Balde, Hooper, summer challenges

1119

13 June and Celtic have signed a striker!  Do we have some important games coming up early in the season?  6’4” Amido Balde joined Sporting Lisbon three years ago but never made an appearance for the club.

After three loan deals he joined Vitoria Guimaraes a year ago, where he caught the eye of Celtic scouts.  At 22-years-old, he is right in the sweet spot of Celtic’s recruitment strategy: fully developed physically, old enough to be considered prime first team material but with many years of prime football ahead.

Playing for Celtic is quite different than playing for Vitoria Guimaraes, so it may take Amido a period of adjustment to settle into life as a Glasgow sporting celebrity, but he is clearly the man Neil Lennon and the scouts wanted.  Based on that, I’m happy.

Despite what could be described as cover, and the fact that the player has declined a new contract, I’m still not happy to sell Gary Hooper.  We have lots to do this summer before that moves up the agenda.

Welcome to Celtic, Amido.

The raffle for a signed Celtic top in aid of 1254125 ends early tomorrow morning. THIS IS THE LAST CALL FOR TICKETS, which cost only £1 each. Get in there…..

  2. Can I ask a favour please?

Willie Wallace Heart of a Lion is selling really well on the blog, at Waterstones and at the Celtic stores. As you all know we have been working hard on this, the first ever book from CQN.

Anyway we have not persuaded the buyer at WH Smith to order it yet and we really want to get Willie’s book into their shops. If you go in you will see they have all the recent books on Scottish football – except Heart of a Lion.

So the favour is this – if you are passing a WH Smith over the next week or so could you ask if they have Heart of a Lion by Willie Wallace? They wont have it so you can express your disappointment etc – hopefully the interest will filter back to London…

  3. On the subject of OO walks.

My dads auntie who was a total character and Celtic daft was in Glasgow City Centre in the 60’s or 70’s. She got to the middle of Sauchiehall Street and the walk was coming down and they were told to wait until they have to cross the street. Whilst standing there a guy joined her at the crossing in a rather fetching royal blue suit. He turned to her and said

‘Enjoying the walk hen? Here come the Scottish champions!’

    She replied saying

‘I need to get on my way got mass this evening’

His face was a picture apparently and as he observed the bands in full flight she burned a hole in his beautiful suit with her fag.

She must have had a few prayers to say at the next confessional. I would say it was worth it!

The Sons of the Somme (khak finish) is a sombre outfit given out by Boys Brigade leaders as part of a traditional boy-to-man ceremony, based on who won they game of sojurs at lazer quest. Please respect that dignity.

    Horsey bhoys.

Any thoughts news/tips/fancies on Ascot this week, fire them up on the thread previous to the current one please, (which today, is this one!) and I shall do likewise.

Wish I had booked some time off for the meeting but a tad busy at work so wasn’t to be.

Anyhow, the calm before the storm today with some mundane racing. I have a feeling Dalgliesh/Johnston who both use Joe Fanning may have a few between them at Carlisle today, so some small stake singles and combination bets to try and fill the Ascot tank without taking too much out of what’s already in it!

Been waiting on ante post betting for the Ribbesdale at Ascot Thursday. The lady who trains my nags is the sister of Sir Evelyn De Rothschild and when I first visited that stable she told me that Fallon told her brother that he thought Waila was possibly the best horse he had sat on. Now, if that were true then it would indeed be a vg horse indeed. Rated below many of the field for Thursday so I expect he might be a nice price and I’ll be looking to get on asap. Obviously an extremely competitive race but I cant ignore a comment like that, and if he is a nice price you don’t need to get in too deep to win a few quid.

He (Sir Evelyn) will have another out, Hillstar, which is currently declared for both the Hampton court stakes (Group3) and the King George VII stakes (Group 2) and it’ll be interesting to see in which one they run it. Its also declared in the John Smith cup at York in July. I will be able to get a bit more info on that one in a day or two and will pass on anything I hear about their thoughts on it’s chances.

Any thoughts from the horsey bhoys for this week??

  8. Green Lantern (((((0))))) on

twists n turns.Very interesting comment from KF re Waila. She hasn’t run since April but is by Notnowcato and ought to get the trip.

Has she been saved for this?

Fallon writes a column in the Weekender which covers racing up to the Tuesday of each week. He has therefore not mentioned anything from this Wed onwards, but if he does give a shout to Waila in the next issue the price will contract.

Stoute trains it which is another huge plus.

Definitely worth a punt, although I haven’t been able to find a price yet.

Fallon is very keen on Shea Shea in the Kings Stand, but I have a feeling that Reckless Abandon could be a star in the making.

More magumba later. Good to talk to another horsey man.

Am also very keen on The Fugue in the Prince of Wales Stakes, currently 7/1 with B365.

happy with that start. 9/2 for Joe Fanning. Another would be nice to catch a double and perhaps a few more combinations if a 3rd went in.

    Fingers crossed
