Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

  8. Good morning all, just chilling in the Chilterns…

Great measured statement by Celtic yesterday, exactly what was required.

Sevco Rangers players have been given huge leeway by Referees and the SFA alike as the Scotland needs a strong Rangers campaign picks up speed…

Their recent little ruse is completely untenable and they’ve been caught out, just like the “honest mistakes” seasons.

Fact is Beaton overcooked it, by letting Morelos loose to menacingly stroll the field like a sporting buffalo he quite frankly made a mockery of the rules…

…of course the calling a marginal offside or not is the prerogative of the officials and deciding where to put up the flag has less to do with the forwards position relative to the defenders are more to do with the colour if the jersey worn by the forward. We see clear examples this Season, similarly with the award of penalties…

However, kicking, punching, elbowing, stamping etc etc are much more clear cut… of course the standard referees defence is to do a Wenger… “I didn’t see it…”

Fine, we know you did but we can’t prove it…

Of course these incidents can then go to the SFA who can use video evidence and take retrospective action…

Now the thing is Beaton over cooked it… not only did he cheat on the day, by not pleading the 5th and saying he saw the incident, he ensures not only does Morelos get away with it on the day, but the SFA can’t take action… ‘sorry, the Referee saw all the incidents….

Beaton wanted his cake and eat it, we saw how confident Referees are about getting away with this a couple of days earlier when Willie Collum gave advantage to Aberdeen on every game changing decision…

Yet, as I said, Beaton overcooked it, I’m sure his friends and associates are saying, why did you say you saw all the incidents? Why didn’t you give Morelos late in the game… there is an art to partial officiating and Beaton has put himself in an untenable position…

Celtic are asking these questions at the right time…

They allowed due process to happen, then ask… Why didn’t the Referee act, he saw the incidents, we all saw the incidents, why didn’t he act!?

The game was won by Sevco Rangers on the park… no hard feelings, on the day the best team won but… it doesn’t mean Sevco players have carte blanche to injure Celtic players.

We have had numerous Clubs moan about Referees this Season, specifically Aberdeen and Hearts who have called for a summit on this… of course Levein wants to make this an old firm thing but Beaton’s display last Saturday allows Celtic to point the finger towards the real culprit.

The rock was rolling, Celtic have given it a shove that means it heads in the right direction with a bit of momentum…

Well played Celtic, Level 5/Beaton Deflection, SFA obfuscation can’t hide this…

    Well done Celtic…

    Hail Hail

  9. sporting buffalo = snorting buffalo… doh!

Just to say, this was why Res12 was such a good cause…

The Rangers SFA position was untenable, the timing was just right and because it was shareholder lead… a great opportunity was there for Celtic to call them out without the “sour grapes” tag…

    An opportunity missed:((

    Hail Hail

  10. Good morning from a still dark but grey looking North Staffs

I don’t think anyone on here would disagree that the LNS verdict of no sporting advantage was a stitch up. However what happened on the field of play last Saturday was cheating – and clear sporting advantage gained – did we play badly , yes – would the result have been different if the rules had been applied – we’ll never know.

Having made the statement Celtic have to see this through or nothing will change.

  11. Remember when we thrashed them at Ibrox a couple of years ago? (cant quite recall the exact score Dembele?)

Beaton was the ref and he blew the full-time whistle right exactly on the 90min. He didn’t allow extra time for the substitutions, goals and other stoppages . It was very clear that enough was enough and he didn’t want them to be embarrassed 1min more. Maybe a small thing that was mostly overlooked but it showed clearly that he applied the laws for their benefit.

  12. Good morning CQN from a dry but cold Garngad

I see the defend poooooor Beaton is in full swing, Snyde Sports running with the story of him calling in police. They actually show2 shots of him on the pitch and each time laughing with 2 different ugly sevco hymn bassas.

Watch as the day goes on and Traynor and Whyte get that clip edited.

Celtic must see the statement through and if the pooooor Refs go on strike.

    What a feckin result.

Let’s be clear here Gerrard, Levein, Lennon, Clarke, McInness have all complained about referees, so if any spin is about us causing a referee revolt then it’s utter, utter bollocks.

Ps have we signed anyone yet??? Didnae think so.

    Aff tae wet the bed.

    D. :)

  13. Yes -it was the 1-5 game at Ibrox. 3 goals and a few substitutions in the second half. And Beaton adds zero extra time. He was clearly hurting as much as the rest of the huns.

  14. BAMBOO @ 8:21 AM,

In the tunnel at Ibrox before the match on Saturday, Sevco Rangers were lining up, Beaton having a chat and a laugh with then, McAllister and Gerrard and others come out… Beaton makes a point of shaking their hand… Scott Brown walks up withthe Celtic players in parallel with the Secovians… banter stops, he looks at Scott with disdain before leading the teams out…

Knew then he’d be at it… hope someone can find it, together with his performance in the match, his match report and his celebration with Bellshill Rangers fans…

After a brutal match booked one Sevco player with two minutes to go…

    Hail Hail

  15. Good morning CQN from an overcast but once again dry Forrres. So according to Catman Ollie Burke 6‘ 2” winger on loan and Vakoun Issouf Bayo 6’ striker (who has always supported Celtic?) are about to arrive. I like the look of Bayo who appears to score about 30% of his goals with his head and doesn’t appear frightened to put his head in (Ivorian Frank MacAvennie, whaurs the burdz?) We badly need height up front. Get these two in this week then look for a right back and CH, permanent not loans and also a tough playmaker who won’t lose interest when his pal is transferred – best to be antisocial with nae pals ???

  16. prestonpans bhoys on

Sutton on click bait territory on the DR saying the signing of a 34 and 36 unmatch fit players is a season changer. Must have very little regard for the standard of our league, no wonder BT’s bid was so low probably reflect of his opinion too.

  17. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

It’s time for ‘guess the SFA/SMSM deflection tactic’.

Which Celtic ‘legend’ will they wheel out to criticise the statement?

Will they go for a former corrupt official to stand up for the current crop of corrupt officials?

Will it be something else (I see someone’s already mentioned Beaton’s Called the police)?

    Answers on a postcard.
