Belief structure of the debt lunatics

740

The wisdom of Hearts owner Ann Budge’s comments to the BBC that “Borrowing money for a particular capital programme you can understand, but running up debts that are prevalent in football is beyond my understanding really” is now, in 2014, surely beyond dispute.

Clubs are at liberty to borrow for infrastructure, or in exceptional circumstances, but in the normal course of business, borrowing for football costs should limited to covering the short-term fluctuations in cash-flow.

This thinking was orthodoxy until Sir David Murray led Scottish football by the nose into a spiral of debt accumulation.  The Murray Gospel found many converts among us, those who spoke against it were hounded as heretics.  Debt accumulation was the new crusade, the promised land could be reached with just one more brave act, apparently.

Suggesting this was self-harming nonsense to adherents who had supported a debt-fuelled battle for years attacked a fundamental pillar of their belief system.  Reactions were seldom considered.

It’s in this light we should consider the real lunatics.  Those who encouraged a business model which ended in liquidation, only to come back to the table demanding a fledgling incorporation ‘act like a big club’.  There’s a fair amount of research suggesting humans are hard-wired for religiosity.  We search for something to believe in, then stick with it as best we can.  If you have grown to believe that one more outrageous act will deliver European glory, a good harvest or a rain cloud, part of you will buy into it.

Stewart Regan’s “concern for the Scottish game” at newco Rangers financial position will be genuine, although the “Armageddon” merchant from the SFL has long left the scene.  He notes, “Rangers have got a strong economic impact, not just for Glasgow, but for Scotland generally”.  Well, oldco sure had an economic impact, on the public purse and several hundred creditors.  Mr Regan’s words should be a warning.

This morning Rangers International served notice that their AGM would take place on 22 December, just days within the permitted time period.  Accounts are normally issued with this notice, but for some reason, they were not on this occasion.  They are required 21 days before the meeting (i.e. within days); I’ve no idea what to expect, but it’s sure to be a quintessential Rangers document.

Some great offers on Celtic books and DVDs at CQNBookstore, a name already telling only part of the story!

  2. “Today’s Scottish commentators are very much poor relations in the commentary department. Arthur along with Bill McLaren were the best Scottish sports commentators.”

    Absolutely.

But to be fair I think there are many really good commentators these days but the viewers enjoyment is spoiled by these co-commentators that just won’t shut up.

  3. “What a Stramash”.One of Arthurs favourites.I remember him commentating the England Scotland game at Wembley.2-0 Scotland.

Just looked back, I get where you are at….just gone through 12 months of “competency reviews” “probation periods” and full on stress to prove I could do a role I had done well for 5 years. How sweet did I feel when another offer landed in my inbox 4 days before my final review? Good on you….I share your joy/luck whatever? Sometimes the good guys get a break and no doubt my mother in laws and my mothers novenas at Carfin played a part. CHEERS,

The question was who would you sign from other SPFL clubs. Just gave my opinion. Personally I would prefer 11 players from our own academy in the first team.

RIP Arthur Montford. Can’t remember his commentarys but do remember him fronting scotsport and enjoying his presenting skills. Total gentleman. Another legend gone from scottish sports broadcasting. The lack of broadcasting characters in Scotland is a shame.

    Rocket man…

    He did….

Utd snapped him up, loaned him to Queens Park for a season, then he had a great season with Utd last year…. He’s still only 20, so was chased from Celtic at 17 or so.

Surely our scouting team or football department could be humble enough to admit they made a mistake, a show an intent to sign the boy when he’s playing so well for Utd.

Robertson was released at 14 by Celtic, and picked up by Queens who then sold him to Dundee Utd

Geordie, Derek Rae is the only half decent Scottish football commentator on the go the now. Thon MacLeod clown on BBC is the worst.

  11. The Champions League groups have been mind numbing this year, no matter how poor a so called big team has performed they can still qualify.

Sure i seen some team qualify with 8 points last night and still have 1 game to go, pretty poor stuff.

    Evening big stuff!

Scariest thought among many on this issue? The fact that the biggest debt lunatics were running the banks.

And for all we know they (or there wee successors) still are.

McLeod and Rob McLean sound like a couple of curling commentators, drafted in to a sport they have no knowledge of.

  15. Looking back…. I remember thinking (wrongly)Arthur and Archie were not very good commentators next to the Engerlanders.

In my opinion, and it means nowt, the entire CL has suffered as a result of sport, FIFA, EUFA and the rest selling their soul to TV. SKY are the main beneficiaries, their “generosity” allows a gravy train of administrators, pundits, suport staff to take money from the actual sport. They are not alone, if SKY were not there the new media moguls frpm the Gulf states and the US will move in. We are heading at a breakneck pace towards an NFL franchise type of game in Europe…..I believe our only hope lies with the German clubs who are less reliant on the TV wedge.

I was in the Tesco on Dalmarnock Road earlier.

There was a motor home with a German number plate in the car park. On display in one of the windows was a Sankt Pauli scarf with a Celtic one next to it then a Bayern scarf next to a Leeds scarf. I assume the guys in the motor home are going to our game tomorrow night.

    A genuine Morton supporter.

  21. I have two abiding memories of Arthur Montford……

    1) He was quizmaster on the televised Scotsport quiz of the early 80’s when the team I

was lucky to play for reached the finals in successive years. He was the ultimate professional making us feel at ease before the cameras rolled ( tho we were still shitting it ).

    2) He gave a talk to our local golf club one night and talked at length of his time covering the Masters from Augusta. I distinctly remember him saying that the journalists covering the event were allowed to play the course the day after the final round and not one of them was able to break 100….Arthur played off 8 at the time !!

Hearts were 2-0 up after 20 mins, with skacel and Paul Hartley giving it big licks to the Celtic support….one of the best away games I have witnessed…..

    Their support were stunned…..then rabid…..brilliant.
