Back to black for Celtic

592

19 years after last having money in the bank, all we needed was ‘Armageddon’ to allow Celtic to return to the black.

Despite a drop in income from domestic football turnover increased an incredible 47.7% to £75.82m thanks to participation in the Champions League, leaving a balance of £3.76m in the bank (after season ticket money arrived in) on 30 June 2013.

The profit for last season of £9.74m more than made up for the loss of £7.37m made when competing with others who were subsequently found to be unwilling (not just unable) to pay their bills.

This summer’s transfers were split between the financial year just reported and the current period, with a £9.66m investment in football personnel and £5.19m recouped from player disposal (clearly the Wanyama sale was post-year-end.

These figures are retrospective and would have read hollow if the club didn’t reach the Champions League again this season.  With that status achieved we are now in a remarkably strong position to continue to scout, recruit, develop talent and improve the playing squad.

More detailed analysis tomorrow.

You cannot have a growth agenda in football. Not as long as players wages swallow up any growth.

Look at Arsenal. All that income and no growth .

Its the nature of footballl. Live with it and enjoy it when it aint hurtin.

    I posed that question previously

It was suggested that there would be a penalty interest clause in the loan rendering early payment inappropriate and not cost effective

Ki was in the main the money coming in.

Regarding the quoted figure on players coming in / extending existing contracts the numbers look a bit padded to me. Another round of exceptional items may be on the cards.

    Summer = EA @ £1.5mill / FF @ £2mill+

    Couple of loan fees.

    Winter = TR @ £0.4mill?

    June = VvD @ £2.2 / 2.5mill / AB @ £1.5mill?

Consequently getting close to the £9mill+ figure in the accounts.

Of these the AB looks either inflated or poor value.

We still have not got to the bottom of the MB (2011) debacle.

How much did he cost and how much can we realistically expect to recoup?

Just like 2007 all over again.

PL really should spend his energies elsewhere.

  8. AH @ 21.11

That is just a lack of imagination, desire and ability.

There is not a growth agenda because the Irish Raj doesn’t want one.

    And PL can’t deliver one.

On the subject of a growth agenda, were you outside CP in 93/94 telling Wee Fergus not to bother? Did you lie in front of the diggers to stop them demolishing the Jungle? Did you write letters of complaint to the the GH telling all and sundry that we were just wasting our money?

John Clark was the first original Celtic ‘Libero’ IMHO no Italian sweeper came close.

He could take care of himself also, he was a European expert, who knew all of Celtic’s Euro rivals and was even consulted by a Mr J Stein.

  16. If this was Celtic it would fall on deaf ears in this One Nation.

Midweek kickoffs can draw smaller crowd

numbers than weekend matches, for various

reasons. One big issue is fans having to go to

the stadium after work, sometimes directly

    from their place of employment.

Spartak Moscow is trying to combat that

    problem ahead of Wednesday’s 6:15 p.m.

match against FC Krasnodar. A “memo” to

Moscow employers from head coach Valery

Karpin appeared on the Russian’s club’s

website on Monday, asking that fans of the

club be released from work early to allow

    them to attend the match.

In full, the memo reads (thanks to Google

    Translate and some common-sense

    modification):

    MEMORANDUM

I am the head coach of FC Spartak Moscow,

Karpin VG. I ask you let your employees

    ___________ attend the Spartak-

    Krasnodar match.

I hereby certify that the game between Spartak

and Krasnodar will take place on Sept. 25 at

18:15 at Lokomotiv Stadium, and that the

presence of every fan at the match is

    important to the team!

    Sincerely,

    Valery Karpin

The last sentence rings true: Spartak currently

sits on top of the Russian Premier League,

tied on 20 points with Zenit St. Petersburg

and crosstown rival CSKA Moscow, all with

identical records of six wins, two draws and

one loss. Krasnodar is in fifth place, on 15

    points.

  17. Mario Balotelli has been suspended for three

matches following his red card after the final

whistle in AC Milan’s 2-1 home defeat to

Napoli on Sunday, the Lega Serie A has

    announced.

The striker received a second yellow card for

protesting after the match at the San Siro was

over and his ban has been extended for

    “intimidating and insulting remarks” toward

    the referee over his dismissal.

The Italy international will now miss the game

    against Bologna, Sampdoria and, perhaps

    most crucially, Juventus.

    Milan can appeal the punishment.

Balotelli was heavily involved in the match

against Napoli, missing a penalty for the first

time in his career as Pepe Reina saved his

    spot-kick.

The former Manchester City frontman did

score late on with a fine curling effort, but it

was no more than a consolation.

The loss left Milan eight points behind leading

pair Napoli and Roma after only four games of

    the new season.

They’re absolutely right you know. They’ll throw that one at us every time we mention the European Cup. “Ah but – have you won the Ramsdens Cup? Division 3?”. We’ll have absolutely no come-back then…….

Oh sh-t,somebody come up with a rebuttal to this witty, incisive put down before I come face to face with one of them and he leaves me speechless.I wont sleep now.FFS.

  19. Turkeybhoy

    Agree 100%

I dread to think what the mood would have been had we not made the CL, and we were very, very close to not making it.

My point was, it’s the suits getting all the plaudits, and virtually no one is giving Lenny, his staff and the players any, without them, no CL football, no accounts in the black, and a future of doom and gloom.

I know some will say they are ot be applauded for giving Lenny the job, they gambled big time with that decision, and it paid off, they couldn’t afford a proven manager after their debacle with BTM, Lenny was a cheap option for them.

And I believe they are more surprised than the support is with his success.

Now, considering next years figures will top these ones by some margin, I am hopeful Lenny will be in a position to keep the squad together for a couple of seasons, and actually build on this season, without having his best players sold from under him.

But, it’s Celtic we are talking about, so you never know.
