Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

Some folks just love to complain, I’m not saying Oliver Burke is a Winger we can rely on but we all know – regardless of what you might say on here – that we don’t have one at the club right now- i.e a Winger we can rely on, the ones we have blow hot and cold ALL the time, and that’s me stating the bleedin obvious.

Went to Privacy on Settings and set Limit Ad Tracking to On.

Don’t know if that will help. Let’s see.

    Thanks again!

  7. Celtic will sign loan players, maybe spend a couple of million on 1 player, and to me that’s criminal coming from Desmond, and Lawell and co, I’ve said many times on here ,they 2 need to be replaced, with big changes on Recruitment, Scouts, etc,

  8. A wee bit of fluff from the Star Sixes today.

During a break they conducted a live quiz, asking 10 questions to Emile Heskey, representing England, and Lee McCulloch for the Scots.

Lee’s first question was “Which club was founded first- Celtic or Rangers?”

The bold Lee got it right. He said Celtic.

  9. Ref strike in the post- bring it on. Sleekit doesny begin to describe that mob. Can you be predictably sleekit? They’ll be wanting an apology next.

Read your earlier observation about the events in the tunnel prior to the Ibrox game.

In some companies that kind of remark invites accusations of paranoia. But sometimes it’s bang on the money.

Years ago TV footage of the Ibrox tunnel focused on McCoist going out of his way to shake a linesman’s hand. The thing which was unusual was the linesman’s reaction. He looked as if he had died and gone to heaven. Hero worship didn’t begin to explain it.

That same linesman (McBride) repaid McCoist in spades when he disallowed Jorge Cadete’s legitimate equaliser.

Celtic should stick to the simple facts that Beaton admits seeing Morelos incidents but did not punish contrary to the laws of the game.

Also the fact that a few players have faced retrospective punishment in spl this season due to the refs being unable to fulfill their remit.

In the Dolly Mensa incident Clancy gave a foul but then proceeded not to apply a suitable punishment for said offense.

There is plenty evidence of ineptitude by refs to have the system changed if we pursue the cheating angle it will allow the authorities to deflect the issue and maintain the present corrupt system.

  14. Fan a tic- O’Dea got a 2 game ban, when ref seen incident and sent off Livvy player….

  15. FRITZSONG @ 4:47 PM,

Yes, know exactly what you mean… Beaton was in his element, his body language is shouting out. When Celtic appear he changes completely.

If some give Beaton the benefit of the doubt and I don’t, he seemed overwhelmed by the occasion.

Fanboys shouldn’t be put in this situation.

We need properly trained (preferably abroad,), fulltime officials supported with VAR technology.

    Hail Hail

  16. BADA BING

And this is what we have to focus on not just incidents with Celtic.

Hopefully refs will strike and spl will bring in refs from elsewhere to draw attention to the situation and expose the sfa to a wider audience.

As i stated we have to box clever so as not to allow the authorities and mssm do not try to make it a simple paranoia timmy thing which has always been their tactic.

There are plenty of incidences where other teams have complained about the officiating this season about which the authorities and mssm stayed mute except in giving credence to one new club.

  17. Fan a tic- the Club must follow up the statement, let us know what was said at the meeting, but i have my doubts…

  18. Many of Scotland’s referees are cheats.

The few others who remain are largely woefully incompetent.

Delighted with the events unfolding since Celtic’s statement.

    Read Maxwell’s comments carefully.

    Threats against Beaton confirmed.

Threats in other case mentioned are alleged.

When actual assault took place – SILENCE.

The tone and timing say everything about who has the power at the SFA. Not the CEO.

BTW – statement released at 2:20pm and picked up an hour later (on a weekend during the shutdown) by Sky.

    Sharp journalism? Cobblers

SFA Communications Officer tipped them off.

    Over to you Celtic.

Can’t see Burke coming in to replace an outgoing Sinclair . Why replace a signed player with a 6 month loanee unless there’s an option to buy. Not that I’d disagree with moving Sinclair on , but I’d like to see Morgan being given a chance.

  21. Has Defoe actually signed for Sevco yet?

Cos I’m hearing he prefers a move to Palace

  22. Welcome to Celtic Ollie – I think he will do fine. He is faster than anything we got at the minute – can run at 35km/h. and he is quite a unit too – hopefully not a fierty like our current right winger. should destroy Halliday next time out.

  23. Fool Time Whistle on

    Fan-a-tic

    I agree.

An original refereeing scheme that was found to be inadequate because of inconsistent, (even within the one game) incompetent & not transparent.

An addition to that system which was intended to adjudicate retrospectively on incidents that referees failed to notice in the hurly burly of games, has now become a system that allows referees to escape responsibility for their inadequacies & incompetences doing what they are paid to do.

That Video Review Panel has been a useless “show pony” for the SFA so as to allow the continuance of the Zero Comment policy for officials regardless of the seriousness of the implications. An apparent contribution to transparency is actually another layer of bureacracy which really obstructs.

The secrecy surrounding the Video Review Panel’s members & their terms of reference are a testamnet to the real purpose of that group.

To avoid being accused of incompetency & possible bias, Beaton saw his opportuinty wiuthin the known rules of the Video Review Panel. If he had said he missed them altogether, his competency was seriously in doubt, so he chose to say he saw them – and deemed them to be of no consequence at all, chooisng to neither speak woth the player, his captain of his coach – nor to issue any cautions to the player.

He knew that by saying he’d seen & dismissed the incidents then the VRP could not second guess him professionally & instead he chose to hide behind the old excuse of “if in the ipinion of the referee”.

His competency & honesty are now though in tatters.

We cannot know for sure, but can genuinely suspect that he became aware of the controversy over his performance regarding Morelos very quickly after the end of the game. This afforded him ample opportunity to decide what option to choose. Rather like Dougiegate, he chose what he saw as the least damaging option for him – with little thought to how that would play out for others.

This whole situation would, in any real world of honesty, accountability & transparency, result in an independent review with binding conclusions on all parties.

Instead, some fans of other clubs have gleefully enjoyed Celtic being beaten and ignored the real implications of this affair. Graham Spiers is an otable example of someone who likes to present himself as a reasonable man, but he has been exposed over this as nothing of the sort.

If these egergious assaults are allowed to be dismissed as part of the O** F*** distortions, then NO FAN of ANY OTHER CLUB can ever complain about any refereeing decision – no matter how odious or wrong.

It will also impact upon the play, tactics & performance of the Scotland international sides & on Club sides playing in Europe. Scotland’s unique interpretation of rules & cloak of secrecy over referees being accounatble does not and will not apply beyond our borders.

The system is broken & has been broken for many years.

Rather like the Cultural Revolution in Mao’s China, those in real contorl of the game are attempting to give the appearance of change by shuffling things around at a level beneath their lofty perch.

The smug, sneering dismissal of any need for root and branch change after a full & open independent review is two fingers to us, to our club and to those others who know that the system is badly broken.

We have been here before as a club & a support – many times. We have become stronger after each fo them as we refuse to go away or be downtrodden. We will prevail – eventually.

In the meantime, the club has do much more to influence how the game is run & how it can possibly allow such thuggery & brutality in our game to exist with impunity & worse – a shrug of their official shoulders.

Celtic do your best on the field & in the corridors of power, but remember who you represent & who your real customers are.

    HH

  24. Threats against match officials?

A linesman was hit with a coin at Livingston in September, he bled, and the SFA said feck all. But now a statement.

    Corrupt to the core.

  25. The huns inferred Collum was a cheat, and an RC cheat, no big statements or debates by the ‘experts’….

  26. No they haven’t closed off the Defoe deal yet . But they have signed a better one from killie. Filling the team with blue noses who would play till they drop for them . We have too many wants , because of no action at the start of the season , the quality needed to repair our team has no chance of being bought this window , don’t know anything about the guy kamara except he can stick the boot in , Jones hands up who didn’t think he would end up at them . We have deficiencies in our team , that every other spfl outfit know about , and act on as we witnessed against hearts hibs and them . It’s going to be a squeaky bum second half of the season .

  27. BANKIEBHOY1 on 5TH JANUARY 2019 6:17 PM

Jones and Kamara are not huns till next seaso

Both pre-contracts. Would imagine they will try and sign one or both with offers late in this window.

  28. It wasnt that long ago Celtic were linked to darren bent, james mcfadden, emile heskey, and wes brown all playing tonight in the 6 a sides
