Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

  1. Go tell the Spartim on

I’m not too unnerved by Burke signing, hungry players with something to prove was MON’s go too. Gives us more forward options and it’s not forever.

Slightly more heartened at us looking for a Defender, not buying the bravado of our take it or leave it offer as reported on here. Faith in Catman as ever and Lennybhoy

If reports are true that’d be 3 added up front which at least gives us options and at the very least French Eddie can play as part of a 2 which makes a diff to him and more importantly us

  2. By the way Burke if I’m not mistaken went for £13 million to RB Leipzig I think then West Brom bought him for £15 million, so there should be a player there that BR can develop.

I said last night he was pish, maybe a tad hasty with my words, I meant he has not fulfilled the potential that his big fees should dictate. Maybe the next 6 months will be his time to shine, I certainly hope so.?

  5. Thoughts on this proposal.

I’m a great advocate of crystal clear and straightforward , open way of doing things. To this end I suggest a system of briefings from the club. Now this can be broken down int a Core brief by our CEO to all departments , followed by local briefs to all parties. Now, to achieve this we need good communications. Say, we the fans, would register with the club as similar to a pop bands fan club, we pay a nominal fee of no more than £20 per year, half of which would go to Celtic Charities like Mary’s Wheels etc. In return, the “members” would get a no nonsense brief on what;s happening aT Celtic, no secrets, warts and all every month. Details of revenue, players of interest, basically all that is happening in Planet Celtic.

This would be open to fans worldwide and would create great interest and a few bob for the needy.

    Just my thoughts.

Happy with the club statement but they MUST follow it up big time.

  6. I don’t think the height of a footballer matters in professional football. Well perhaps apart from the SPFL where an opponent is allowed to kick, punch and gouge without fear of being booked or sent off.

Having said that given the opportunity to sign an average 6′ 3″ striker or 5’9″ Henke who would you take? Given the chance of a signing a run of the mill 6′ midfielder or 5’7″ Andrés Iniesta who would you take?

Celtic’s greatest ever player 5’4″ But wee Jinky had players around him that would deliver quick and unyielding retribution on players who ‘left the boot in’. Don’t believe we have one player in our current squad who would do this

Skill & bravery not height determines the quality of a player. But once again sadly the caveat being the SPFL is a league like no others.

    Any updates on Res 12?

I was at the AGM and I thought Celtics legal guy, think it was Michael Nicholson was going to arrange to speak to one of you guys later on.

Did he have a chat and was there anything positive to report?

  9. A very big welcome Ollie.People like me,who would not know you if you fell in their soup, already discarding you.I will wait until you have a couple of games under your belt as like the vast majority on here,I have hardly ever seen you play.I should not really let that get in the way of a right good discarding though, should I.

    Good luck son.Do us proud.

  10. Chick Hun on Shortbread, majoring on the Level 5 guff re Beaton, he will get a warm welcome in Ayrshire today.

  11. Have those pesky Slovaks not wilted under Pistol Petes demonic bargaining wiles yet.

    What are they like,eh.

  12. So, Beaton has “contacted police” but is still “waiting to speak to officers”. How does that work then?

No got back to him after a week. Think you’ve been rubbered John.

  13. I think our priority now is to win this years League, if Burke can be the winning of a couple of crucial games that helps us in this quest then Happy Days.

My best mate & fellow Celtic Fan who is also a fan of German Soccer texted me this morning to say he had watched him a few times when he played with Leipzig , He sees him as a more attacking midfielder then an out and out winger and also said he was good in the air. Couldn’t understand why he was struggling for game time with West Brom.

  14. Mirin is far too old for PL to consider.

PL pondering if he should bid or not,

“So Brendan you are interested in this player, ok then lets have a wee look. Hud on there just a wee min, he’s 27 at present we offer the usual 3 year deal – nah you can fecking forget about that we’d never make a penny on him”. “Ok next one Brendan and he’d better not be over 25 ok”

I had a few posts on here with others when Burke was at Forrest, hoping we’d sign him. Then next thing you know he’s off to Germany for £9mill (i think). Seen him quite a few times since and he hasn’t kicked on.

He’s very much a winger, all pace, power and a bit of skill. Not one for keeping possession, so not a player for midfield in a BR team.

He was on shortbread earlier. Wasn’t asked a single question about the decisions – it was all about big, nasty Celtic driving referees away from the game.

Anyway, I’m sure it was all their own work and nothing to do with any external pr companies!

St Mirren fan accusing Celtic of sour grapes.

Apparently Beaton (or “John” as he calls him, in a very “Walter” type way) is the best referee in the country.

  20. Someone should have reported Beaton to the police to save him having to turn himself in like that. :-)

  21. Welcome Olivier Burke, the lad definitely has talent, so hopefully he can in and do a good job for us…

If I’m reading the runes correctly he will ll need to:(

Olly is a £15M players less than half way through a 5 year deal. We have him on a 6 month loan contract and no buying option has been mentioned. So like Benkovic he’s a short term stop gap…

Now considering we’ve already got wingers, including Scotland’s #1 prospect in that position (easing out OB), the two footed Lewis Morgan. Why would we be assisting WBA develop their players rather than developing our own?

Why have we not signed the RB and CH we’ve been looking for, for over six months?

As said earlier, reading the runes, the logic follows thus:

Those who state Brendan is off in the Summer are correct – his squad building stopped in July ’18

We will patch up the first team in this transfer window with the aim to be better than Sevco, so winning the league and hopefully the Cup

We will see huge changes in the Summer… my prediction… most not for the better. These changes will be made to cut the wage bill of the football management and coaching staff as well as reducing the players wages… We will already see a reduction to this in this year’s accounts.

My reason for saying the above is manifold but its drawing from the actions and inactions of Celtic PLC e.g…

Selling our £30M striker in the Summer without replacement

Failure to bring in quality, permanent players to Celtic in vital positions from July 2018…

Every Celtic supporter will tell you where we need these ghuys and we needed them a while back… it’s a no brainer yet it won’t happen this window…

    Poor show Celtic:((

    Hail Hail

Shortbread in typical hypocrite mode. For years they have been saying refs should be able to explain their decisions. Now all of a sudden they shouldn’t!

  23. Isn’t Burke a replacement for Arzani until he gets back in pre-season ?

Gives Jamesey a rival and break and if it works out then we have a decision to make. If not, then he leaves in the summer.

Never seen the guy kick a ball in my puff so no idea about him….

  24. “Charles” – I used to think he was jist a useful idiot…….but when required he is front and centre for the kause and in lock-step with aw the ithers oan The Journey.

    Horrible, hurtin’, sleekit, hun.

  25. Alleged threatening texts followed by mssm total outrage.

Being intimidated when just doing their job.

Did not notice much outrage by the same suspects when a sevco supporter assaulted a linesman during a game.I’m sure that had impact on his ability to perform.

A tad hypocritical one might think.

  26. I just don’t understand the Burke loan signing at all. He is a risk given his lack of playing time. Surely we need players who are match fit and can bring immediate impact? Some say BR can develop him, really? in 6 months. It took that long for BR to affect James forrest. Also, what does this do for the likes of Morgan and Hayes confidence in getting a game.

I like Burke, there is a player in there and he has great speed and physique. I see him in the Armstrong mould but on the right side. Would have preferred an 18mth loan to work the game into him.

Anyway, good luck to the lad.

RB and CB are absolute must haves this window – and they must not be projects. BTW Bayo and Weah are projects!

  27. Given what West Brom paid for Burke, there is no chance of buying him,not match fit,yet another winger, baffling…..
