Beaton threshold on kicking, stamping and the rest

1148

We deservedly lost at Ibrox on Saturday, so it would have been inappropriate to apportion any responsibility towards referee John Beaton, for the free reign Newco player Alfredo Morelos had to kick Scott Brown, stamp on Anthony Ralston and assault the genitals of Ryan Christie during the game.

These things occasionally happen in football (although seldom in such quantities) and are picked up by the SFA review process.  What is exceptional about these circumstances is that the review process is unable to act as the referee claims to have witnessed each incident and determined no action was worthy of a caution or more.

Beaton will have mitigated his decisions with some or other explanation, perhaps with “It wasn’t that bad a stamp” type comment.  This is how the process works.  The system is rightly designed to protect referees and allow them latitude to make decisions, including the occasional mistake.

It is not always easy to view common assault for what it is, in fact, it is easy to get carried away with an occasion and raise your threshold for such matters.  It is only human to be affected this way.  But this is bad refereeing.

Beaton could have taken the easy route out and claimed he missed one or more of the incidents, each was off the ball, after all.  That would have allowed the review panel to dispassionately decide if such attacks are to be prohibited, or encouraged, in our game.  Instead, he affirmed that in his view, there was nothing in Morelos behaviour worthy of a caution.

I have no idea what Dedryck Boyata said to earn his red card from John Beaton against St Johnstone earlier this season but I defended the referee’s decision that day.  You have to trust match officials to competently carry out their duties.  Do I still trust John Beaton’s views on kicking players, stamping, genital punching and the like?  No.  His views and significantly out of line with mine.

I don’t see a conspiracy in what happened this week, just a referee who was not up to the job.  A good referee would have cautioned Morelos for the first incident (kick on Brown).  This may have prevented the more serious attacks on Ralston and Christie, but the Newco player was not even spoken to after any of the incidents.

These are not easy games to officiate but this was not a game full of controversy or incident, only one player and one referee lost the plot.

It shows where Scottish football is when Defoe and Davis are heralded as massive signings when they are at the end of their careers. A move to Grimsby, Chesterfield etc. is their next step. We took those chances a long time ago and got some good performances from what were once superb players. Defoe and Davis were once good players and will have good games here but they are not spl winning quality at this stage in their career. It is still in our hands and getting potential in and maybe one quality player is the way to go in my opinion. We do have to get them in though. The squad is naturally at a turning point and we need a improve the options in a couple of areas of the pitch. And of course we must take account Broonie’s career coming towards an end.

  2. “ They are all flawed thats why they are with us,” a wise man once said on CQN, so welcome Oliver looks like you are another ‘living the dreamer’.

Short term signings won’t please the detractors and cynics, that have been in a twist since the invincibles started to break up. You have to wonder now if BR is committed beyond his next job offer? He could after all have been in China, I’m sure he’ll do his day job well but you have to wonder whether he really cares about team selections Easter Rd, Ibrokes, he could as well have been sending messages to the board culminating with Mikey Johnston as main striker really was bizarre, even a week later.

He’s on record as saying ‘January is a hard window’ which is ‘Celtic code’ for don’t get your hopes up, not even for the Dalglish money it would seem. Go to Dubai and come back better is a good line, but hardly likely because the cobbled up Sevco are determined to do a Jansen on Celtic, with the help of Scotland the nation.

All for Celtic running a tight ship, not a shit tip, but if they blow it, against the team from Delmonte the Celtic support will never forgive them, that includes BR, allowing them to cohabitate is one thing, beating you is quite another.

Only time i have seen Burke is when he scored against the huns playing for a German team.

He absolutely skinned them for pace when attacking the final third.

I have often moaned we don’t use the pace of Forrest and Sinclair by playing to their feet with them facing backwards.

In Burkes goal the ball is played forward of him and he uses his pace to attack space leaving huns floundering and slots ball past goalie.

I hope it’s this kind of play we signed him for as no-one in team does that at present time.

A loan player,to replace a loan player? Is that where we are at?

  5. Can anyone recall if Chick (always supported St Mirren) Young was as vociferous in his outrage at Celtic players and members of staff being sent bullets and bombs, or the racial and sectarian abuse Irish Celtic players faced at just about every ground in Scotland or indeed Celtic’s manager being attacked during televised game of football?

I have watched Armstrong in a few games and he is their most creative and intelligent player so would not read to much into that.

Maybe the coach is saving him for epl games as their survival is more important?

Commentators in the USA in games he has played have praised him.

In a better pass and move team he would be sensational.

  7. I was just thinking there, yes, that’s what the noise was.

If I remember correctly, The state of our squad resembles when MO left, as much as I loved him , I am sure we were left with a depleted squad. I maybe wrong as my memory isn’t too good.

But if I’m talking shite, I am sure one of you good ole bhoys will tell me.?

Oliver Burke – Welcome to Celtic I wish you every success

    HOWEVER

I have a greater interest in a Right Back and a Centre Half – assuming Boyata is going

After that i have an interest in a Centre Forward

I am not interested in “projects” like Hendry, Kouassi, Morgan, Arzani, Hayes, Mulumbu, Allan, Gamboa, Benyu, Compper – and I think you can now add Burke – all good players with a good professional attitude who can come on when we are 3 nil up and help rest our top players

But they cannot come on when we are 1 nil down and change a game – none of them

PL you lost the right to play in the cheap end of the “project” transfer market when you messed up in August

Please go and get at least 2 top first team starting footballers

The message from the Huns is they think they can win the league hence 4 probable first team starters have just been (or are about to be) signed

I said before if we had beaten them and gone 6 points clear with a game in hand – do you think they would go out and get 4 new first team footballers – no chance

They really think they can win the league

I am nervous about what PL thinks

January is starting to feel a lot like August

Early days – but I have seen this film before

Come on Peter go get some decent footballers

When Martin O’Neil left we had a huge budget deficit and the downsizing was inevitable.

Our present circumstances has us with a large surplus and money in the bank.

Surely even this board would not try to justify little or no investment in our squad which has major deficiencies?

    Trying to be optimistic.CSC

In this case I think it makes sense – Arzani is our player next season.

Unlike others I’ve embraced the loan system as a pragmatic response to our problems – it worked for Edoaurd and we got great service out of Roberts and can you imagine paying top dollar for Musounda.

  13. I always believed that the club were salting money away, so that if there ever was a genuine challenge to us the board would spend big money on new signings.

  14. Big Wavy- i get the try before you buy, but we don’t need another winger, specially one who hasn’t played for months HH

  15. I’m finding it difficult not only to post on CQN, but even trying to read the blog or log in is a nightmare.

Trying all these different ad blockers but to no avail. Nothing is worth this hassle. It’s the worst.

“A loan player,to replace a loan player? Is that where we are at?”

No disrespect Bug Wavy but I was going to post this as a “joke” this morning… when I saw your first post thought it was surreal… can’t believe you were serious!!

Brendan didn’t want Arzani. Why should we be developing Man City players anyway? When he came in BR said he wasn’t ready. A Celti legend inttervened and Brendan seemed compelled to play him. He wasn’t ready and got a long term injury…

Arzani is the personification of what’s wrong with Celtic recruitment. We didn’t need Arzani, we needed a permanent, quality, centre half, right back and defending midfielder.

We didn’t need Arzani, we didn’t want Arzani, he wasn’t up to it anyway and now what..!?

    We need to replace Arzani!!!???

Celtic as a Club with any ambition outside financial are finished. Fact!!

  21. Everyone here knows better than Brendan on what we need. The general consensus here is we don’t need a loanee winger, so wtf is going on.

As far as I’m concerned we need to win the f^^^ing League nothing more & nothing less. If a pacy direct winger enables us to vary our game & change our style when needed to break down teams that have our tippy tappy tactics sussed, then yes we need one and I for one welcome the option.

Does that mean Oliver is the right choice, I have no idea or neither does anyone else. You can only judge whether we have made the right call or not when we see the bhoy perform.

I live in hope so it’s welcome to the famous Glasgow Celtic Oliver as far as I’m concerned, play your part in winning this League and you will be a legend.
