Back to the Future, when Celtic needed a fan to write a big cheque

1060

It was Back to the Future on Saturday afternoon, listening to Aberdeen rescue a point against Dundee was more like 1985 than 2015.  TV highlights suggest Aberdeen pounded Dundee, but three excellent goals were enough for the visitors to set the stage for Celtic to return to the top of the league against Motherwell on Wednesday.

Aberdeen have been imperious in recent months.  Incredibly, apart from Dundee and Celtic, they have failed to keep a clean sheet only once (at drubbing at Hamilton) since September.  That’s title challenging form in any language.

This run is unlikely to endure as the vagaries of form and fortune catch them up, but it appears our long wait for a notional title rival looks to be over.  Which is good.

Any business with operating expenses in the region of £33m a year, which is £2.75m a month or just over £600k a week, that had to borrow £500k in the first week of the month in order to pay an unexpected tax bill of the same magnitude, will by now be in urgent need of funds to pay rates, other tax liabilities, electricity and gas (no matter how little they used on Friday), while wages day is approaching.  And remember, those gardens don’t ‘duty’ themselves.

Newco Rangers will need a loan, or to sell a player for cash, to avoid imminently slipping into insolvency.  If Dave King is confident about carrying shareholders at a March EGM, and has the resources, he should loan the club money to get them through the next two months, no strings attached.  A bit like John Keane did for Celtic in 1994.  With insolvency looming, Keane, currently a Celtic director, but at the time an agitator for boardroom change, wrote a seven figure cheque, no strings attached, to pay-down Celtic’s overdraft, as the Bank of Scotland threatened to call in administrators.

Anything less than this is playing into the hands of Mike Ashley.

CQN11 St Patrick’s Day Dinner Dance is on Friday 13 March, at the Kerrydale Suite, Celtic Park.  The focus of an excellent night’s entertainment will be funding the construction of a kitchen at Chibwata Primary School in Malawi, for Mary’s Meals.

After the poundland debacle on Friday evening there was a lot of positives for Scottish football over the weekend: lots of interest in the Aberdeen game with a big home crowd; Accies record attendance; the Celtic goals; St Mirren’s performance…not to mention wee Jay.

Why talk up our game though when you can regurgitate a negative story. I despair for our media.

  5. I couldn’t be a sports journalist. I just don’t have the football knowledge for it. I stupidly thought that a 2-0 win away from home against a team 2 places below in the league was better than a 3-3 draw at home to a team 7 places below.

Now I know better thanks to the headlines in today’s Herald:-

“Celtic win but don’t convince as Commons move row rumbles on”

“Don’s doubters silenced as hosts mount late comeback”

Ronny has a dilemma for Wednesday. Should he silence the doubters by allowing Motherwell a 3-1 lead before scoring 2 goals in the last 7 minutes (including 4 minutes of injury time) to snatch a draw or go for another unconvincing win by 2 clear goals?

  7. the glorious balance sheet on

I hope that John McGlynn is not on any Mossad watch lists as being European scout for Celtic will undoubtedly involve numerous trips to Israel to scout the latest Dudu Dahan projects.

Good news from Catman that we have bid for Armstrong at Dundee utd. I think he can be a really good attacking midfielder for us in the Stilian Petrov mould.

I’m not for one minute saying he could be as good as Petrov – that’s a big ask – but he would give us an attacking edge from midfield. I’ve always been impressed with the runs he makes and his composure in front of goal.

Of all the Utd prospects of the last couple of years Armstrong is definitely the one I’d push the boat out for. This would be a great time to sign him with the 2nd half of the season and the CL qualifiers in mind.

  8. the glorious balance sheet

I couldn’t agree more, this boy has some potential and is the type of player we have missed out on for a few years now, Was happy to hear Ronny saying tonight that the best Scottish players should be coming to us. I really hope this is a sign of a change in our transfer policy.

Glad to see some balance on the blog after the Heart of Midlothian owner’s statement.

Too many jumped on that bandwagon at the weekend.

Incidentally, some of you do know that under-soil heating is for ………well heating the ground and not to melt snow on the surface ?

He took the rovers to a Scottish cup semi. No mean feat.

I thought they had blown it after the draw with the dons in ky1 but they done them in the replay. Great run that year.

How good is he as a scout?? Time will tell.

    Big cup,

Properly maintained under-soil heating should keep the surface at 12-14 degrees. More than enough to melt that wee flurry on Friday :)

I too hope that Ronny’s recent comments signify a change in our signing policy.

I remember Armstrong scoring a cracking goal against us at Celtic Park last season from a very acute angle. It was the kind of finish I’ve only seen Cadete and Larsson pull off in the Scottish game in recent times. Deadly and ice cool.
