Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

  1. FAVOURITE UNCLE on

On a slippy Bloomfield Road surface, West Ham were torn apart by Scottish midfielder Tony Green as the Tangerines, led by new manager Bob Stokoe, ran wild.

“Green was on a roll – I never saw anybody play on ice like that. He was like a ballerina, you thought he had a pair of ice skates on. He was brilliant that day and they ended up beating us,” Best continues.

Despite only a few points separating the teams in the table, the Hammers were expected to defeat a side who were relegated a few months later. Instead they suffered a humiliating 4-0 loss.

That was another one that got away.BOB KELLY i know better than anyone .somethings never change.just ask KEV.

  2. Did beaton used to be a communications officer for strathclyde plod?

If so would he have the black on the scottish press corp?

    Aye!

  4. Good Morning, everyone.

If Ollie Burke is the answer, then I think we’re asking the wrong question. Boy has talent, but has hardly kicked a ball in earnest these last two years.

Also, many thanks for being considered for the Seville Legacy. Humbled and honoured. Sorry for not getting back to everyone who sent good wishes…. the two-legged creatures at FRED are all smitten with stomach bugs and I’m the lone last man standing. Thankfully the 4 legged critters are all fine. Just been fed and now desperate to go out to play two hours late.

Still hoping for a major, not loan, signing.

  6. I think most businesses will admit that competition is good and that it keeps them on their toes and promotes innovation. I can’t think of any business that would intentionally drop their performance to allow a competitor to steal a march on them. Now complacency that is another thing altogether.

    Burke ?

Leipzig gave Nottingham Forrest big money for him .. I remember their Manager stating that he was super fit , seriously quick and strong but when it came to game intelligence – he was distinctly lacking . Maybe he has improved since then.

  10. Let Beaton phone the Police, let them investigate any issues, go for the SFA Celtic and their Referee Committee

Cricket lovely cricket ( watched in Sicily via a USA Cricket Channel . The internet is a wonderful thing ! )

India lead by 386 runs . Australia need 187 runs to avoid the follow on . Australia look like a shadow of their former selves . Looks like being busted for cheating has diminished their confidence and swagger .

  13. Good morning, friends.

Serious question. Have Sevco actually completed the signing of anyone in January yet? Given the press coverage over the last couple of days I believed that they had but am I mistaken? And are we therefore in first with the loan signing of (yet another winger) Oliver Burke?

  14. Surely we should be at the stage now where we have a strategy to develop a squad for the long-term… 6 month loan deals are not the answer

  15. For clarification, any time we sign a new player I really hope it works out and I’d certainly never be critical until he’s had a chance to perform in the Hoops. I learned this via the ‘Lubo Who’ lesson. However, there are other areas of the team that also need strengthening (no kidding, Sherlock!).

And, of course, Paul67 may not be as happy after Thursday’s “I would forgo all other positions to get central defence sorted out this month….” ;-)

  16. There’s nothin’ on the huns fishal site about them deffo having signed anyone.

Obvs, their Level 5 mouthpieces are earning their overtime.

  17. Wouldn’t think for a minute Willie Collum would pop into the Brazen for a beer, and happily pose with smiling Celtic fans. I don’t think any referee would get a friendly reception in any “Celtic” pub. But if he did and photos emerged in the public domain, how would the smsm react, ignore it?

  18. Joe Filippis Haircut on

Well Celtic make there first signing in this transfer window subject to a medical Ollie Burke will join the hoops on a six month loan.So those fans desperate for a Celtic signing they can now relax and let the club get on with there transfer business in this window.H.H.

To save me the experience, I will take your word on it.

    Hail Hail

  20. Good luck to Ollie Burke.

But seriously is he what we needed.

It’s a start, I want a £6-7 million first team ready right back

£6,7,8,9 million first team ready centre forward.

£6,7,8 million first team ready centre back

    Another centre forward

Spend at least £23 million easy Peasy.

We have had 12 months of shambolic transfers

    All IMO of course

I once swapped a 12 inch of money in my pocket for a genuine Lisbon match programme. Best deal I ever did.

  22. Hi CQN

Now caught up, had a busy day yesterday, so couldn’t post

1stly – lucky Cody – brother Madden was 4th official

    Now yesterday’s events

Like many was hugely frustrated and even angry with Paul67 lead article

And then delighted with the Celtic Statement

    Now only my opinion

I believe we now have another Dougie Gate in our vision, hopefully target

I I hope Celtic can share with us fans

Why would any referee highlight in any report, that he had witnessed 3 incidents with a player, and thought as acceptable ?

Celtic have rightly asked to see the match report, which they are entitled to see ?

If it has been commented on, we prove Beaton has different rules for different players ? Goodbye

If this is not the case, as reported – who put statements out from FtSFA ?

So we can then pursue this line

Either way, if we see this through, someone or several heads must role

Incidentally we also get to expose the inner thoughts of the other 3 match officials, who either seen or didn’t see, and didn’t feel the need to identify any match misdemeanours by Sevco

You know the blatant elbow on Ryan Christie, right in front of Unionist Red card Ross

So go for the juggler Celtic, we can win this battle with hard evidence, be that written or the inner workings of FtSFA

    Other matters in forcing change

I have not attended an away game, a Scottish cup game or a league cup game now for about 7 or 8 seasons

Time for others Celtic fans to follow suit – this will force a radical rethink on Scottish football

My Green pounds are only spent funding Celtic, and Celtic only
