Belief structure of the debt lunatics

740

The wisdom of Hearts owner Ann Budge’s comments to the BBC that “Borrowing money for a particular capital programme you can understand, but running up debts that are prevalent in football is beyond my understanding really” is now, in 2014, surely beyond dispute.

Clubs are at liberty to borrow for infrastructure, or in exceptional circumstances, but in the normal course of business, borrowing for football costs should limited to covering the short-term fluctuations in cash-flow.

This thinking was orthodoxy until Sir David Murray led Scottish football by the nose into a spiral of debt accumulation.  The Murray Gospel found many converts among us, those who spoke against it were hounded as heretics.  Debt accumulation was the new crusade, the promised land could be reached with just one more brave act, apparently.

Suggesting this was self-harming nonsense to adherents who had supported a debt-fuelled battle for years attacked a fundamental pillar of their belief system.  Reactions were seldom considered.

It’s in this light we should consider the real lunatics.  Those who encouraged a business model which ended in liquidation, only to come back to the table demanding a fledgling incorporation ‘act like a big club’.  There’s a fair amount of research suggesting humans are hard-wired for religiosity.  We search for something to believe in, then stick with it as best we can.  If you have grown to believe that one more outrageous act will deliver European glory, a good harvest or a rain cloud, part of you will buy into it.

Stewart Regan’s “concern for the Scottish game” at newco Rangers financial position will be genuine, although the “Armageddon” merchant from the SFL has long left the scene.  He notes, “Rangers have got a strong economic impact, not just for Glasgow, but for Scotland generally”.  Well, oldco sure had an economic impact, on the public purse and several hundred creditors.  Mr Regan’s words should be a warning.

This morning Rangers International served notice that their AGM would take place on 22 December, just days within the permitted time period.  Accounts are normally issued with this notice, but for some reason, they were not on this occasion.  They are required 21 days before the meeting (i.e. within days); I’ve no idea what to expect, but it’s sure to be a quintessential Rangers document.

Some great offers on Celtic books and DVDs at CQNBookstore, a name already telling only part of the story!

It’s pretty obvious we need some sort of feeder team network we can send players on loan to get experience. I know we have a link with Oostende and Santos Laguna but not sure if we have ever taken advantage of them for loans.

Serious congratulations… I had to work away from home several years ago, for over 4 years. Had to be done, but it left a big hole in my life that can’t be filled, in terms of time with the wife and kids.

Too many companies now think it’s ok to screw around with people’s contracts and, consequently, live… enjoy gettin it right up them

  3. The Santos Laguna link up is a strange one. I know Crosas ended up there on permanent basis, but Mexico is a long way to go for a club feeder link.

About 6/7 years ago, I remember 2 Celtic youth players went across to Aarhus in Denmark… Might of been Paul Lawson and A) another…

I also remember when Willie McStay was managing Debrecen, he took a youth player or 2 across there as well.

But it doesn’t happen enough…. Just now, Darnell Fisher, LIam Henderson, and possibly McGregor, should be sent out on loan to get consistent 1st team experience

Extremely sad news coming out of STV tonight: Arthur Montford has died.

  5. For what it is worth, I think our big Icelandic striker is getting game time at Brondby and doing reasonably well by all accounts. I see he scored at the weekend.

Not herd much about Amido though… Think he’s struggling over in Belgium

    Night all.

  11. I think some people have picked me up wrong regarding Matthews. I think he is a fine player. He is however never fit. Shame because the lad could be a top performer. The question was asked who would you sign from the SPFL at the moment. I like the look of the boy Paterson. Think he would be a sensible deputy for lustig. He is versatile and offers an option up front if we have a crisis in that department.

I think that their are players in the SPFL who could offer similar or better than what we currently have on loan and we have purchased in recent years. These guys come to the club hungry to succeed and also free up funds to get the so called blue chip players like Guidetti.

I hope if people read back they will see what I meant. Adam Matthews has been at celtic for 3 and a half years and has started 79 games. He has never played more than 27 games a season. I’m not sure when his contract expires but will Ronny offer him another deal?

Think you are right…. Came back to us, and hit the ground running, only to chase the glory and end up on the old Trafford scrap heap
