Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

  1. Now welcome Olly Burke ?

Maybe just me, but Celtic are most certainly focussing on Scottish, dare I say British players for the squad – is there potential issues with squads post Brexit ????

Like a few have stated, I also feel our squad is often physically and in stature weak (small in size)

So this area needs addressing ?

    Right back

    2 * Centre Halfs

    2 * Centre Forwards

    Needed

    Oh

And I would like Big Victor ( at either CH or defensive midfield)

I read Clyne going to Bournemouth

    Hi Bhoys

    Burke in/Sinclair out?

    KEEP THE FAITH

    ??

Much as though I warm to his off the field persona and want him to succeed……who would buy him on the form of last current and previous season?

    HH jg

  3. David66 @ 12.22

Why do you hope that Celtic spend those specific sums? I personally don;t think that the more we spend he better we get necessarily applies in every case? Personally I’d also like a ‘ready to play’ right back, goalscorer and midfield enforcer. But whether they come at a combined cost of £5M or £25M doesn’t really bother me. There’s a danger that some people confuse price and value. Larsson and Lubo for less than £1M….

  4. Wilkommen Burkie Bhoy…….

I hear you used to play for Scotland!

Time to get those caps mounted and framed, eh?

  5. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ JOBO BALDIE on 5TH JANUARY 2019 12:38 PM

For every Larrson and Lubo, there are 100s of players like Compper/Gamoba/Hayes/Hendry/David Fernandez/Adam Virgo etc who are purchased for a low fee.

While there are exceptions to the rule of course (players who do not live up to their fee/bubbles in a market (EPL)), it’s an accepted principle that spending more money gets you a better class of player.

I don’t think Celtic need to spend £8/9/10m per player, but I think they should move away from spending £1m or so for a player, as too often the quality isn’t there and we are wasting transfer fees and wages.

  6. Hi JG

Iwasn’t really aking about selling him just if that was maybe a consideration or letting him go just to reduce the wage bill. Or maybe even a shot across Scott’s bows to get the finger out.

    KEEP THE FAITH

  7. I maybe a cynic

How does/did the media get a hold of info relating to a referee reporting text messages to the police ?

If I reported something to the police, how would that get into the public domain ?

    No need to answer

  8. So, Burke in on loan until the end of the season only, with no option of a permanent deal thereafter (on his recent record why would we want him anyway?). Even if he is replacing a departing Sinclair, we’re still worse off come the summer.

Given the situations regarding other players, including the prospect that one of the big guns could make an offer at the end of the season that neither Celtic not Kieran Tierney can refuse, this could be our line-up as we attempt to negotiate our ever lengthening CL qualification campaign:

    Gordon; Forrest, Bitton, Simunovic, McGregor; Morgan, Rogic, Ntcham, Christie, Hayes;

    Edouard

Subs: Bain, Ralston, Listing, Ajer, Brown, Mulumbu, Kouassi, Benyu, Johnston, Dembele

Scary! The recruitment department had better get busy…

  9. Celtic call out the sfa/refs and a couple of hours later a story appears about Beaton calling police about some texts received nearly a week previous.

We did call for some transparency, and, well, it’s all very transparent.

  10. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

Don’t have a problem with Burke, although he hasn’t been playing much. Seem to remember him being a very direct player.

The Leipzig move maybe came too early for him. Moving to West Brom probably wasn’t right for him at the time. Tony Pulis is never going to be the best manager for an attacking player.

At the age now that he’ll be pushing hard to restart his career.

Not our highest priority position, but one that does need to be strengthened. Only Forrest has played to his potential this season and even he has been off his best lately, although maintaining his October-November form was always going to be difficult.

Would rather have got Roberts, but maybe that wasn’t possible. At least it’s more competition in the squad.

    Other positions still need addressing.

  11. GlassTwoThirdsFull on

    Jobo Baldie 12:38

Interesting that you mention the need for an “enforcer”.

As well as Callum has done playing in the deeper area I don’t think we can ever expect him to be that!

In some games there will be the need for two players in there – one creative and one more destructive.

I wonder if Ralston could be used there? Good energy about him and doesn’t seem to mind getting “stuck in”. He could maybe become a Jackie Mac type “utility” player. I think we need a new RB, but he has shown some promise in that position and deserves a place in the squad. Could maybe become our long-term RB, but get some games in midfield in the meantime? Just a thought……

    ” squads post Brexit ”

Heard an item on Radio 4 at the beginning of December 2018

Expert said Brexit was a major hassle for UK football – He claimed that @ 350 full time players would be affected by Brexit – to varying degrees in consequence of Hard / Soft / No Deal etc .

If football And footballers are treated the same as everybody else than footballers from the EU will have to meet whatever criteria are set by the UK Government . In theory that should mean that a player from eg Belgium would be treated the same as a player from Burkina Faso . Freedom of Movement etc.

My- you’ve got it all worked out, eh? Here’s my final reply to your points, out of courtesy, but this is my last word on the matter- you can have the final say – after all you believe you can fill in my parts of the discussion, anyway.

SFTB, Did you have a go at Paul for the inconsistency charge? or are your posts just where you feel you can argue a point for him?

Nope I didn’t reply to YOUR point re the inconsistency between Paul’s (??) two views on Beaton. I did not even notice them till you highlighted them. By that time, I was embroiled in several discussions on the blog on the point I was making so I had no room on my dance card. Why don’t you address your point about Paul’s inconsistency directly to Paul?

In other words Paul defending but zero balance.

Did you want to hear the argument of the defender or is the verdict already in?

Are you a friend , I’d understand your stance in that case, I’d have more respect for you too because i like people who stick up for pals, I’d do the same, however on a blog, i think you should be upfront, that way posters can decide in your motivations then decide for themselves.

My first instinct was to say “None of your business” because it would really be irrelevant. Then I thought , are you only attacking him because he nicked your burd once, because that I would understand, but that too is irrelevant. So, I decided to answer your cheeky question but I am not going to say, in future, who, on CQN, are closer friends because a) it’s irrelevant and b) it’s none of your business and c) most of them were in the debate already expressing views contrary to my own and closer to yours. BTW, have you listed all your friends before you made your point, if you believe it to be the upfront way?

Anyway, Like many on here I know Paul and have met him socially, usually at CQN events, but, no, neither of us would describe each other as friends. I last met him on the way to a Celtic match- it was around the first time in over a year that I had spoken with him. We move in different business circles. His office is around half a mile from my work base but I have only ever met him in that town by arranging to do so, once about 5 years ago.

We have no plans to meet. We don’t e-mail or phone each other and I don’t meet his family members regularly either. That comprehensive enough for you. My motivations were to argue my own point- what are yours, Sherlock?

I notice you didn’t admit to Paul saying one thing you disagreed with in your rebuttal, i had predicted that in my mind (your going to have take my word for that, no beyond reasonable doubt evidence ?) and just played the man.

Hardly worth replying, if you can predict it all. As far as I was aware, I was answering the charge, made by several people, that Paul’s stuff is writen by or dictated by PL, so there was no rebuttal of anything but that point. All else was my expression of my own view on matters such as whether there was an organised ref’s conspiracy (I disagreed) or other more complex pressures at play (I agreed and some other posters- ernie Lynch and SoT, amongst them, had made that point also- P.S. Don’t think I’ve ever met either of them), or on the government’s handling of post-Brexit Ferry contracts.

I am confused by your final statement as it reads- “I had predicted that in my mind and just played the man”, because you are accusing yourself of that offence when, I think but I’m not presumptious enough to know, that you meant to accuse me of that. If that is the case, you should have supplied examples, as this period of correspondence is at an end from my point of view. For example, did I accuse posters of only expressing an opinion because they were friends with Paul, or of never being critical of Paul67 (I assume you overlooked my point on the article re Madden’s gambling habit, or the points where I have said PL is grossly overpaid for the job he does) or of having no balance? That might be construed as playing the man but we all do a little bit of that, don’t we?

I’d rather see some balance, see you tell us exactly where you DISAGREE and agree rather than play the man but i understand that leaves you in quicksand territory, you like solid safe ground. HH

OK- I disagree with your point but I have no views on you as a person. Now help me out of this quicksand and get me into the safe ground where the majority of the posters are, saying PL is a bad man out to do Celtic down (that looks safe territory to me). I don’t have the social media confidence to be a minority view where, as far as I could see, only WITS and Burnley 78 were expressing views close to my own.

    The floor is now yours.

  15. Welcome to paradise Olly Burke.

Can’t say I know too much about the lhad but someone paid £15 mill for him, albeit crazy EPL prices. Hope he has the same impact as Paddy Roberts. Does anyone know if we have an option to buy clause or is it just a short term loan deal (Wishful thinking that we would spend anything like WBA would ask for if he turns out to be any good?)

Now just where are we with the acquisition of a ‘PROVEN’ striker. Reading here we have made a take it or leave it £2 mill offer for the Ivorian player. Which indicates to me, given the relatively small fee involved that he is being viewed as a project rather than the finished article. Didn’t we pay over £3 miil for another Ivorian project ‘Eboue Kouassi’ ? A strange signing that has turned out to be.

Come on Celtic finger oot. Winter break will be over soon as will the opportunity to ‘bed in’ any new signing before the ‘battle of attrition’ recommences; that is Scottish football under the new ‘ allowed to kick the bejayus out of Celtic players’ SFA rules

  16. Burke on a short term loan? Completely underwhelmed by that! I follow West Brom as that’s where Mrs RobinBhoy is from and she was a big fan in the days of Cyril Regis, Laurie Cunningham and Brendan Batson.

Also have a mate who still follows the Baggies, tells me Burke couldn’t kick his own arse. Hayes, Morgan (a better looking Hayes) and now another nonentity signing.

    Squad building my @rse!

  17. All you guys who haven’t picked your team for GG4 ( I’m looking at you, Bada ) the clock is ticking…12.30 kick-offs are now not available……..

  18. “Ex ref Richmond says Morelos deserved red”

Richmond, who stepped down after 12 years ago, insisted he had been frozen out for not “sucking up” to his bosses.

    Strange wording, anyone remember this?

  19. Oglach

When Kouassi arrived, he picked up – was it Malaria or something ?

He is now out for season with a serious knee injury

He is still only young, ( just turned 22) and may still have an impact

Will be next season at earliest before we know

  20. Jamesgang

Much as though I warm to his off the field persona and want him to succeed……who would buy him on the form of last current and previous season?

For a start….Us two seasons back.

  21. Welcome Ollie.

Would far rather have a hungry young player with potential and something to prove over two old guys looking for a last pay cheque.

  22. Deals should have been agreed in last couple of months, get them signed on 1st or 2nd January, all set for the Dubai trip

  23. Tried everything, ad blockers etc yet those pesky ads keep on “gettin’ through” Now getting starting to get those darn ‘ your system is infected with a virus’ spam ads. Only on this site mind you and my BT security system blocks CQN every now and then listing it as a risk!!!

  24. Jobo @ 12.38

    You are correct.

I just want good signings, normally if you spend some cash on quality, you get quality.

Buy cheap buy twice. That is my reasoning, sometimes it does not work out that way.

But of course you can get projects that we can develop and cash in on, but I am fed up with someone who might be good in 2 years time.

I am just frustrated and think we deserve good quality ready made first team players and I think to get them we will have to pay a lot of cash.. Cash that we have.

Again all in my humble opinion

    D. :)
