Belief structure of the debt lunatics

740

The wisdom of Hearts owner Ann Budge’s comments to the BBC that “Borrowing money for a particular capital programme you can understand, but running up debts that are prevalent in football is beyond my understanding really” is now, in 2014, surely beyond dispute.

Clubs are at liberty to borrow for infrastructure, or in exceptional circumstances, but in the normal course of business, borrowing for football costs should limited to covering the short-term fluctuations in cash-flow.

This thinking was orthodoxy until Sir David Murray led Scottish football by the nose into a spiral of debt accumulation.  The Murray Gospel found many converts among us, those who spoke against it were hounded as heretics.  Debt accumulation was the new crusade, the promised land could be reached with just one more brave act, apparently.

Suggesting this was self-harming nonsense to adherents who had supported a debt-fuelled battle for years attacked a fundamental pillar of their belief system.  Reactions were seldom considered.

It’s in this light we should consider the real lunatics.  Those who encouraged a business model which ended in liquidation, only to come back to the table demanding a fledgling incorporation ‘act like a big club’.  There’s a fair amount of research suggesting humans are hard-wired for religiosity.  We search for something to believe in, then stick with it as best we can.  If you have grown to believe that one more outrageous act will deliver European glory, a good harvest or a rain cloud, part of you will buy into it.

Stewart Regan’s “concern for the Scottish game” at newco Rangers financial position will be genuine, although the “Armageddon” merchant from the SFL has long left the scene.  He notes, “Rangers have got a strong economic impact, not just for Glasgow, but for Scotland generally”.  Well, oldco sure had an economic impact, on the public purse and several hundred creditors.  Mr Regan’s words should be a warning.

This morning Rangers International served notice that their AGM would take place on 22 December, just days within the permitted time period.  Accounts are normally issued with this notice, but for some reason, they were not on this occasion.  They are required 21 days before the meeting (i.e. within days); I’ve no idea what to expect, but it’s sure to be a quintessential Rangers document.

Some great offers on Celtic books and DVDs at CQNBookstore, a name already telling only part of the story!

    Craig Whyte arrest warrant issued

Former Rangers owner Craig Whyte has been detained by police in Mexico.

The 43-year-old was held on an arrest warrant in relation to an investigation into his takeover of Rangers in 2011.

The Crown Office said it would now take the necessary steps to secure his appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court.

Four men have already appeared in court charged with fraudulent activity following the investigation into the sale of Rangers.

A Crown Office spokesman said: “We have been advised that the warrant for Craig Whyte has been executed by the Mexican authorities.

“Our International Co-operation unit, working with Police Scotland’s Fugitives Unit and the National Crime Agency, will take the necessary steps to secure his appearance at Glasgow Sheriff Court to answer the warrant.”

Craig Whyte took control of Rangers in May 2011 but the club went into administration in February the following year.

The men who have previously appeared in court in relation to the fraud investigation are David Grier, 53, Paul Clark, 50, and David Whitehouse, 49, who worked for Duff and Phelps – Rangers’ administrators.

A fourth man, Gary Withey, 50, worked for law firm Collyer Bristow, which represented Craig Whyte before he bought Rangers from Sir David Murray for £1 in 2011.

All four made no plea or declaration at Glasgow Sheriff Court and were granted bail ahead of a future hearing.

Mr Grier, Mr Clark and Mr Whitehouse were also charged with attempting to pervert the course of justice.

A separate arrest warrant was also issued last week for Mr Whyte after he failed to attend a civil court hearing in London in which is he being sued for about £18m by Ticketus in relation to his Rangers acquisition.

The Crown Office will now examine the extradition treaty with Mexico and establish the legal basis for extraditing Mr Whyte unless he waives his right and agrees to the extradition.

  7. Sean,

I’m not sure about prayer and God. It may be me mind you…I think He has decided that I am a lost cause and that all the advantages he has given me have been squandered.

However if he is there and since it is for someone far more deserving than a wastrel like me, perhaps he will listen. I’ll give it a go anyway.

Every best wish possible for the future to you all.

Cannot wait for game tonight- this is what it’s all about bhoys.

Watched first half of game in Salzburg on Celtictv last night. We did ride our luck, but still caused them a few probs. Soooo methinks they will go for an early surprise to catch us out. Then sit in and conserve energy thinking job done. The crowd will be vital tonight – patience required!

  10. Haven’t scrolled back but I see that Sean Thornton & his brother Michael are in need of the CQN prayer lobby. I’m just about to start my journey to Glasgow and will start with a sincere prayer for Michael. Hopefully meet up with a few CQN’ers later in the day. In the Blane Valley or at CQN Corner.

  11. CELTIC legend Billy McNeill well remembers one of the most amazing European nights in the club’s history.

It came in a Cup-Winners’Cup-tie against Partizan Belgrade in September 1989 and one of the Hoops’ stars rattled in four wonderful goals.

And McNeill was still in despair at the end.

The Lisbon Lion recalls the extraordinary game against the Slavs in the new book ‘Caesar and The Assassin’, covering the 13 years he and Davie Hay were bosses of the Parkhead club.

McNeill said: “That was an unforgettable evening at Parkhead Park – unfortunately, for all the wrong reasons.

“Jacki Dziekanowski turned in one of the best striking displays from a Celtic front player I have ever witnessed.

“The Polish ace was unstoppable that night and we finished a pulsating tie by winning 5-4.

“Amazingly, we still went out of the tournament on the goals away rule.

“We had lost 2-1 in the first leg in Belgrade – Mike Galloway scored a cracking goal for us – and thought we had done enough in the return in Glasgow to get through.

“The game was deep into injury time, as it was in those days, when Partizan got their fourth goal.

“It was so annoying when the Slav player was completely unmarked in front of Pat Bonner and couldn’t possibly miss with his header inside the six-yard box.

“The name of the guy? Scepovic – current Celtic frontman Stefan’s father!

“Everyone inside the ground was stunned into silence when the ball hit the net. It was unbelievable. Absolutely incredible.

“Jacki had put in a world-beating performance, scored four fantastic goals – one with the head and three with his right foot – and we hadn’t got past the first hurdle of the competition.

“How many teams score six goals over two legs of a tie and go out?

“It would be marvellous for Celtic to get five tonight against Salzburg.

“Just so long as Virgil Van Dijk and Co remember to do the business at the back!”

Phillip Hughes indeed RIP, a real tragedy to be taken so young, I have seen him play on a good few occasions here in Perth. Australia as a nation is collectively in shock this evening.

  13. I actually hope Celtic have a real go at Salzburg tonight rather than sitting back hoping to hit on the break.Celtic dont have the players to do that and would no doubt lead to a silly goal being conceded. Will be interesting to see if Salzburg play their strongest line up having already qualified.

  14. McDowellcelt god bless wee oscar on

Time to set sail for paradise again. I can taste them pints a Stella on the boat already.

Hope we get a good crowd tonight to lift the players cos this Salzburg team will be hard to beat. HH

  15. Salzburg have already qualified, so hopefully that could take an edge off their play.

Think we can do it, but I also think we need Commons in the team.

    Remarkably returning to normal.

For a while it was total gridlock….all traffic lights at red, amber and green. Cross the road…..naw don’t cross the road……shop alarms going off all over town…………anyway…as it started coming over the river everyone stood up wae their cameras……and then as they realised it wasn’t just a cloudburst on the horizon but a wave and flotsam, jetsam and uncle sam possibly that was sweeping towards them, they all together turned and ran.

Queen street outside the Plaza was at least 8 inches deep in water.

And then behind the deluge the sun came out and wandering in its wake came guys wae wheelie bins and brushes.

Amazin…..Glasgow corpy could pick up a tip or two here. Absolutely brill.

Sean, a prayer said for Michael

RIP to both Arthur Montford and Phil Hughes. The former was part of the soundtrack to my life- his enthusiasm on the big nights belongs to a more civilised style of broadcasting. As for young Phil his death is so shocking – that kind of thing just is not supposed to happen in that sport nowadays

As for tonight well this is a real test for Ronny and his team. Salzburg has a decent team and whilst our results are improving our performances are not improving significantly yet. Time for a big night lads

I’m fearful about tonight’s game and I just hope Craig Gordon plays and is in spectacular form.

  24. Sean Thornton,

Mick sounds like the type of guy you’d be priviliged to know, never mind have as a brother.

Well tonight is a big game for Ronys Celtic it will be a marker to see if we have progressed.I think Saltzburg are a pretty good side and keeping a clean sheet will not be easy while who will be up front for us ? If we can sort out those two issues we have a chance but it will in my opinion be a nervy night for all Celtic fans. H.H.

  26. Sean T – thoughts and prayers with your bro.

Re tonight’s game, I am feeling tense already. I have little confidence that we will get a win, but a lot of faith that anything is possible at CP.

Thinking about nervy Euro nights, my favourite goal for today comes from a tense 1-0 win against Rosenborg. I’d take that result tonight:
