Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

Maybe just maybe the celtic CEO wanted to do the right diligence and discuss with manager and legals and other board members before going public on this issue.

    ====================================================================

Celtic FC had to wait until Beaton had been questioned and the SPL ( SFA ? ) had issued their statement .

  2. WITS- all well here sir

I hope you are well to.

Back on the salads on Monday.??

Paul67 or someone wrote the words of today’s blog which offended. That blog was not dictated by PL. It is just a lot of fluff in the end and another sign that we are all a little overtired and still hurting from our defeat by Sevco last week. A defeat that we deserved despite our concerns about Beaton.

As you are want to ask do you know this for a fact?

Deserving of a defeat i would agree with.

  4. Oliver Burke is the first sign of Celtic tooling up physically for domestic away games.

Expect more 6ft plus players, good start, we need more.

Thanks, a lot to take in there.

I am of the if I can say it in a few words I will :-)

    So here goes……

The referee strike was NOT of our doing, we questioned a decision by the referee, our manager was then lied to, I imagine protect the referee from revealing why he cheated us, they were caught telling lies and decided to strike, that is what happened.

If you want to believe that the referees are not anti Celtic, fine by me.

I don’t believe you if you think that, so there.

  9. 50 years ago I went to Parkhead for the first time.

Celtic had won just 6 league titles in 50 years previous. 3 in a row at that time.

We were a clear 2nd to Rangers at that time and had been beaten by Rangers for the 2nd time that season and drawn 3 of our previous 5 games before my dad and uncles gave way to my pestering to go with them. The 400 yards or so from my Grans Tenement along to Paradise via the Supporters Association in London rd.

Rangers had complained about a celtic sympathising ref who had been ostracised. I hate to think what 1969 CQN would have been like.

Celtic has won 26 leagues since then. 6 more than our nearest rivals despite their ‘advantages’ . We are on another plain financially and we have clear strategic direction in a rigged market. My old man and his mates would have said many a Hail Mary for what we now have abd have had in my Celtic lifetime. Approx 1650 games and still faithful.

Off to celebrate 50 years with a wee dram and a selection of my favourites on you tube : 2-0 McAvennie, Leeds Utd away, Sporting Lisbon TB classic, Liverpool Annfield 2-0, Lyon home Liam M, 6-2, 3-0 Ibrox Larsson, 5 nil league win, Dundee U TB game, St Mirren 86. Barca 2012.

Of course I don’t know all this as fact (which is why I put the supporting evidence out there) but I know what hangs together and what doesn’t.

The idea that PL writes stuff on here, a little known and read part of the Timternet, which is, in turn, only a small part of the Celtic support to test something out for an hour or two before doing the exact opposite of what was said, 2 hours later needs a couple of things in order to have plausibility.

It needs PL to be an idiot and worthy of the sack.

It needs Paul67 to be a willing dupe with no regard for personal reputation

It needs the angry CQNrs to believe that they won a battle, on our own little bubble, and got the “Board” to take action that they would not have taken.

As I said, if the version of events above is true, Peter Lawwell should be sacked.

    How’s that for happy clapping.?

“If you want to believe that the referees are not anti Celtic, fine by me.”

Not only do I believe it, I KNOW to to be true,

However, SOME refs may be biased and others may willingly join in with institutional bias, despite not possessing that bias in the first place.

That is what I wrote in the first lengthy piece.

It’s a lot more complex than a lodge meeting with oaths of blood by all to “do those fenian bassas”.

When statements are issued by the club they need to be drafted more carefully than that (though thankfully, we can still write pretty much what we like on this slanted blog).

That is why I think the club have made a safe and measured intervention. I have no faith that it will come to anything, just as the ref’s strike changed nothing, but I still appreciate the effort.

Still not letting the club off on Res 12 though.

    Hey, here’s an idea!

What if we all start writing manning posts tomorrow about Res 12 and the club’s non-reaction? Would that not bring PL quickly on to the starting blocks?

Or does it not work like that?

    Off to watch a film

The SFA’s response to Celtic’s statement:

We welcome discussion with any of our member clubs.

“The board discussed this last month and it was agreed that we would arrange a meeting involving stakeholders including managers, our referee operations department and PFA Scotland.

“This will be an excellent opportunity to open dialogue, answer questions and discuss opportunities to improve our game.”

So many strangers and those who only come out in the ‘dark’ on here oddly enough.

There are many things our board get wrong but blanket blame for everything the tabloids and their modern on line outlets peddle is just stupid. If running our club was so easy why did so many screw it up before the current guy ? Why has the current guy lasted and why are we in a period of unprecedented success ? I would love to see how some of the armchair CEO experts on here would do. ‘Belfast Celtic in a week’ springs to mind. And of course we all see how that harmed Linfield ……. Ahem ?.

It needs PL to be an idiot and worthy of the sack.

Could also be that he is a very savvy social media operator?

It needs Paul67 to be a willing dupe with no regard for personal reputation

Could the rewards outweighs the negative.as a plausible alternative ?

It needs the angry CQNrs to believe that they won a battle, on our own little bubble, and got the “Board” to take action that they would not have taken.

Why angry? Not sure anyone believes posting on here can influence Celtic’s thinking .

  18. We lost against them , because we had no bottle . We s### ourselves . We can’t expect to win games with more than half a team hiding , the same suspects hid against , hibs , and Kilmarnock

too . Our much lauded coach , made a few gaffs into the bargain , playing McGregor at left back was a mistake , his continual loyalty to players now not good enough to don the hoops is another mistake , we can’t afford many more mistakes if the 8 has to be achieved . Also Instead of bleating on every time that wee scumbag Morelos irritates us , Why in the name of god don’t we have a player who can stiffen him . He sticks it on broonie at every turn , that wouldn’t, have happened a few seasons ago , he had a go at 3 of our players not one of our players marked his card . Way way to soft . Time to toughen the team up mr Rodgers. With regards no action from the SFA , no surprise there , along with no serious action from our club , apart from a poo poo statement . I’m beginning to think they have something on us .

  19. Our Statement is good because it is entirely logical and hits the spot. There are 3 possible options only when it comes to Beatongate,

1, he saw all 3 incidents and is incompetent. As a grade 1 FIFA listed referee, a huge concern

2, he is a cheat, saw all 3 but ignored them

3, someone at the SFA asked him to say he saw all 3 when he didn’t, to protect Morelos from a retrospective ban as they have a pro Sevco bias or are scared of them. Beaton himself could have decided option 3.

Clearly neither of the above options are acceptable. There are no other possibilities.

The next logical step is to ask for John Beaton’s version of events which we have done and once received to address these with the SFA hierarchy. We will not get an explanation from Beaton, certainly not in public. But it certainly fires a warning shot at him, his colleagues, peers and his superiors.

    Nice deflection from you.

The major problem i had with today’s leader is it is a completely different view point from a few days ago.

Now as you know the inner workings of Paul’s mind, was this a dramatic change of opinion?

    Go on i dare you?

  23. Someone at Celtic Park has to be reading CQN and other Celtic blogs its a good business practice to gauge what your customer base is demanding and talking about.

I spend too much time on here myself its like a drug I am hooked on Celtic,I live overseas and get my info on CQN. A lot of the posters have been watching Celtic for years and years, myself since the mid fifties when my dad took to me to games I can’t even remember now, but Tully, Evans, Peacock,. Fernie and Auld (first time )were playing. A lot of these supporters would be considered experts in the amount of time they have spent watching the team, their views should be listened to at Celtic Park .I have been amazed how many times they have dissected the players abilities, positions needed filling, and the managers past and present ,tactics good or bad and have been bang on. A lot of frustration has been expressed today and the last week ,if someone is frustrated and expresses their views give them their due, its because they are frustrated and don’t think the club is doing enough on their behalf. I hope they don’t abandon the blog every point of view should be heard and listened to, you can decide for your self what to do with the point made

Celtic are in a great place at the moment and how the Board deals with their Duty to further enhance our position as the Premier Team in Scotland is in their hands ,and we are watching and hoping they take another step in the right direction to ensure we stay there for the foreseeable future. By winning 7 trophies in a row we have conquered Scotland ,now let,s make a statement in Europe. And listen to the Fans they have a lot of good points that should be discussed at Celtic Park.
