Baird’s Bar, Paul McStay and Anton. Brendan is home

654

If charm brought European success, Brendan Rodgers would have left Celtic Park with the Champions League trophy yesterday. After speaking to the media he sat down with a small number of fans and immediately bound himself to the group by quoting the vernacular of the Celtic Park of his youth.

He spoke about it all. Paul McStay was his favourite all time Celtic player, “when we were in trouble you always looked to Paul to do something”. There was a special place for Anton Rogan, “flying down the wing” but it was Tommy Burns who made the most durable impression on Brendan.

“He went to Mass every morning before training [at Reading]. Family and people were important to him. He told me all about managing Celtic”.

There was a glint in the eye when he recalled stops in Baird’s Bar on trips to Glasgow before heading to Celtic Park, and of recounting his trips for weeks afterwards. The thought crossed my mind that this was a guy who had just picked up keys to kingdom he dreamed of ruling.

There was a short sentence: “I was 39 when I went to Liverpool”. He didn’t need to elaborate. The Liverpool job came when Brendan was still young enough to be play. He’s sure he is a better manager now than then, although he was a pretty impressive manager to be able to land the Liverpool job when he was still a pup.

Several of you have noted that the pickup in season ticket sales will pay the reported multi-million pound salary Brendan will earn. That will pale into insignificance compared to the money his family spent in the Superstore yesterday. They are a very proud family.

He wants his teams to defend aggressively. The responsibility to develop players remains, but he noted that it takes the right experienced players to properly bring on young talent. Oh, and no one needed to tell him the importance of the last week in August.

Thank you to everyone who contributed to the newspaper advert fundraiser, the money is now in and fundraising closed.  The Guardian and Tribune De Geneve have been paid, and the balance will go to Mary’s Meals.

    On this day 49 years ago I was watching the game on the black and white television in the house with my father-in-law who wasn’t much interested in football , with BMCUWP wandering about and my wife and younger child out for a walk. Since I was a ‘ low paid Civil Servant ‘ the idea of even going to Lisbon never entered my head . However,my brother-in-law who was Irish( and an ex Commando), had never been to a Celtic game till I took him in 1964 when I came back from Germany(OHMS!) was away to the bloody final!!! Anyway suffice to say I went up to the pub (The Star Inn) and me and two others celebrated the victory. This was Kilwinning before the’Glasgow Overspill’ so there weren’t many of us about. It was a great night indeed and Old James my father-in-law came too ( a bit like myself now , he was 75 then,) as you might not get the chance to go oot for a drink again! My claim to fame then was I knew and played against Bobby Lennox!! BTW, being at games for longer than most others just means you are old. As long as you support the Celtic it matters not how long

    The 12th was a huge thing in the village. My abiding memory is recognising the biggest, fattest, most mocked village idiot proudly carrying the bible on a big cushion at the head of ‘the walk’. This individual spent his days between the pub and the bookies, I imagine the next time he is seen in church he’ll be the centre of attention again.

    I often heard rumblings that some of the ‘hardmen’ were going to ‘sort’ ma Da out………Never happened. Miner, steel worker then fireman till he retired. Caught him on the neighbours roof a couple of years ago fixing their TV arial, 80 last year with 2 new knees at 79. Colossus.

    What an added bonus that momentous day 49 years ago gave us.

    Along with 9iar, it planted a spark of of raging jealousy in the hearts of the unhygienic ones, which would grow into an almighty inferno which consumed them in an unsightly death.

    BMCUW,

    I have never called any Celtic supporter a hun, and I never will

    Where on earth do you get that from ?

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Sorry,bud. My reply was meant to convey that TD thinks that anyone who deviates from his slavish devotion of PL is a hun. And that is his stock-and only-response.
    Your response was in reply to a similar point from another poster. Equally,I would never call another Celtic supporter that. I know we have rarely sang from the same hymn-sheet over the years as a support,but we all have the same goal at the end of it.
  11. 25th. May 1967?
    We had just settled down to watch the game when …ffzzzzzzzzzz … the feckin’ tele went on the bust. Cue mad scramble out the door (I didn’t know until that evening that my dad could move faster than me, a 16 year old stripling) and we landed in the Ryan’s house up the road in Woodlands, the better part of Bothwell, just across from the house wherein lived a guy who would become the grandfather of future Celtic captain Stephen McManus).
    Anyway just settled then THAT penalty given, but the room, full of Tims, were bullish throughout. Directly across the street a wee wummin was scrubbing her front steps and she was in my line of sight when big Tam scored and the roar went up, in the house and all along the street. Wee wummin jumps with fright, grabs brush, kneeler and pail and disappears round the back of the house sharpish. Still giggle at that!
    Try a Hootenanny,bud. Once we get the initial stuff out the way,it’s like the readings at the chapel.
    So next time there’s raging aggro debate on CQN – practically every day last season – the names can be pasted for reference. We can call it the ‘Shut Up Ya Rambling Auld Bastard and Drink Yer Horlicks’ list.
    Tins of beer that you had to make two holes in to get the beer oot and big screw taps as well:))
