Bernardo bang on plan

254

Paulo Bernardo’s signature on a loan-to-buy-option concluded Celtic’s business last night. It follows the same scouting, recruitment and commercial path established with Jota two years earlier.

At 21, he is bang on plan. If Celtic are to make a significant leap forward, we will not do it with mid-20s honest pros. Talent needs to be on the cusp of maturity, with world-class development added.

It would be an interesting move to start Paulo tomorrow, but a place on the bench isn’t out of the equation.

Welcome to Celtic, Paulo.

I’m seldom confident ahead of Ibrox and tomorrow is no different. The game is perhaps a few weeks early for us.  Still, we have a manager and squad that know how to win there. Nothing to lose, Celtic.

Round up on the window next week.

  1. Like the back four, but no grit in the midfield.

    We’ll see!

    C’MON THE CELTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  2. Iwata not even on the bench? He is fit, right? Holm or Kwon the only midfield options and neither of them remotely experienced for this game.

Thought Phillips might have gone straight into the squad.

Otherwise more or less same as last week.

Can’t say for certain but Brendan doesn’t often chuck a newbie straight in at the expense of existing squad or team members?

  4. Strange team selection. Looks like midfield is light weight and may well be out numbered

and could be overwhelmed. BR well up against it today.

  5. Sorry for my negativity, logging off now. Hope the day goes better than I expect and those of you that watch it have reasons to smile.

  6. Phillips is clearly not fit to play, no Nernado either on the bench. I’m afraid our additions have come too late in the day for Ibrox.

So Scales is our only option unless you go with Kobayashi and we seen that movie last May.

We’re in dire straits today. I just don’t see that team getting anything.

I’m trying to console myself with the hope that it’s the last time this season we’ll see some of these lads in a Celtic starting 11.

I’m fully expecting a sore one today.

  7. Frankly if that team with that bench get anything out of this game it will be a minor miracle.

All the things that concerned me are on display with that selection and very little on the bench that is match fit or game changing.

I forsee a bad day at the office again.

    Sorry.

Hope I am wrong but I don’t think I am.

Has to be the most underwhelming team selection in a long time.

    Where is Phillips?

    Where is Iwata?

    Where is Bernardo?

    How is Turnbull starting?

As for the recent record stat.

Didn’t hear it as I don’t consume any radio output from BBC Sport Scotland.

But the last three matches against Sevco at Ibrox going back just 17 months – have finished one draw and one victory apiece.

Shortbread will find and publicise ANY statistic that makes Sevco look good.

One stat I’d love them to reveal.

What percentage of their listeners are Celtic fans.

    🤔🤔🤔🤔

  10. They should not be out numbered in midfield, there is 3 v 3 in there, dig and fight is another thing, as is how we set up, definitely a lack recovery pace though.

Thanks. We didn’t win in the league or Scottish cup in the 60s I don’t think but did in league cup.

I wasn’t aware of the 50s cup replay. He never mentioned that to me and is no longer with us. It maybe it was a night game which he could rarely go to due to work.

The certain facts are from the 30s to early 70s we didn’t win a league game there. 40 brutal years. The contest to my fortunate time as a fan could be more star

    Thanks again for clarifying.

    __

The 3-2 win at Ibrox prior to the 7-1 game was a league game. We actually scored 14 goals in total against them in 1957. Both Scottish Cup games were afternoon kick-offs: 4-4 at home (Saturday) before the 2-0 win at Ibrox (Wednesday) . (No floodlights at CP until 1956)

Correction from my previous post: I thought (wrongly) that the 2-0 win at Ibrox was a League game, but it was actually the League Cup (thanks Mr Google). Sorry.

That team selection is proof positive of the malaise of the board in getting players in to the club sufficiently early for important games

  13. BR doesn’t rate Iwata. That’s very clear. That being the case, I’m not sure why he wasn’t at least loaned out.

  14. Oh dear god ,what I prayed for not to happen looks like it has . A midfield that couldn’t tackle a fish supper . Players who should have been playing are not . Obviously our near the wire transfers are not ready . I fear a battering

  15. I called the team right- except for Scales and Turnbull. Being aware that Phillips is injured- makes the Scales selection understandable. Brendan obviously likes David T as a potential goalscorer.

We will face a 15 minute onslaught today and we need to survive that. Maeda will harry them at the back- they have a rookie LB- and Abada scores regularly against them.

I have 1:1 in my predictor because Ibrox is always hard but……. if we win this, it will be against the odds, and will have a bad effect on their support and morale. Of course, if we lose we will face that backlash, but I think we can overcome it better than them, with our backline still to return.

I am placing my faith in the old Gambler’s Fallacy that we cannot be as bad as our last two outings. I am predicting a good performance from Maeda and Taylor

It’s a match day- so I will leave our debate aside with just one comment. The side we are facing today had pursued a policy of recruiting more experienced players than we did. Yet it hasn’t and didn’t work for them. I realise that, for the short term thinker, my words are hostages to fortune if we lose today but so be it.

I may not be big enough but I’m ugly enough to take it.
