at least see us through the CL group, or at least Europa cup after Christmas.

  9. Great result for Brendan and the Bhoys. Still some serious flaws defensively (fault of which lies firmly at the hands of Pedro el Bonus collector) but superb to see the effort from the players and finally a wee bit of tactical nous from the dug out.

I didn’t ever get the chance to see Wee Jinky live but I think I’m finally getting to see some of that character in the hoops for myself in the form of Paddy Roberts. Lost hope – no such thing. A bit of skill backed up with no fear of getting backing up after being banged down and running at the man once again. He’ll never be Wee Jinky but there is defo a fair wee bit of Jimmy in him.

  10. Great result , this Celtic side gets a tremendous amount of stick and not just by the alistair lamont’s of this world , so we should enjoy it and give them all the credit they can get

  11. I know I should know better , but my blood is boiling after reading some of the headlines on Newsnow Celtic.

One of them actually asking if it`s Celtic or Rodgers that is a fraud. stupidly I read it and tosser on the video did nothing but talk about the result in Gibralta being the worst in football history.

  12. Has been a dispiriting aspect of the last few years that the negative attitudes we hear day and daily from the SMSM media regarding any aspect of the club are transferred south of the border by our friends in Radio Shortbread doing reports for the rest of the Beeb.

We seem to be losing the — on the whole — fair minded reporting from south of the border as they seem now to rely more on locally sourced reports from our friends in the SMSM / SFA / Media Ludge who as always try to out do rasp have other on their ability to run us down.

And then you have the English press.

Another area where reporting has taken a more TFOD slant over the past few years.

Grauniad and the Torygraph appear particularly bad.

And then there is the rise of the locally sourced PA stuff.

My thoughts are that we need to make our own news.

Plus work every aspect of the club to support our national profile.

The Living Wage — real not kid on ShamCam version — would be a good place to start.

  14. Liam Henderson, better than Armstrong, I’m afraid he will not make it at Celtic, also McGregor, think them 2 should be loaned out,Brendan don’t waste Liam ,by letting him go to Hibs,

UEFA deadlines for registering players are :

    * 8 August 2016 (24.00CET) for all matches in the play-offs;

    * 1 September 2016 (24.00CET) for all further matches from the first match in the group stage

…so 12 days to add to our squad for upcoming ties

  16. Ray Singh-Carr on

Very professional result against a team that have a decent pedigree at home over the last couple of seasons. The job is not done yet but I am very confident that we will have too much for them back at CP. Rome wasn’t built in a day but we seem to be making steady progress which will do me for now.

  17. For the record I thought the game was a great advert for the poverty end of the CL.

They were a reasonable side who tried to play football after a poor start to the game.

We brought most of the class to the game but they were more effective.

The second half moved up a gear and it was end to end stuff.

Thought I heard the ball asking for a breather 70 minutes in as the tempo increased.

The YouTube highlights of PR’s performance will have quite a few hits over the next few weeks.

Consequently AL can talk tripe all he wants.

Good game, great result, good performance and all to play for.

If only BBC Shortbread had put up the money to show the game.

  18. PeterLatchfordsBelly on

A big well done to the bhoys in very difficult circumstances. Alien conditions on a horrible pitch against a good team well into their groove. Also with a decimated defence in our first properly competitive game of the season. I was encouraged that we got better as the match went on and that Brendan demonstrated his ability to make positive tactical substitutions. LG’s finish was unerring and Roberts deserved the assist for his overall threat. I also thought Efe and Young O’Connell did very well in adversity. Gordon needs to be more assertive on crosses, but redeemed himself with his shot stopping. Hopefully we can finish the job next week, but delighted with today.

“Our spacing is still an issue but will take time for coach to fix.”

I suppose it’s all about opinions but for me the biggest factor in this & always has been is our captain. How many successful midfield partnerships have we had with Brown in there? To me he lacks the discipline, ability & smarts to be an effective centre midfield player & was more productive for us when played wide right. But Brown is a whole other debate.

“I would sell and use the money to find an experienced central mid to be our conductor.”

Why sell when we already have plenty of money? I agree we need an experienced central midfielder but a defensive one. I think a Makalele type player would bring out the best in players like Nir & Rogic.

For me I’d be building my team around these guys not pushing them out the door. H.H.

About Michael Stewart, as a TV or studio pundit, I’ve always found him to be a fair analyst, not caught up in the typical SMSM agendas. He calls it like he sees it and tends to be quite balanced. I regard him as the best around, although I don’t always agree with everything – all about opinions.

I actually find our own Celtic TV at times a bit OTT and dare I say amateurish, anything but balanced and hard to listen to at times. Mind you, there are loads a lot worse.

  21. Great result.

    TBH I feared the worst.

Well done Brendan and the Bhoys

I would sell Bitton ,Johansen and Rogic and use the money to find guile and players with.

    Bitton i do not rate.

Johansen and Rogic’s contracts are nearly up with both stalling on committing.

I want players with ambition and desire for Celtic.

Forrest also can probably go for same reason.

  25. Mad Mitch,

You dont half talk some dross about Broony.Take off your anti Broony blinkers, because you are sounding like a know fek all about football tube.

And you “Blow it out “yours.Last time I will acknowledge any of your crap.

  26. Turns out I am Nostradamus. Got the team, formation and score correct.

But I’m not getting carried away. We were the better team but they created the best chances.

Gordon, O’Connell, Tierney, Roberts. Joint motm. Griff one moment of class, that’s all it takes.

I see we are adopting the “stick some players up front” tactic when defending corners. How did that work out?

Defending corners is about not conceding goals. Bring back zonal marking with the full team in the box. It just works.

  27. AULDHEID

He was poor v Gib, I struggle to name a player who wasn’t?

As for the result, it sure was :)

  28. For those coming up/down/over for the Barcelona match the Spirit of 88 CSC are providing entertainment in the Irishtown House (10 minute walk from stadium) before and after the match.

The number 1 bus from O Connell Street (every twenty minutes) will leave you at the pub door while Landsdowne Road is the nearest Dart station (10 minute walk away). Traffic in Dublin city centre will be severely restricted because of Luas(tram) works. Further information here:

    http://www.aicsc.com/celtic-v-barcelona/

The AICSC will also be selling a badge at the gigs to mark the match.

  29. Did Broony do anything to deserve a booking ?

It looked like the ref booked him as he was the captain , making an example

  30. A very good result, let’s hope the players have learned the lessons from the last two qualifying campaigns and realize the hard work is still to be done

I still think it’s crazy we’re in July and being this stressed out about our season

  31. ELLBHOY,

I am a fan of Bitton. But he certainly doesn’t speed the game up. Way too often he does pass the ball backwards or sideways. Maybe it’s playing with Brown. I don’t know but it isn’t what is needed much of the time in the SPFL. Away in Europe, utterly invaluable, imo.

  32. Not posted in a while….

Delighted with the result. I was unable to watch it as at work but feared the worst at 1-0.

Great to read reports that BR had a way of changing the game – my main bugbear of Ronnie D.

Hopefully we can finish the job next week.
