Bernardo bang on plan

254

Paulo Bernardo’s signature on a loan-to-buy-option concluded Celtic’s business last night. It follows the same scouting, recruitment and commercial path established with Jota two years earlier.

At 21, he is bang on plan. If Celtic are to make a significant leap forward, we will not do it with mid-20s honest pros. Talent needs to be on the cusp of maturity, with world-class development added.

It would be an interesting move to start Paulo tomorrow, but a place on the bench isn’t out of the equation.

Welcome to Celtic, Paulo.

I’m seldom confident ahead of Ibrox and tomorrow is no different. The game is perhaps a few weeks early for us.  Still, we have a manager and squad that know how to win there. Nothing to lose, Celtic.

Round up on the window next week.

Good afternoon all from the Victoria Bar. You are an absolute shower of malcontents. So there now. Gerrintaethum Celtic!!!+

  2. Radio Scotland going into overdrive about a goal that Clancy chopped off for Kilmarnock; saying McInnes will be feeling aggrieved,as they were denied a penalty against us last season. Weren’t we denied a penalty against them only a couple of weeks ago? No mention of that, of course. They get worse by the week.

  3. It’s the apologists readiness to accept and excuse failure I don’t get. I’ve read the cups aren’t important this year and even if we lose tomorrow we’ll still win the league, we have a much better squad. Really? You sure about that? Our squad players lost 3 nil at Ibrox last year. Both squads have since changed and our first 11 is weaker. Why the hurry to surrender trophies? Wouldn’t it make more sense asking why with record earnings and Sevco buying basically mostly dross, we are righting off trophies. That suggests to me massive mistakes within our club. Isn’t that the sensible place to put your attention? The board apologists, never change their stance regardless of Celtic’s business, that highlights they either don’t care if Celtic are successful or are not worth listening too because if you don’t change your view when the facts change then your opinion is moot.

The facts are the manager wanted other positions strengthened, particularly left back and it wasn’t done whilst turning a profit.

Failure to win title will equal massive failure by our board and must pay the consequences with their jobs.

    ———

Must have missed that on my sunbed in Lanzarote, so the manager has stated something about a left back and it’s not just the usual made up pish facts …

  5. never felt less confident going into this game. We are asking a lot from a team who has not been playing well to gel with 3-4 players who have not played together , let alone experienced this fixture.

Rangers despite their recent euro performance have had time as a team and appear focused on the league as a priority.

Would have liked some experience brought in (as Rodgers had asked for and could feel let down).

Having said that I’m intrigued by how Palma, Yang, Holm and Phillips will play tomorrow and through development.

  6. Good early evening from a still qarm and sunny Garngad

Not long back from the Celtic story a nice wee afternoon, with son, son in law and grandson.

Of course wee Riley collected 42 cups and he got a quid return on each one on 5 different bank cards. He says that will do him for his trip to Madrid in November to see the famous.

Now lets get into this mob manana

    Is there complaints??

Are you doubting the manager wanted a left back, really?

Do you feel this a position not drastically needing strengthened?

You’re not paying attention if you think Brendan is happy with that position.

Bernabei is an undisciplined defensive bombscare and Taylor is a weak link , although I love his attitude.

Will get back to you sometime between September and December to remind you how much of a mistake not strengthening that position was.

£20M down the tubes in transfer fees. Add in wages its circa £50M wasted by Lawwell’s self appointed transfer guru with no track record.

Both Lawwell’s need to be removed after tomorrows defeat.

    I smell Ibrox shoite.

  10. Show no fear tomorrow Celts …all we ask is that you give 100 % for each other and the game will take care of itself …remain focused …block out the bigoted noise and remember who are the champions ..and who will be playing in the champions league this season !🤔

  15. now to tomorrow.

and our recent experiences of the glasgow derby minus fans.

they killed the fixture, they couldnt take celtic fans celebrating in the broomloan, and now they go to these games expecting to win, that may well be the case, but imho, it will have no bearing on the outcome of the league.

the homes games will most probably have a 6-6 points spilt and cancel out.

the expectation levels on their blogs are huge, but they are worse than on here, beale must win, or walk is a theme.

as always i do fear for our players and staffs safety, does anyone know if the “board” take up seats in their directors box ?

Jeezo Stivs. You’ll need to be more careful with your driving.

  18. This is a very odd state of affairs

The aul cognitive dissonance in full flow, I must say

“If Celtic are to make a significant leap forward…

Let’s remind ourselves where we were two years ago

Ange was building the team up from a carcrash, Ange then may a significant leap forward from that wreckage and won five out of six trophies

He did that with a real mix of professional players

He gave the team UCL experience even if it was a season too soon for most players and gave us a great platform to build on.

We are now suggesting that we play a youngster just in the door, who may well not even have visited Scotland in a crucial Glasgow Derby.

That means the Ange leap forward took a great leap back, a leap back we always make with this plan, this model

Out of Ange’s team that made the great leap forward, we have lost

Juranovic, Giakoumakis, Jenz, Starfelt, Jota, Mooy

Crucial players, lots of experience, good physicality and replaced them with moneyball signings and loanees

Don’t be fooled (again), just think logically, the folk are pulling the wool over your eyes

When Ange made the leap forward he didn’t go for inexperienced players around 21 years old

There was a real mix, that is the tried and tested way to build a team; youth, experience, guile, physicality, teamwork, individual brilliance

Ange’s team didn’t have it all but it had enough, it was still a work in progress but it had made good progress

So think, why are we not building on that platform, replacing quality with quality, experience with experience and pushing forward?

Why every couple of season we end up back at the beginning?

It is because our Board is not a Football Club Board, it is a PLC Board

The PLC is there to make a profit…

    Read this again…

“At 21, he is bang on plan. If Celtic are to make a significant leap forward, we will not do it with mid-20s honest pros. Talent needs to be on the cusp of maturity, with world-class development added.

Is that true? Will our plethora of new young recruits make the difference tomorrow or will Nat Philips?

My feeling is we can depend on Nat.

If any of those youngsters benefit from our world class development, like Jota they will be off in the wink of an eye

It helps that player, it helps the agents, it helps our Board get richer

Loosing the likes of Jota does not benefit the team one iota, so drop the scales from your eyes and get real – moneyball is a get rich quick scheme, not a plan to make a football team leap forward.

Get smart – follow the money.

    Hail Hail

  19. My local pub in haddington has a new tap, Victoria Malaga, it’s decent, having not been abroad for over ten years this is the closest I’ll get by ordering a pint of it

  20. Great Pics AT, spent nearly every weekend at Arrochar when I was 18/19.

Have a memory that one of the local hotels was owned by an ex-Celt, can’t remember who maybe someone with better memory from 40 years back will know who it was

  21. Who really cares about boardroom guff or players we didn’t sign should have could have …

The Huns have beaten Morton & Ross County, don’t buy not the “hype” especially from some “Celtic” fans on here …

Got a feeling Brendan has been dropping wee Kyogo deep in our opening games to get Goldson & Soutar to defend high up the park … 100% confident about tomorrow … why worry ?

Greg Taylor man of the match … we missed Greg last season when he went off injured at the Hun hell hole

“If” the Huns & officials manage a decent result tomorrow we will be 2pts behind after 4 games having been to pittodrie & Ibrox …

Only a fool would predict the score …

    Huns 0 Celtic hunners

  22. Nothing better than a 350 mile trip home on a Saturday night after a drubbing. No consideration given to fans by TV companies.

  23. This morning one of the BBC sports journalist was commenting on the £2.6bn spent by premier League clubs. He pointed out that what we’re seeing now are players you haven’t heard of going for £30 / £ 40m.

  24. Looking forward to the game tomorrow, we really have to see a huge turnaround

Our biggest challenge, as I see it, is our 4-3-3

We were overrun at Ibrox last season with that format, with very similar personel

Good we have better options in defence but it was midfield we lost it

We haven’t tried any other format in anger though and we may struggle due to injuries to have all the options

I’d love to see the return of BR’s

    4-2-3-1

That would mean Oh or Meada up front though

The two in front of a new back four is crucial and like some have said Scales or Lagerbielke at left back could add the physicality we need

    Hart

    Alistair, Philips, Lagerbielke, Scales

    ………..Turnbull, Calmac

    …..Abada, Kyogo, O’Riley

    ……………..Meada

Only unorthodox because we haven’t had time to bed the players in, Yes we could do with more physicality in the middle of the park but we simply don’t have it

Whatever happens, I’m sure there are some surprises in store
