Belief structure of the debt lunatics

740

The wisdom of Hearts owner Ann Budge’s comments to the BBC that “Borrowing money for a particular capital programme you can understand, but running up debts that are prevalent in football is beyond my understanding really” is now, in 2014, surely beyond dispute.

Clubs are at liberty to borrow for infrastructure, or in exceptional circumstances, but in the normal course of business, borrowing for football costs should limited to covering the short-term fluctuations in cash-flow.

This thinking was orthodoxy until Sir David Murray led Scottish football by the nose into a spiral of debt accumulation.  The Murray Gospel found many converts among us, those who spoke against it were hounded as heretics.  Debt accumulation was the new crusade, the promised land could be reached with just one more brave act, apparently.

Suggesting this was self-harming nonsense to adherents who had supported a debt-fuelled battle for years attacked a fundamental pillar of their belief system.  Reactions were seldom considered.

It’s in this light we should consider the real lunatics.  Those who encouraged a business model which ended in liquidation, only to come back to the table demanding a fledgling incorporation ‘act like a big club’.  There’s a fair amount of research suggesting humans are hard-wired for religiosity.  We search for something to believe in, then stick with it as best we can.  If you have grown to believe that one more outrageous act will deliver European glory, a good harvest or a rain cloud, part of you will buy into it.

Stewart Regan’s “concern for the Scottish game” at newco Rangers financial position will be genuine, although the “Armageddon” merchant from the SFL has long left the scene.  He notes, “Rangers have got a strong economic impact, not just for Glasgow, but for Scotland generally”.  Well, oldco sure had an economic impact, on the public purse and several hundred creditors.  Mr Regan’s words should be a warning.

This morning Rangers International served notice that their AGM would take place on 22 December, just days within the permitted time period.  Accounts are normally issued with this notice, but for some reason, they were not on this occasion.  They are required 21 days before the meeting (i.e. within days); I’ve no idea what to expect, but it’s sure to be a quintessential Rangers document.

Some great offers on Celtic books and DVDs at CQNBookstore, a name already telling only part of the story!

  1. Did Pearson not get the winning goal in the play off final after he left us?

Another memory is him leaving Arteta in the turf at ibronx after the boavista game :)

True. Irish and Polish families of nine and ten children has given me mega amounts of cousins. :)

  3. However in mitigation it was Hartley that took the corner from which big Jan won the same and the league at Tannadice. Just saying, I never really took to him at Celtic. Big Jan, on the other hand, never missed a chance to talk us up. Love the guy.

RIP Arthur Montford. Another link with my childhood gone.

Correct, just You Tubed it, and enjoyed it thouroughly. I remember seeing the panic as Hertz double marked Bobo at the free kicks, even sweeter to see it was Hartley who gave away the free kick we won it from.

    Aye very sweet…..

Whit wisnae sweet was gettin back to my car, which was parked just off Gorgie road……they were hunting in packs. Had to help a young lad fae Stornaway ( who was keeking himself ) back to Haymarket. A crowd of about 6-8 of them came up and asked us to speak, I told them I stayed in gayfield square and worked in the widows building up at the commonwealth pool ( which i did in the late 80’s )…..they moved on. Had the last laugh…I asked them what the score was.

Got the lad to the station, then witnessed hordes of them on Dalry road getting searched and some gettin huckled.

From memory it was an early KO, got home about 6ish…watched the game again an got hammered :-)

Delaney’s, Leeds have some of the worst fans in Europe. I know not to judge a support by a sizeable minority but outside Man who, they are the most disliked support and club down south.

A crowd of us were on holiday about twenty years ago and there were about thirty Leeds fans there and a bigger load of lowlife, racist,, vile, disgusting individuals, apart from the blue brotherhood, I have ever had the misfortune to be near.

I loved big JVoH. Met him at the airport and both my sons were wearing their holiday hoops. He was all over them and gave them a wee bung for Spain. Great big guy.

Other memory from that game, was the disallowed goal, I think it was wee Shaun. Was about the 5th phase of play but was chopped of for offside in the first phase ( that all sounds a bit American footbally, but u know what I mean ).

My uncle Danny took me to Elland Rd often in the 70s. Never felt comfortable there. My cousins born in Leeds are all Celtic supporters first, but like Leeds.

Wee story about yon 3 v 2 game v the mini huns.

Watched the game in my local with my mates, got to half time and it was my round so up I goes to the bar and I kid you not there was 15 of us in the round, unknown to me one of my so called mates went next door to the bookies and was quoted 8 / 1 for Celtic to turn the 2 nil around.

He came back to our group got a tenner off of everyone in our round but missed me cause I was at the Bar. And stuck the lot on Celtic to win.

I never knew a thing about it till Big Mick stuck the winner away, remember thinking at the time that the boys seemed to be going even more radio rental than normal, little did I know they were all up £80.

To be fair though I didnt have to by a drink all night after that . Still lost out though.

Maybe its the Guinness kicking in but in my wee warped mind I was thinking about the question earlier about what Scottish players should we sign.

What about L.Wallace then loaning him out to Hibs.

Never happen though he’s bound for geordie shore land as part of Mike arseleys repayment plan.
