Baird’s Bar, Paul McStay and Anton. Brendan is home

654

If charm brought European success, Brendan Rodgers would have left Celtic Park with the Champions League trophy yesterday. After speaking to the media he sat down with a small number of fans and immediately bound himself to the group by quoting the vernacular of the Celtic Park of his youth.

He spoke about it all. Paul McStay was his favourite all time Celtic player, “when we were in trouble you always looked to Paul to do something”. There was a special place for Anton Rogan, “flying down the wing” but it was Tommy Burns who made the most durable impression on Brendan.

“He went to Mass every morning before training [at Reading]. Family and people were important to him. He told me all about managing Celtic”.

There was a glint in the eye when he recalled stops in Baird’s Bar on trips to Glasgow before heading to Celtic Park, and of recounting his trips for weeks afterwards. The thought crossed my mind that this was a guy who had just picked up keys to kingdom he dreamed of ruling.

There was a short sentence: “I was 39 when I went to Liverpool”. He didn’t need to elaborate. The Liverpool job came when Brendan was still young enough to be play. He’s sure he is a better manager now than then, although he was a pretty impressive manager to be able to land the Liverpool job when he was still a pup.

Several of you have noted that the pickup in season ticket sales will pay the reported multi-million pound salary Brendan will earn. That will pale into insignificance compared to the money his family spent in the Superstore yesterday. They are a very proud family.

He wants his teams to defend aggressively. The responsibility to develop players remains, but he noted that it takes the right experienced players to properly bring on young talent. Oh, and no one needed to tell him the importance of the last week in August.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advert fundraiser, the money is now in and fundraising closed.  The Guardian and Tribune De Geneve have been paid, and the balance will go to Mary’s Meals.

I was seven in May 1967. I only have a vague memory of watching the game, but my old boy kept telling us to sheeeeeeesht!!!

I live in the Highlands now, but we were in East Kilbride at the time. No big celebration in our street then. I was the only male kid in the street who went to St Brides ;)

Caveat! It Is a sad but true truth (eh?). Sometimes you need to have a wee moan to ensure that the powers that be at our beloved club do not forget their responsibilities and match the ambitions of the worldwide Celtic support.

Joey the Tim says he lied when he declared his allegiance to Celtic back in 2012.

We know you’re full anal waste, but you don’t fool us ya Fenian bassa!

A FENIAN bassa with a hun mentality that suddenly realized that the only way he could fulfill his dream of playing at Celtic Park was to pull on the Poundland Shirt.

I have however received renewal E- mails. Waited that long on the phone forgot to ask if that is normal.

To anybody else in the same position, watch the renewal date. I would expect that any going spare will be snapped up..

Guardian advert doesn’t go out until the weekend, I believe. Can someone clarify?

  12. 49 years ago today I was 16 going on 17. Remember nothing about the day leading up to the game itself, except that it was a lovely Holiday of Obligation, Corpus Christi. Of the game itself, I only really remember the euphoria at the end of the game, when I kissed the TV, something of which I have been occasionally reminded over the years.

    You can’t kid us Joey.

    25th May, 1967

My dad sitting with my baby sister ( 1 year and 9 days old) on his lap. A few of his buddies round to watch the game on a tiny wee black & white DER tele.

My brother and I playing on the floor with wee motors, james bond car chasing a wee dinky Hillman Imp. Nae contest, but remember being told repeatedly that James Bond motors were top of the range and didn’t make any vrrrrerrrrrrmmmmmmmm NOISE!!!

My younger brother asking if Hillman Imps make a noise?

    Gales of laughter.

My mum had made ‘herself scarce’, a cracking wee line she used often when were under her feet. ” go and make yourselves scarce..” To let the men watch the game in peace…Aye, with a baby and two mad toddlers…

I probably lost interest after the teams came out and Bond did have a few missions to complete ( now with acme muffler firmly attached)

It’s an old cliche, but nevertheless true, my wee sister was tossed into the air at least twice that night… Mother had appeared by the sounds of the equaliser and I remember her shrieks as sis went into orbit.

Never did her any harm and now spends half her life in the air travelling with her job.

Remember going out to play after the game and the streets packed with weans and adults playing fitba on the grass in the middle of the cul- de- sac ….everyone wanted to be Tommy Gemmell… I was happy to be Bobby Lennox.

Don’t think the ‘street lights’ rule applied that night.

A new era and new rules.

God Bless Jock, Sean and ALL the Lions, for making so many folk very, very happy!

I’d bump ToadyDonnelly from your time – loyal to the cause in a Peter Grant kind of way (always pointing but never wrong). He’d only pass to those he liked on his team which would likely leave a pass back to keeper or sideways to Auldheid and that’s it. Would be sent off most weeks for resorting to abuse of officials or start a fight with his own team mates. Unable to control his emotions. Plus he can only make home games.

    His replacement.

HamiltonTim – Very Celtic TRUSTworthy. Able to read the game and make the intelligent passes with required the temperament and aggression. Always available for the pass and knows exactly the strengths and weaknesses of his own team and the opposition. The Paul McStay captain of the team.

I watched the game in 1967 with my brother and my Da in Coatbridge on a beautiful, sunny Thursday. 5pm kick off as I remember. My two sisters were also in the room (at least for the first seven minutes). As soon as Inter scored their penalty they started their mantra, “I knew it. I injustice knew it. We’d lose!” They were then summarily ejected not just from the room but from the house without keys to get back inside. They both stood on the landing outside and the three males returned to the main business of the evening, roaring with laughter because we saw that on the landings of every house in the street stood the females of each house in the street leaning with their arms resting on the walls.

When Big Tommy equalised we went mental. My Da jumped so high he banged his head on the ceiling light shade. We willed the Celtic players forward. Starting was performing miracles. Kenneth Wolstenholme wanted us to win. He spoke of a Celtic supporter who told him, “You can tell them we annihilated them one-one.”

Stevie then scores and not only us but every Tim house in the street (a lot) went ballistic. When the final whistle sounded we read mitred the sisters and dispatched them to make the tea. My big brother headed ‘up the Brig’ to the pub to celebrate with his mates. I stayed with my Da and headed out later.mThe whole town was jumping. There was a mental game of football going on outside St. Patrick’s Church on the Main Street involving about 3000 people and it looked as if our Littlewoods coupons had come up. It was absolutely amazing. I am certain that it will happen again.

Exactly 49 years ago I was on my first plane flight. Heading to Lisbon. I will never forget that day. As you may have seen on an earlier CQN article i am keen to get down in print the tales of those who were there as well as those with tales of family who were there and even those who stayed home to watch. There have been a few memories already posted in this thread but i think it is important we get them down before time takes its toll. Anyone who has any memories, stories please contact me on mick.maher67@vodafone.co.nz Hopefully as we enter the 50th season since that glorious one there will be a few more occasions that we can re-live in later years. Thanks
