Balde, Hooper, summer challenges

1119

13 June and Celtic have signed a striker!  Do we have some important games coming up early in the season?  6’4” Amido Balde joined Sporting Lisbon three years ago but never made an appearance for the club.

After three loan deals he joined Vitoria Guimaraes a year ago, where he caught the eye of Celtic scouts.  At 22-years-old, he is right in the sweet spot of Celtic’s recruitment strategy: fully developed physically, old enough to be considered prime first team material but with many years of prime football ahead.

Playing for Celtic is quite different than playing for Vitoria Guimaraes, so it may take Amido a period of adjustment to settle into life as a Glasgow sporting celebrity, but he is clearly the man Neil Lennon and the scouts wanted.  Based on that, I’m happy.

Despite what could be described as cover, and the fact that the player has declined a new contract, I’m still not happy to sell Gary Hooper.  We have lots to do this summer before that moves up the agenda.

Welcome to Celtic, Amido.

The raffle for a signed Celtic top in aid of 1254125 ends early tomorrow morning. THIS IS THE LAST CALL FOR TICKETS, which cost only £1 each. Get in there…..

Rangers board pay ‘ludicrous’, says investor Prior

KIERAN Prior, the man who this week invested £400,000 in Rangers, has hit out at the “ludicrous” and “astonishing” sums being paid to members of the Ibrox board.

Executive pay at the Third Division champions is believed to total £1.5 million a year, a sum which has shocked City investor Prior. Prior singled out finance director Brian Stockbridge for criticism.

Prior told the Daily Record: “I find it astonishing a club in the Third Division has paid that amount of money to members of staff, including Mr Stockbridge.”

He added: “He is earning in excess of £200,000, which is overvaluing your FD – and when bonuses match your salary, that seems ludicrous.

“I can see the argument for a chief executive, but why the hell should a bonus be paid for winning the Third Division to the FD?”

Bonuses for Stockbridge and former chief executive Charles Green are thought to total over £500,000, and Prior told the Record that a clearout of Green’s former colleagues may be necessary.

He said: “The current board seems a very legacy-ridden, Charles Green affair. That’s not to say Charles Green didn’t do some good things, but we need to move forward.”

Prior bought a £400,000 stake in the Ibrox club earlier this week, which received more good news when it was revealed that their summer signings will be allowed to play as trialists.

The club had feared that their plan to circumvent their one-year transfer embargo would be thwarted after the SPL/SFL merger, but the combined body will not adopt the top-flight’s more stringent rules on trialists, allowing the likes of Jon Daly to play from the start of next season.

The club also announced plans for two new branches of the Rangers shop, in Belfast and at Glasgow Airport.

  4. A big big thank you to the organisers for ystr golf outing. Lots of people put in lots of time and I’m sure I’m not the only one who’d like to day thank you.

    Couple of snippets…

Paul, it was a pleasure to meet you, and your dad.

However, we had a smashing table with some first class characters, you know who you are, so a big thank you for making me feel welcome.

Midfield maestro, when you go to the bar after being told we’re drinking red, we really don’t need beers to go with it. Numpty. Hence the reason I’m delicate this morning.

A big thank you to whoever got me back to Glasgow in one piece, I’ve woke up in my own bed. Only God knows how.

Thanks once again, a thoroughly enjoyable day.

if there’s a rule that doesn’t suit – simple – change it – trialists in – bare faced corruption

The combined body already bending over backwards to help Sevco. Meet the new boss, same as the old boss.

  9. So, Sevco received “more good news when it was revealed that their summer signings will be allowed to play as trialists”.

It’s great news. A pathetic punishment for their gross crimes against football that they have ridden roughshod over, with the complete collusion of the MSM.

    Really great news.

SFTB submitted this for the latest issue of CQN Magazine but it arrived too late. Rather than leave it until after the summer when he’ll be back on the blog himself – thought you might enjoy reading it now.

aye sorry about that, but I still get an involuntary giggle when I get dug up about it, I think\hope you know it was aimed at lurkers there were quite a few twitching like kittens whiskers and I have zero doubt there would have been calls from hampden to UEFA to find out if it was true.

Again sorry pal but I still cant help laughing at scorn poured on me when everything turned out exactly as everyone originally expected.

That was something I have managed to never repeat, so maybe there is some self control in there I just need to harness. If we meet I’ll get a few rounds in to try and help wash away the bitter taste :o)

Enjoy your day at ‘The Lodge’.

  17. Did anyone doubt that “triallists” would be allowed to play in the new league? Did anyone doubt that rules allowing players with no employer a chance to impress would be used to play those who have already signed?

It says much for the, er managerial skills, of Mr McCoist that he so badly needs a bunch of SPL players in the second division. Craig Whyte had him sussed – simply a buffoon who helps sell this new club to the old fans.

  18. ACGR, people will be surprised to know you’re only 50. What with you’re knowledge of the stiff stuff..

  19. I read here the other day, BRTH telling us that golf is a good walk wasted. Having had mine interrupted nearly 100 times yesterday, I tend to agree. However sometimes it’s worth it. Sometimes you get to see things that will live with you forever. There are some awesome sights that you can only really imagine in your minds eye until you turn up in person to see for yourself at Aberdour. I am of course talking about Curly’s trousers and big Johnnybhoy’s legs.

Another magic day meeting new friends and having been to a few now, catching up with old ones. Then ye get to listen to Willie Wallace and what a privilege that is.

The boys who organise the CQN open are incredible.

Here’s too many more wasted walks if the craic is always as good as it was yeaterday.

  20. “We’re in a unique position at Rangers where we can grow the club and a stockpile of wealth so when we reach the pinnacle of the Scottish game again there is an opportunity to go straight back where we belong – at the top, nowhere else.

How do you stockpile wealth with no European money and the pittance Scottish clubs receive from TV?

This guy talking out his erse already.
