Bernabei window. Good luck to old foes in CL

411

It is perhaps just as well Greg Taylor has had such an impressive start to the season.   The alleged offence Alexandro Bernabei was arrested for yesterday will not enhance his chances of integrating into Scotland or the Celtic defence.

He is 21 years old, a long way from home and has a lot more money in his bank than ever before.  It is a heady cocktail.  Ange Postecoglou is experienced enough to know how to best deal with the player, how the season progresses is very much up to Alexandro.

After Hearts on Sunday, Celtic are away to Dundee United and Ross County, the latter in the League Cup.  Alexandro should be hoping to make his competitive debut during those two away games.  If he misses this window, he’s unlikely to make an appearance until after games against Newco and our first Champions League tie of the season.

Best of luck to old foes Bodo/Glimt and Copenhagen in Champions League qualifiers tonight.  Good to see honest teams that live within their means prosper.

  4. Camusbhoy, MadMitch,

I agree that it’s not ideal we don’t have temporary accommodation we can put new players in. I live in London now and not far from me is a block of luxury flats and Arsenal own a couple for their new signings while they find their feet and the club helps them secure longer term accommodation. Crazy that we don’t, not least given the grief our players could face if they end up in the wrong area.

MM also fully agree that a support network is crucial and those arriving with a significant other tend to fare better. A simple thing like not going back to an empty house makes a massive difference and having club accommodation can mean that you effectively co-locate youngsters in the same area so they can hang out playing Fifa, etc rather than being lonely or falling into bad habits with the first person who shows some friendship. Ideally you’d work out who your Mrs ML mother hen is and have the houses near there to maximise that.

  5. Not sure if this list is totally up to date, an army of staff for players to consult the depth of experience on the staff is excellent, players have their own agents and the players union to be there for them and assist them, some absolute gash being spouted

Sorry, not buying those 3 examples.French Eddy, having a laugh. He was surrounded by Frenchmen.Loads of pics of them all together. He went in a huff when the others went.

Duffy,!!!!,what far foreign shores was he dumped on?He could not see his kids because of Covid?WTF has that to do with Celtic? He had been playing in England !!!!

Barkas. All down to Covid,as he says.Like the rest of the population. No social mixing.Very difficult, but nothing to do with Celtic. All players the same.

If that’s the best you are coming up with,I will hold fire on the apology.

  7. Coneybhoy, Both Kerr’s Ma & Da came from Belfast.

I remember a few years back. Ireland were playing some Eastern European team, There was a Hun playing for them and the crowd were booing him when he got the ball anyhow he got injured and was carried off and a section of the crowd celebrated,

Afterwards Kerr apologized, might have been same interview but around that time was questioned about his allegiances and came out with some Guff about his Parents being from Belfast and said something like as a kid Rangers was always the first score he checked and added even though I love Celtic.

Personally I didn’t believe him, I reckon he is a Hun and have had no time for him since,

  8. The majority of the playing staff currently speak very highly of Ange Postecoglou, also past players, the fact 4 Japanese players followed him across the globe speaks volumes

Celtic have arrangements with several for leasing agreements directly with players themselves. Longterm arrangments, long standing partners.

All those guys have jobs to do and I doubt spend much time worrying about players outside of the club. Many of them (scouts, analysis guys, youth team coaches) will be lucky if they’ve ever even said hello to Kyogo, Jota. Interestingly, no player liaison manager among that lot, nor a loan manager like Harkin used to do at Man City (keeping in contact with the players we have on loan).

Turkeybhoy – I did say COVID was a factor in the Duffy and Barkas cases and yes we all had lockdown to contend with. At my work, we put on extra mental health provision, had zoom quizzes, etc – sounds like we had none of that but instead left the players to their own devices (so Griffiths could get away with putting his monitoring vest in a car to make it look like he was keeping fit). We either didn’t pick up that DUFFY and Barkas were lonely or did nothing about it – by the time they arrived the team could train at Lennoxtown so we could easily have put on extra sessions, meals etc there to help them.

On French Eddy, are we surprised that he might have made poor choices when in the hotel on his own? He was a daft 19 year old lad who, let’s remember, had form for making bad decisions and getting into grief when left to his own devices (the air rifle and Toulouse) so to not have a proper integration plan for him seems a bit naive.

Anyway, my point is that these are things we absolutely need to be on top of. Not doing it thoroughly to save 5 figure salaries seems daft when we pay millions for the players – to use Paul’s terminology it’s bad asset management!

I did preface my post by stating that my list wasn’t up to date, the players interact with all of the staff who work or visit Lennonxtown it would surprise you who players chat to, in my time I used to be able to walk into Barrowfield as a visitor and was able to chat to players, I see the main point of the list you have ignored clearly it didn’t fit your negative ill-informed narrative, numerous members of staff to consult, from the manager down, its ludicrous to suggest these players are isolated, ignored

Knowing Sevco’s ‘luck’ the UEFA observer will be from Northern Ireland where the Scottish songbook is not only acceptable but lauded.

  21. Lionsroar – We’re not going to agree on this so I’ll simply say I take the point there are plenty people to talk to and consult with, but those guys have their own jobs and lives to contend with and probably don’t have anything to do with players outside of work. Ange has publicly said he keeps his distance from players and he’s not seriously going to be dealing with queries like “what’s a really good sushi restaurant”, “where can I go to meet other Japanese/Israeli/etc people”, “where is my local place of worship” or “where can I get Kosher chicken” type queries is he? Nor are any of the other folk on the staff likely to be able to either. I mentioned before, it’s probably been easier for the Japanese players to settle as they have a Japanese translator who will know all these things and have show the players where to go, etc. Abada has already said Bitton was invaluable in helping him with that sort of stuff.

The Man City three were unhappy because they weren’t playing as much as they’d like and didn’t feel engaged with on that – very different scenarios.

The uninterested indifferent manner you have outlined that the staff have towards our international players is unsubstantiated guff, Celtic have an excellent record and are known for developing talent to sell on to top clubs, particularly in the EPL, we wouldn’t have that reputation if we treated players as coldly as you suggest, players wishing basic info on places of worship, restaurants, entertainment, the club will assist, coaches fellow players, HR, agents, etc or do as many of us do when we travel abroad, use Google you can change the language on the page to Japanese
