The wisdom of Hearts owner Ann Budge’s comments to the BBC that “Borrowing money for a particular capital programme you can understand, but running up debts that are prevalent in football is beyond my understanding really” is now, in 2014, surely beyond dispute.
Clubs are at liberty to borrow for infrastructure, or in exceptional circumstances, but in the normal course of business, borrowing for football costs should limited to covering the short-term fluctuations in cash-flow.
This thinking was orthodoxy until Sir David Murray led Scottish football by the nose into a spiral of debt accumulation. The Murray Gospel found many converts among us, those who spoke against it were hounded as heretics. Debt accumulation was the new crusade, the promised land could be reached with just one more brave act, apparently.
Suggesting this was self-harming nonsense to adherents who had supported a debt-fuelled battle for years attacked a fundamental pillar of their belief system. Reactions were seldom considered.
It’s in this light we should consider the real lunatics. Those who encouraged a business model which ended in liquidation, only to come back to the table demanding a fledgling incorporation ‘act like a big club’. There’s a fair amount of research suggesting humans are hard-wired for religiosity. We search for something to believe in, then stick with it as best we can. If you have grown to believe that one more outrageous act will deliver European glory, a good harvest or a rain cloud, part of you will buy into it.
Stewart Regan’s “concern for the Scottish game” at newco Rangers financial position will be genuine, although the “Armageddon” merchant from the SFL has long left the scene. He notes, “Rangers have got a strong economic impact, not just for Glasgow, but for Scotland generally”. Well, oldco sure had an economic impact, on the public purse and several hundred creditors. Mr Regan’s words should be a warning.
This morning Rangers International served notice that their AGM would take place on 22 December, just days within the permitted time period. Accounts are normally issued with this notice, but for some reason, they were not on this occasion. They are required 21 days before the meeting (i.e. within days); I’ve no idea what to expect, but it’s sure to be a quintessential Rangers document.
Some great offers on Celtic books and DVDs at CQNBookstore, a name already telling only part of the story!

As him …
Bada bing
I agree Efe’s time is up.
Commons looks offski too
Matthews tho, I think is decent cover for Lustig, providing he isn’t crocked at the same time. That said, if someone offers 2million + , then I’d guess Matthews would be oot the door as well.
PF, he could have at least made a sham attempt at covering up his bias, like the rest of them do
Stairheedrammy
Aye…that would require guile and intelligence ….nope :-)))

PL will never be kicked out as DD and the board are happy for him to be there and will always vote their 66million proxy votes accordingly.
He is also on the board of the SFA and the Professional Game Board plus on the executive of the European Club Association. As such he is one of the best connected football executives in Europe.
PF, even the heads of the SFA manage to hide their allegiance, apart that is from Farry…and Peat….and Ogilvie….and…….
I like the discussions going on here today about the team. I don’t agree with a lot of the stuff posted particularly about punting Matthews who would have been first pick in the absence of Lustig. The bhoy has been unlucky with some bad injuries in quick succession and is a player.
I also like the stuff about promoting from the youth teams. I was looking on the wiki and found a list of previous young players who came through the youth set up (sorry about the nationality in front of it but I’m feelin lazy!):
Scotland Marc Anthony
Scotland Gary Arbuckle
Scotland Barry Bannan
Scotland Craig Beattie
Iceland Teddy Bjarnason

Scotland Paul Caddis
Republic of Ireland Graham Carey
Scotland Marc Cocozza
Scotland Ryan Conroy
Scotland Stephen Crainey

Scotland Simon Donnelly
Republic of Ireland Michael Doyle
Iceland Kjartan Finnbogason
Scotland James Forrest
Scotland Mark Fotheringham
Scotland Michael Gardyne
Republic of Ireland Jim Goodwin
Scotland Ross Harris
Scotland Chris Hay
Republic of Ireland Colin Healy
Scotland Gary Holt
Scotland Gary Irvine
Scotland John Kennedy
Scotland Paul Lawson
Scotland Simon Lynch
Scotland John Paul McBride
Scotland Kevin McBride
Scotland Ryan McCann
Scotland Brian McColligan
Republic of Ireland Aiden McGeady
New Zealand Michael McGlinchey
Scotland Jon-Paul McGovern
Northern Ireland Michael McGovern
Scotland Paul McGowan
Scotland Brian McLaughlin

Republic of Ireland Cillian Sheridan
Scotland Barry Smith
Scotland Jamie Smith
Scotland Andrew Traub
Scotland Ross Wallace
Republic of Ireland David van Zanten
Nearly all of them ended up playing to a good level. A few played to a very high level but over the last (dunno) 10-15 years we have produced SPL standard players. Very few end up becoming first team regulars.

Peat….the man who attacked the SFA being attacked by innuendo …by innuendo ….just thick
Recurring theme
pfayr-would keep Commons but think he will get punted.RD said in summer, January window might be better for bringing players in,today he said opposite…..
I read a fans comment earlier today, and they used the word Boeriggter….. And I thought, who or what the f@ck is that ??
Bada bing
Deila is getting with the program …transfers have get SFA to do with him …
LB,
Think your being harsh on the right backs, it is a position Celtic never have a problem filling with decent players but to keep on any length of time you’d need to fit him out with an iron man suit. Apparently sanctioned assault is ok, just label the players injury prone and take a price on them.
Wasn’t too long ago GS had five right backs all out injured and mid fielders filling in. Wilson was another “injury prone” player, I’ve not checked but I bet his injury days are far fewer than when he played for us.
I’m no a big believer in injury prone, there are malingerers and there are good players that are not protected for whatever prevailing agenda the officials are following. I tend to look at it from a different perspective, if a player is out injured a lot and has shown form and spirit previously then I take it he has been the victim of bad luck or sanctioned assault, bad luck would be a hamstring or a twist, sanctioned assault is being booted all over the park and carried or limping off.
Boerrigter, Commons, Kayal & Biton should be punted in January with Tonev & Berget returned to their clubs. That would free up space to bring on 3 or 4 players, preferably those chosen by the manager rather than the reason we continuously need a clear out and send our numerous mistakes out on loan.
Bada,
What was said today?
Having spent the last two years working away from; my gorgeous wife, my fine young bhoy, (my and I mean my pad i.e bed, cooking, tv, I.T jiggery pokery, my terrace etc.) my car, my local, my guitars, my band. I return home permanently on Friday to start a new job on Monday.
I had the carpet pulled from under my feet from the mob I am working for just now. A six month contract was verbally offered and then it was reduced to six weeks. They have spent the last two weeks sorting out my last six week work program assuming I have signed the six week extension which I haven’t. I cannot wait to tell them tomorrow that tomorrow will be my last day. I have been practicing my straight face all day.
Two more tic wins before Monday.
Would that be asking too much ?
:-))))))))))))))))

I would rather not sell any RBs and perhaps add a LB to our squad.
PFayr
Cancel me from the party on the 5th.
Can’t be arsed with your know it all attitude. Thanks.
Another shocking blunder by Olympiakos defence.
Scrolling back.
Re the Adam Matthews debate. Simple fact of the matter is that he hasn’t been the same player since that cloven hooved wee fecker Lasley did him. Not even a pen for it either. Shameful.
Ray of hope is that Izzy now getting back to what he was after his injury against Aberdeen. Let’s hope Adam does the same.

Rocket Man
Interesting list….
David Marshall stands out as one who made it big.
I always liked Ross Wallace and Paul Caddis….both have carved out good English Championship level careers. So too Stephen Crainey.
But u are right, a lot of these names we now see playing for St Mirren, Ross County and the likes.
An interesting name on the list was John Paul McBride…. I used to regularly play against him, he played for Hamilton Colts at under 11,12 and 13’s before joining Celtic S-form

Pardon ..?
Just shooting the breeze in a light hearted fashion
Suit yourself.
I take it the ingulish clubs are all winning at the moment?

I think the challenge for the youth set up is to create first team squad players. Has to be! I hope Chris McCart and Jim McGuinness can do it. We need to think about the final hurdle.
Is it talent? Is it physicality? Is it regular competitive football? Is it luck? What is it???
Geordie
In one …you knew that tho ..didn’t you
Awe Naw
Honest question…..where the fek is home??
You’ve been gone so long.
Best of luck to you and yours.hh
First flounce of the night
I’ve liked Junior Diaz since the World Cup but would he be a squad player? 31 anaw…fastest player of this year’s Copa Mundial

Some supporters want to get rid of Tonev and Berget in January so that Ronny can get free up the money to bring in his own players.
Wasn’t it Ronny that brought these two in in the first place?
Plus Mainz have had a good start to the Bundesliga…I think we need a Lustig stature and style player for LB. Good at marking, fast, physical and can head the ball! For certain games anyway…
Rocket Man….
It’s definately not easy…. It’s a combination of things.
Guys like Ross Wallace and Paul Caddis were prohibited because of the quality that was at Celtic at that time.
In years gone by, the youngsters looking to break through, had to be exceptionally talented , I.e McGeady.
At 19,20,21 it’s about getting sufficient top team experience at a good level, to take the players game to the next level. A bit like what Man City are doing with us with Denayer.
Under Lennon, Strachan, and those before them , I think we failed massively at loaning out good young players to teams at the right level for their development. McGregor last season was the first time in a long while, I thought Celtic had done the right thing, in terms of putting a decent prospect away to a good competitive level to get week to week first team experience

Berget, yes. Panic loan because we were short going into Legia game. Tonev, no. RD said he’d never saw him and he was signed on John Park’s recommendation.
HT
Berget obviously
Tonev ..not so sure

Naebody wants Ronny to bring in his own players, we all want him to bring in players we like and if Ronny doesn’t then he’s a know nothing fool, innit :)
