Bernardo bang on plan

254

Paulo Bernardo’s signature on a loan-to-buy-option concluded Celtic’s business last night. It follows the same scouting, recruitment and commercial path established with Jota two years earlier.

At 21, he is bang on plan. If Celtic are to make a significant leap forward, we will not do it with mid-20s honest pros. Talent needs to be on the cusp of maturity, with world-class development added.

It would be an interesting move to start Paulo tomorrow, but a place on the bench isn’t out of the equation.

Welcome to Celtic, Paulo.

I’m seldom confident ahead of Ibrox and tomorrow is no different. The game is perhaps a few weeks early for us.  Still, we have a manager and squad that know how to win there. Nothing to lose, Celtic.

Round up on the window next week.

  1. Forgot to say, Willie Wallace and Joe McBride were mid twenties pros when Jock signed them

Seemed to work for us then

    Hail Hail

  2. Can’t really see what the Hun have to be confident about tomorrow. Pressure is all on them. It’s their home game, no away fans everything in their favour.

First goal will be crucial. Mistakes might be terminal.

    Keep it simple bhoys.

Evan Williams had a pub in Jamestown, Alexandria. 1973.

*actually it was Bonhill which is just doon the road fae Jimson, it was called the “Goalie Host” although all the locals referred it tae its original name the Eagle aka Evil Inn.

  4. GENE @ 9:15 PM,

True, in the past we haven’t done enough of that, especially with our own

But who ever said you don’t win anything with mid-twenties honest pros?

    Hail Hail

  5. What I like about our new arrivals, eg Luis and Nat is that they appear to be happy to sign for Celtic and to really want to be here. That seems to apply to others too. We are not talking Johannson or Guidetti here. And you cannot measure that.

Whichever of Ange’s windows you choose he brought mostly young player. Jenz was 23- bang on the plan. You can’t put some 23 year olds bought now in the projects- undercooked category and choose to put Jenz as oven ready and aged to mid-twenties cos it suits the thesis. All age data has to be treated the same. Though I think I’m ok with allowing the university-bred players of Japan and USA as being less experienced pros. So Jenz being sent back was Ange’s decision- we saved little money as he was a loanee with an option to buy. As it was his parent club will make that money profit now- not Celtic- if I have followed the money correctly

Of course most would prefer Giakoumakkis over Oh; he was our second choice Korean forward target after all. But Giorgios was sold and that was Ange’s choice- neither of us know the reason for it but, purely on pitch performance, it looks like a mistake. But we know there are other social reasons why players get sold so I trust Ange’s judgement even though I can’t see why Giakoumakkis and Jenz were sold.

I may be wrong but the Jura: Johnston switch was one of the few occasions where we had the replacement in store already and that was mostly due to WC delaying transfer out of Jura. In any case we already had Ralston and, as he was injured, without buy-in AJ, we could have played Jura at Ibrox that day he made his debut.

If we lose Kyogo tomorrow, we still have options other than a recently injured Oh. Daizen is valued at CF over Kyogo by the National team manager. Paul 67 is advocating Abada as a natural scorer. so we needn’t be as worried about forward cover. It is at the back that I have worries. I hope Lagerbielke and, perhaps, Phillips, will calm those for me.

I was half-kidding about the Lisbon Lions comparison. It was a different era. Some things remain the same but a lot has changed. We do not have a generation of world class Scots players as we did for 10 years back then.

  7. Why we’ll pump the Sevco manana….

Joe Hart….still the best shot stopper in Scotland.

One big difference between last year and this is that Brendan will allow him to blooter it long if there isn’t a pass on….the big paw save against StJ last weekend could be a season defining moment for us.

Alistair Johnston….best RB imo since Danny McGrain…hard as nails.

CBs….young guy with an older head beside him with a point to prove.

Greig Taylor..won’t bottle it and will get tore in.

CalMac….I think he’s been too concerned as captain with what’s happening behind him….with AJ back and an experienced CH he’ll be back to his best.

MOR….knows he has to perform on SKY to get the big bucks move he craves and he will.

Maeda….if there is one game you’d defo play him in, it would be this…they are terrified of his pressing.

Kyogo…a phenomenon who will be even better this season than the last 2.

    Huns 1 Celtic 4.

  8. Nobody is averse to signing mid 20’s pros. A majority of our team that were 23 or under have grown and aged to be in the 23-25 age range. They are not all shallow youth and unready. I will be looking to see what their skill level and performance is before I get around to asking them their age.

  9. Laxalt 9.41pm

Am with you with Joe Hart, an excellent goalkeeper, who has obviously made some errors with the ball at his feet … (that’s why he is a goalie) … although am thinking the Morton/Ross County slayers won’t score tomorrow … unless wee Don Robbo has a few bob on Tav Pen to score anytime

  10. SFtBs @ 9:39 PM,

we saved little money as he [Jenz] was a loanee with an option to buy. As it was his parent club will make that money profit now- not Celtic

Well that makes no sense at all, does it?

Unless you think Lorient FC were going to give Mercedes to us free…

They were not, he would have been a 24 year old, 8 mn signing, not on plan, no great profit there

Giakoumakis wanted a higher salary, he said he had been promised it

It would have cost us more money and he was not on plan, seeing the pattern yet?

I’d be very tempted to play Meada through the middle tomorrow, he’ll give that Sevco defence a torrid time.

    Hail Hail

  11. Chairbhoy

Jenz was with us 6 months. He went back still 3 months short of his 24th birthday and 6 months later Wolfsburg bought him for more than he had been offered to us. If it was just a money making policy, we would have signed him and sold him on. sometimes football guys make mistakes too.

I wasn’t aware that Giakoumakkis was sold because he wanted more money. I’ll take that with a pinch of something. On his form trajectory he would have got a rise, for sure, just as Kyogo, Abada, Matt, CCV and Jota got, and Hatate was offered, to make their future transfer more valuable to us.fans. But Ange seemed quite chilled to see Giakoumakkis go for a small-ish profit.

If I follow the money again- I see Lorient and Atlanta making the money and us making a poor-ish trade. You see it as somehow – somebody at Celtic pocketed the money .

  12. Robertson’s Refereeing. On the plus side there can’t be any Orange Walk’s scheduled for tomorrow.

“we have a manager and squad that know how to win there.”

    Are you sure Paul?

    BBC:

“Rangers have only lost one of their last seven home games against rivals Celtic in all competitions (W5 D1),”

    ___________________________________

Why does BBC Shortbread think that publishing statistics from 11 years ago is in any way relevant to tomorrow’s match?

Why not refer to Sevco’s record in the last 7 home games against the Hoops? ( if they must!).

Because they made it clear back in 2013 that Sevco are not Rangers(1872-2012).

They said: “A football club, once incorporated, is indistinguishable in Scots law from its corporate identity.

“If the club was separate it would need its own constitution, committee members, trustees, etc.

“Rangers Football Club does not have that because it is incorporated.”

  14. Chairbhoy

Ange felt the Japanese centre back we signed was ample cover for Jenz.

Jenz played in several CL games and showed he was not up to it at that level.

I’m glad to see the passing of the transfer window.

From the season’s early days, I have a question in my mind which one of the Celtic internet human tele-printers, who watch 50+ professional football games every week, may be able to answer.

I saw a clip of the Kilmarnock winning goal v Sevco and the pictures looked odd to me. Is stripes v stripes a common thing in the modern world of football?

I don’t remember the Celtic hoops playing a team in hoops for decades till now.

  16. paulsthroughball88 on

Though not Brighton v Geordies today. Just too similar, but away strip appearances a factor too.

Milan v Inter is a good possibility. Thanks, I’ll look for some old photos (when football was still fitba’).

  19. On the eve of every game at Ibrox I remember how lucky we are to be Celtic supporters in the current era. I remember my dad.

I recognise that some entitled customers and consumers, of the modern era, who expect that we win every game don’t appreciate this but if you know the history then you will know that for 50 years, or so, we rarely came away from Ibrox with a point and never won.

My old man never saw us win at Ibrox. That is despite going there every season from the 1930s until the 70s. We simply didn’t win a league or Scottish cup game there in that entire period. The 2-2 Jinky game in 67 was as good as it got.

Since then we had a brief period of joy in the late 70s and early 80s but these were sporadic. Kenny’s game and the Joe Craig one spring to mind. Sneddon’s 2-2 game when TB was sent off felt like a win and of course Charlie’s last game 4-2 then the 4-4 en route to an unlikely league win in 86. The 2-2 boxing match in autumn 87 and then the 2-1 Andy Walker game the following spring. There was the 2-0 Duncan Ferguson falling over game and of course Brian ONeil with wee Fergus in the Broomloan stand. We had plenty of close run games and dodgy decisions. KoK headed equalizer in the 2-2 game. MON began intoxicated hunskelping for real. Although his first visit was a 5-1 defeat following on from the famous 6-2 at CP. Hartsons 1-0 and Thomo and Henrik again saw us to wins there in quick succession and suddenly it became more commonplace for us. Beach all Sunday and all that. Lubos game, WGS at new year almost secured a league which we blew. Even then our win record was less than 33% from 2001-2012.

Since the new club began playing there it is better of course. Only in these recent times has it ever felt easy though. I feel so privileged. I have been at every win there since Joe Craig. I have watched us win from every stand and even the directors box in that place. The experience is the best and really special wherever you watch it from.

By the same token we have never won there since 1977 when I was not attending. With no Celtic support tomorrow I really hope to break that duck.

I am looking forward to doing that in the company of some good Celtic fans, most of whom won’t remember the old history. History of when we never won there. Tom McLaughlin might be an exception in his gathering at Kittys. Let’s hope Brendan gives us a special day. It’s never been harder than with no backing. Time for our team to galvanize.

Any learned CQN’ers watched TRIANGLE OF SADNESS -it’s a bit out of my comfort zone but I’m enjoying it. However, there’s serious satire ship I don’t quite get. If you lovehate your oligarchs, this the filum for you.

JACKIEMAC: I really appreciated this flick. Especially as it shows that abuse and selfishness lies dormant within almost every human and, given the chance, it emerges as part of a power/privilege motive. Spoiler alert, I thought the vom-scenes were overdone but the depiction of the shallow characters was quite sharp and brilliant.

  21. Ange was a ruthless dude

Jenz was terrible in the CL particularly away to Madrid and GG missed numerous chances against all our opponents…. if you can’t do it you get shipped out , simple as that.

Only a fool would forecast tomorrow’s result, on the basis never lost a domestic fixture whilst in Lanzarote, 3-0 tic
