Best of luck Brendan and thanks for the trebles

914

If I’m being magnanimous, Brendan made no secret of the fact that he wanted to return to the English Premier League.  When he was here, he won everything available to him domestically and proved that you can please all of the people all of the time.  We want managers to be ambitious, honest and successful and that’s what we got.

It rankles that his timing was so poor, a day before we visit Tynecastle on league duty and five days before we visit Easter Road in the Cup.  Brendan saw little compensation in Moussa Dembele’s success here, or ambition, when he engineered his exit at a bad time for the manager, the same is true now.  Celtic knew nothing of this before yesterday and have a major job on their hands to ensure the quest for the treble treble remains on course.

Neil Lennon is likely to be announced as interim manager.  We are fortunate to have as an experienced hand available.  If anyone knows how to take a Celtic team to Edinburgh, it’s Neil.  Plans for next season will continue in the background, but Neil will be asked to deliver the treble and nothing will be allowed to distract him or the players from that objective.

I have heard from a few CQN’ers who are surprised today, but we should know better.  This is football, managers and players are highly paid professionals, all the badge thumping in the world does not change that.  Exceptions are rare.

Best of luck to you, Brendan, and thanks for the trebles.  You could have held out for better than Leicester, but there’s every chance you’ll keep them in the division for many years.

    IrishTwoTone,

The contract would have allowed for both the manager and club to walk away without compensation with a seasons notice. I doubt the Plc would have had it any other way since MON.

  2. If it is John Kennedy for the next 2 games, I wish him all the best.

An absolutely horrendous turn of events to get us here, however.

We need to plan the next 5 years and spend wisely to make it happen.

We have had a few projects on the park recently. None in the dugout please.

    Huge decisions coming up.

  3. Not posted for years but check in on the site almost daily.

To say I’m disappointed with BR is an understatement.

What I would say is I we don’t go on to win the League then BR would be best to avoid this neck of the woods for a considerable while.

    Despicable behaviour from him.

All his bull about the live of the club etc etc is now complete drivel.

No person with the club at heart would do what he’s done.

    Unforgivable.

Bye Brendan – don’t rush back for the Paradise Windfall.

    Hail Hail.

I think BR was genuine in his affection for Celtic although the manner in which he has left certainly leaves a bad taste in the mount.

That being said, our executives have screwed up royally by not supporting such a great manager in Brendan. The relationship must have been sufficiently bad to leave in March when so much is to play for in Scotland and so little to play for in England.

I am worried moving forward as BR did so much for our international reputation, including our ability to attract young players and, particularly for our home grown players, his ability to develop them. That has not been replicated by any recent Celtic manager.

We need a box office summer appointment. Let’s see what we get.

“I woke up here on a Monday morning as the manager of Celtic, and I’m in the best job in the world. Believe it or not the sky is blue here in Glasgow, I absolutely love it here.

“I’m so happy here at Celtic. I’m in a job I love, it’s a huge club with big expectancy and big pressure.

“There’s no doubt, I would love to work in the Premier League again one day, but I’m hopefully going to be coaching for another 20-odd years so it’s no time soon.

    Brendan Rodgers 2018

    ===================================================

The above quote you posted is exactly why I feel let down,or used perhaps,we were all taken for mugs.

When you consider more fans turned out here to greet him than normally appear at home games at Leicester, then clearly his desire to rectify his Liverpool failure exceeds the bounds of common decency.

A man who is experienced and wealthy, rolls over to a tinpot clubs threat ” come now or it will be gone ”

thats the tactics they use in DFS when buying a suite,to surrender your personal reputation and integrity for a position at Leicester beggars belief.

Of course he will have regrets very soon, as the Chelsea job will be coming up,and as a previous employee could understand the attraction, however now its too late.

They probably don’t realise it, but they will be as we are now in a couple of years, as this mendacious man moves on,if successful.

I think I am more hurt than anything else,as I misjudged the man.

  6. I thought Rodgers was more ambitious than being Leicester City manager. It his decision and he is entitled to make it. I am not going to make assumptions why he chose to desert us now, but I am really surprised. I think he had made up his mind to go at the end of the season anyway. The LC job came along unexpectedly. As for Lenny getting the job, I cannot think of a better choice and this time

  7. If you look up Leicester City, you will see that they are in the top 25 richest clubs in the world. Last year, on the back of Champions League money they got to 14th. They are the 8th richest club in England, which gives them a decent chance of making the Europa League regularly, and perhaps even making a reasonable job of it (given the money they have). It’s not ‘BR leaving us for little Leicester’, I’m afraid.

BR was never going to get Chelsea, Arsenal, etc, so he had to go to someone in the next circle, and Leicester tick a lot of boxes. Leicester is a stepping stone for BR – like all clubs are for all ambitious managers (if Leicester, or any EPL club, had come for Stevie G then he would have done the same: And he will). It gets BR into the EPL, and into the news.

This is where we are, this is reality. We’ve got upward of 50k fans at most games, but we can be outspent by Bournmouth, who take in 4% of their revenue at the turnstiles. Most of Europe is suffering from the EPL (there was a good article in Der Spiegel’s English edition on this last week), it’s just that we are sharing a bed with the elephant in the room.

  8. A big rebuild has now become a massive rebuild.

I can’t believe Brendan has jeopardised our 8IAR for a meaningless couple of months at Leicester.

His lack of character and I would also say honesty should not mean the board get overlooked in their dealings. An absolute clusterfuck. 40 odd million in the bank will mean nothing if Gerrard raises the league flag.

  9. Smug Sevco fans should be aware that if Slippy G is a big success, he too will be on his way down south before they know it. In his case, I could understand it as he’s a rookie trying to make his way. Brendan, not so much.

Anyway, let’s get behind the new man whoever he is.

    COYBIG

  10. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

I’m annoyed with Brendan for the manner things have transpired.

Having said that, anyone mentioning “ambition” needs to look at our own board and the funds made available to BR.

If he was being backed to the hilt by Celtic, we could complain about his lack of ambition, but as he wasn’t (far from it), I can’t complain if he decides that he is being hamstrung by those running the club.

Still. Doesn’t make this departure any easier.

  11. APRICALE sorry but to get to the Europa league they have to get through Man City, Man Utd, Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham and hope that seventh is good enough. He may pull that off once every three seasons but the other issue is that once they get there teams their size instantly prioritise Premier League survival over Thursday games against Astra Giurgiu, Hapoel Be’er Sheva etc. Look at the apathy of the Burnley, Southampton, Everton and West Ham teams over the past few seasons.

  12. Apricale,

Leicester won’t be in the top 25 richest for long. Their league win was an aberration, the prize money so huge as to be obscene, likewise their Champions League participation – an aberration, an anomaly, call it what you will.

Ach whatever. I’m just hacked off the day.

  13. THE HANDS CANT HIT @ 4.40

Their affection for Celtic whoever they are is not the same as the supporter in the stand, or on the internet.

It can’t be, and his successor will face the same task as he did which is ultimately not just to compete but beat better

sides with ten times the budget and who play in rich leagues instead of bent, and skint Scotland.

Lesser names than BR have tried and failed his standing has made his decision all the more hard to accept and its understable fans are shocked and upset.

NFL IMHO is a must because we can’t surely face two crucial games with a manager in the dug out.

The summer will have to wait.

  14. My real disappointment today is the manner of Brendan’s departure. It was clearly going to happen at some point but leaving a club that he claimed was special and cared so deeply for and doing it in the manner and speed must be a wake up call to all those who wanted to believe that this was a deeply honorouble man.

Delighted that he came to our club and helped with so many honours but there has always been this sneaking feeling that the front had more substance than the reality.

I also suspect that the real issue of the internal Summer disputes has still to be told.

Brendan was always out for Brendan and he played the supporters and their ( our ) loyalty to a tee.

He has gone. The club is bigger than any one individual however a nasty taste in the mouth this afternoon.

  15. Thankyou Brendan for delivering ‘Jelly and ice cream’ day of dreams at our expense over to ibrox.

They will be super motivated and boosted by your actions today.

Better than a £10 million signing.

Thank the lord that Neil Lennon is immediately available to try and steer this potential self inflicted disaster from the nearest iceberg.

No doubt he is the right man to come in at once and finish the season off.

However long term things are about to get a lot more depressing as the dream died today.

Act of treason by Brendan Rodgers no matter what the behind the scenes circumstances.

  16. Things may not have been good, but if things were “so bad” between BR and the board he would have quit. He has left to go to what he considers a bigger club. That is all there is to say really! I’m so disappointed in that.

  17. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    BOURNESOUPRECIPE on 26TH FEBRUARY 2019 4:58 PM

Ohh i know, 8 is up for grabs and the next to games will be pivotal.

It’s a mess and representative of certain aspects of our management. We now need a new manager for summer as well as replacing 3 out of the back 4.

I’m disappointed in Rodgers, but we will see how well run we are now.

  18. The hands cant hit what the eyes cant see on

    @ LAZYDYNAMITE on 26TH FEBRUARY 2019 4:59 PM

I hope some anger is also reserved for PL and the board and the manner in which the transfer windows have transpired. To piss off our best asset to such a degree takes some doing.

Sevco can’t stop 10 in a row, only Celtic can.

  19. I’m very surprised BR left on short notice – maybe there were other factors.

Still, the club is in a good place, with good players, a strong team spirit and infrastructure, good youth coming through, etc…

After the European results though (and I don’t believe throwing the cheque book at defenders would have got the results required), BR’s Euro record (even at Liverpool) was poor mainly down to his tactics.

So, I hope the next manager carries on the good work of BR, RD, NL and WGS and shows some tactical maturity when playing in Europe.

  20. The way we have been motoring since the turn of the year it seemed only an incredible turn of events could stop us winning the championship………then today happened.

Self inflicted, motivated by money, greed and betrayal.

    Unforgivable .

  21. EXCATH @ 4:40 PM

    Agree with all of that.

Brendan Rodgers will never recover all of the esteem in which he was held regardless of any ‘blame game’.

He told Celtic Football club he was leaving, the rest is now history.

    Neil Francis Lennon CSC

  22. There’s enough in the tank to win the league, and probably the treble.

Beyond that the next transfer window will be critical, more for who leaves as who joins.

  23. THE HANDS CANT HIT WHAT THE EYES CANT SEE on 26TH FEBRUARY 2019 5:07 PM

Say what you like about the failings of PL and others.

At least they have not jumped ship and left us in the lurch with the pivotal weeks of the league season ahead.

Seems incredible to me that our esteemed manager cared so little for our current plight and his legacy.

I have not felt this empty and betrayed since the Ibrox boardroom press conference in 1989.

  24. Good evening bhoys

Wow…. We move on, Get NFL in as interim manager and steady the ship.

I believe we have a good enough squad to get 8in the bag and a Scottish cup, so treble treble.

But the CL qualifiers is a different story.

    HH

    D. :)

  25. Just wondering if Mr Rodgers was sounded out before Puel got the Danny mac, on reflection this move happened helluva fast.

  26. Neil Francis Lennon may not be as high a calibre a manager as Brendan Rodgers, but one thing we know for sure he is a genuine Celtic man and would never leave us in the lurch like his predecessor.

  27. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    RockTree….,

many on here, mostly the same ones bleating about BR, blamed NFL of exactly the same sin as BR is accused of the last time he left.
