Balance shifted to runners unconvincing with the ball

490

After so much slow build-up play this season, and so many misplaced passes, the sight of Roberts, Christie, Allan and Griffiths pinging the ball around the field was a revelation. I know the game was won before the three substitutes grabbed hold of things, and that there are vastly more challenging scenarios than Inverness at home, but the new blood have asked a big question of the incumbent three attacking midfielders.

The comfort on the ball the three substitutes brought was also contagious, Lustig looked less like a panicked fawn as he confidently back-heeled the ball into space.

The balance in the team has shifted damagingly in favour of players who can run, or perhaps jump, but who are unconvincing with the ball at their feet. So much so, Craig Gordon clears the ball up the field, instead of playing-in Bitton or a central defender, more than we’ve seen from a Celtic keeper in decades.

Christie, Roberts and Allan will not change this overnight (the latter’s misplaced pass against Ajax was costly), but they are doing enough to justify some faith in their selection. New Douglas Park should be an ideal opportunity to strut their stuff.

James Forrest is a hugely frustrating player, however in European games when there is a bit more space he has been the only one since Sammi left to have the pace to break and give the defence a breather. That said in SFPL games he doesn’t show enough, good enough for a four year deal?, on balance id say no. Genuine pace is priceless but worthless on the treatment bench.

And I’ve been a supporter of him in pub arguments.

    Of course they will.

They are a phinominum, sounds about right, they are the only club to get liquidated and still be the same club, the rules will be broken for them, the courts will accommodate them, they will be protected come what may.

  6. my auld man who is 70 overheard some aulder guy saying at half-time on Saturday “I’ve been coming here since 1948 and that’s the worst Celtic team I’ve seen”. My auldman, obviously disagreeing, looked at him and said “1948 ? Should you no be in a home ?” but moreover added “I’ve been coming on and off since I was a wee boy and that’s the worst Celtic Support I have ever seen”. Clamped as they used to say. A few of my mates agree and having witnessed some of the crap on here towards JF, its not far off the mark.

  7. Macjay1 ah there are a few sacred cows in your post.

Ulster part of Ireland. Well I know what we would like but legally it isn’t. As for definitions I am afraid Scotland has so,clouded words like sectarian and bigotry to render them meaningless. So it’s racism.

I am pretty sure that the debate over RITG is not a none the blog wishes to revisit. To repeat is think it is moronic. But it is not sectarian. We have simply been conditioned to believe that protesting against the racism makes us as bad as the racists. That’s just a sign of institutional racism.

And that is the uncomfortable truth. And it is uncomfortable isn’t it? But it is the truth.

  10. Just catching up.

Initial reaction was one of surprise that someone,( obviously not a game attendee ) had offered James Forrest a 4 year Contract, are we kidding, do we have money to waste, what was the plan to start developing a 24 yr old, who after 187 appearances still looks like the apprentice in the Team.

Even more surprising was his rejection of same, what conceit from a person, who based on contribution, should have been delighted not to have been punted.

Celtic should now remove any offer from the table.

Think it was the thistle game. .. we were really struggling. .. ball given to forrest just inside theor half …. he turns and gives it to young keiron who makes a run at the defence .

Typical of the 24 year old forward to pass the responsibility for attacking to the 18 year old novice left back

If you’ve been offered a new contract grab it with both hands , whatever it is.

You’re lucky to be offered anything. Apart from the winner against Karagandy I don’t think you’ve turned a game for us in all your time here. Being able to run fast doesn’t make you a footballer.

Hate to burst your bubble but James has rejected the offer of a 4 yr contract. I think that counts as him rejecting us. Given his injury record I opined that the offer of a 4 yr deal was generous in the extreme.

What part of that would you disagree with or do you think that his recent contributions merit a new deal. I don’t think any of the commentary on this from people who pay his wages as out of order.

  26. I wanted James Forrest to become a celtic great…but quite frankly he is not gallus enough. Way too many times i watched Jamesy glide past opponents only to see his cross fly out for a shy or by kick. Too many times he created space and let rip a shot which didn’t challenge the keeper. You see, JF lacked conviction. He hoped his shots would go in, he hoped his crosses would find a celt. This is the difference between an average pro and a top quality international player.

From what I’ve seen of Roberts , he beats his man and is already thinking with ice cold calmness, how to make this situation effective – shoot or pass. he does it with conviction and he does it with an arrogance that i think all wingers need.

GMS has purpose – i like how to puts his laces through the ball when shooting (unlike mcgeady and forrest) – it drives me nuts :)

good luck Jamesy, i hope you find a team that hits on the break and provides plenty space for your to exploit. Otherwise you’ll be sub , injured , one club after another and finally end up at aberdeen.
