Balde, Hooper, summer challenges

1119

13 June and Celtic have signed a striker!  Do we have some important games coming up early in the season?  6’4” Amido Balde joined Sporting Lisbon three years ago but never made an appearance for the club.

After three loan deals he joined Vitoria Guimaraes a year ago, where he caught the eye of Celtic scouts.  At 22-years-old, he is right in the sweet spot of Celtic’s recruitment strategy: fully developed physically, old enough to be considered prime first team material but with many years of prime football ahead.

Playing for Celtic is quite different than playing for Vitoria Guimaraes, so it may take Amido a period of adjustment to settle into life as a Glasgow sporting celebrity, but he is clearly the man Neil Lennon and the scouts wanted.  Based on that, I’m happy.

Despite what could be described as cover, and the fact that the player has declined a new contract, I’m still not happy to sell Gary Hooper.  We have lots to do this summer before that moves up the agenda.

Welcome to Celtic, Amido.

The raffle for a signed Celtic top in aid of 1254125 ends early tomorrow morning. THIS IS THE LAST CALL FOR TICKETS, which cost only £1 each. Get in there…..

    Sympathy for Hearts?

After the thuggish assault on the bete noir of the hunnish hordes ,Lenny, at Tynecastle followed by the hugely predictable wee slap on the wrist from the Scottish judiciary, sympathy for Hearts may well be in short supply from my fellow , and much loved, Tims.

On the other hand,it should never be forgotten that the Hearts football team of 1914 marched down as one and signed up for service in what became the horror of WW1, with the local recruiting sergeant.

    Viz. The ” Pals regiments.”

The Heart of Midlothian are a Scottish footballing and literary institution.

Put aside the fact that some of their fans are bigoted .

I feel their loss would be a sad one.

I missed this yesterday, so for anyone else who did the same:

The newly formed SPFL have made their first concession towards Sevco by watering down their rules on trialists.

A draft of the rules and regulations for the merged SPL and SFL showed that no trialists would be eligible for league fixtures- following the workings of the SPL rather than the SFL.

However, just days after forming, the SPFL are about to do a u-turn on that ruling with the news leaked to Sevco friendly STV Sport- the preferred broadcaster of both Craig Whyte and Charles Green while they called the shots at Ibrox.

According to a report on their website: “STV understands that regulation has been amended for the final copy of the rules, which will come into effect when all 42 clubs unite under one umbrella later this month.

“The news will be of particular interest to Rangers who have agreed to sign a raft of new players when the club’s registration embargo ends on September 1.

“Manager Ally McCoist had intended to field Nicky Law, Nicky Clark, Jon Daly, Cammy Bell and Arnold Peralta as trialists in league games before that date, only for that to be cast into doubt.

“All five players will now be eligible to play in a maximum of three SPFL games prior to their registration on September 1, with Rangers allowed to name up to two of the players on their teamsheet for any given match.

“Trialists will not be allowed to play in top flight games in the new league but it is understood all clubs in the other three leagues can continue to field unregistered players until March 31 of the year in which the season ends.”

In a further boost to help the Third Division champions as they move up a division the report added: “The current SFL rule which places a limit upon the number of players aged over 21 in a club’s squad will not be included in the new SPFL regulations.”

It’s believed that the rule changes came about following discussions between David Longmuir, Neil Doncaster and Sandy Bryson.

Further talks are expected to explain how players who have signed lucrative long term contracts can be described as trialists.

I agree. Played on and off for 2 years on a Saturday, and then in January decided with a mate to set up a Thursday night game as well.

Squad of 14-16 for Saturday mornings which is run by the CQNer, Gordon, the master of Celtic knowledge who would easily beat SFTB (who also attempts to play on a Sat morn).

in the Friday night quiz. He cant bite on this one at the mo :-)

As mentioned we also play on a Thursday night and have around 16-18 players to call upon, but sometimes struggle to get the 10 due to work, injuries, old age etc.

Happy for you to join the Thursday night squad (which includes 3 zombies), but then you would be playing 2 days in a row.

“Further talks are expected on how to make up new rules to explain how we can let Sevco play their new players”

its only right those individuals are allowed to ply their trade within the dizzy heights of scottish footballs nether regions as soon as is possible,

why should we seek to deny them that, the earlier they play the sooner they will realise that their careers are dead, that they walk amongst the nation of zombies,

for some amongst that group they will soon realise the soup they choose to take will not provide any warmth on a cold day at the bigot dome when the bile pours down from the stands upon them.

I think that post by yer man earlier… I think he just screwed up on his login. He was a little the worse for God’s water last night/this morning, but his 125 endurance lost him more than eight kilo’s in weight, so he doesn’t indulge nearly as much as he used to because he has set himself a target of losing another eight. It is amazing what taking a wee sabbatical from the booze can do, not to mention what it did for his BP and cholesterol count.

If SFTB is in attendance at 5s this morning please tell him I loved his A-Z on all things CQN.

I know that this is close season and that even this sainted blog can become a whacky and wild place in the months of June and July. However, the posts that concerned me most over the past week were those that spoke of walking away from Scottish football or indeed turning their back on Celtic.

Now I’ve only spoken to a couple of people in the real world, face to face who are of this opinion but they are genuine, impassioned Tims with a great love for our club and as a consequence I have to assume that many, though not all, of the posters who express similar views on CQN are of the same ilk (yes I’m aware that I may be naive in this outlook!)

The anguish is obvious were they forced into this decision but it is borne out of either anger at the perceived lack of action against our south side, dying neighbours or alleged complicity by those in charge of our own club.

I’d like to point out a snippet from The Tommy Burns Story which was produced when Tommy was the manager at Parkhead and it has always stuck in my head.

Tommy was going to knock Celtic back when he was offered a contract as a young player. Thinking that he wouldn’t make it in the esteemed company which was at the club at that time, he thought it wiser to sign for either Everton or Leeds.

His father, who didn’t have a great influence on his footballing life pointed out to the young Tommy,

“This is Celtic you’re saying naw to. You sure you know whit yer doin?”

After a quick tour of the trophy room, the rest as they say is history.

    Indeed.

Sorry I’ve not been in touch recently but some important stuff has been going on. I was considering divorcing mrs twisty but was a bit concerned that she’d leave me financially ruined. However my hopes of hanging on to my wallet and pensions received a much welcome boost when my representative mr Mason Pinsent informed me that despite all of the money paid into her bank account over the years, face to face time, e mails, letters and phone calls that have happened, he can prove there was “no connection” between us.

  23. BT, sorry to hear about your loss, my condolences to you and your family.

    RIP Frank.

  24. Morning,

3,400 of the 3,750 tickets sold so far for the Brentford game have been bought by Celtic fans.
